Everyone seems to be putting in their 2 cents, so here is mine. After a few days of listening to nothing but 3121, this is my judgement of each track.

3121 - I like it, and I am really digging the Camille vocals.
My rating - 3/5

Lolita - I love it, very catchy. I will be surprised if this isn't released on single. Love the cheesy 80s synth.
My rating - 4/5

Te Amo Corazon - This is one of the best songs on the album, and I love it since the first time I heard it back in December, 05.
My rating - 5/5

Black Sweat - I actually don't like it despite the positive response it has recieved. The falsetto vocals are cool, I will give it that.
My rating - 2.5/5

Incense and Candlers - Nup. Don't love it. I hope it will grow on me but at the moment I'm not digging it.
My rating - 2/5

Love - I love it. One of the best songs on the album, shits all over anything on Musicology. This should definately be a single.
My rating - 5/5

Satisified - Simply put, I don't like it.
My rating - 1/5

Fury - I also love this track. At first I didn't like (mainly because I was comparing it to the live version). But it has grown on me to a stage where I could listen to it on repeat for hours. This should definately be a single.
My rating - 5/5

The Word - I don't like it that much. But there are some things good about it
My rating - 2.5/5

BLB - It's a good song, but why is on a Prince album? It should only be on Tamar's album IMO.
My rating - 3/5

The Dance - I dig it. It has potential on the charts IMO.
My rating - 5/5

Get on the Boat - It's allright, but I have never really dug the whole "old school soldiers" stuff.
My rating - 3/5

Whatever you need to tell yourself to make it a good record.

It's more like a Cliffnotes version of Musicology or Rave to me. I don't hear anything in terms of muscianship on this record that was dominant on TRC. As preachy as that album was, the musicianship and passion were undeniable. All of course, imho.

Based on what little I've written, I don't know how you could conclude much of anything other than that I think this album is better than “New Power Soul”.

And I wasn’t comparing the musical themes of “TRC” to this record but the lyrical ones. It’s an easier digestible, less fundamental way of saying much of the same things that were being said on “TRC”.

The ironic thing is that my opinion of this album the last 3 days was probably a lot harsher than yours.

It sounded like you were making a stretch as to why Prince sounds like a Britney Spears wannabe in Incense and Candles with the supposed plot you devised within the song. Sorry if I got that wrong.

But yes, I agree about the religious themes, as I said in my own little review, if anyone thought Prince was straying from believing himself one of God's chosen Witnesses, the lyrics to BLB and The Word should put that thought to rest, though he's not barking throughout the rest of the record as loudly as he did on TRC.

Sorry again for misinterpreting what you were saying.
No hard feelings.

I'm sorry but Prince fans really annoy me sometimes. They moan about 3121 being to commercial...when prince released 'The Rainbow Children' everyone moaned because it was to weird.

Then the fans complain about 3121 not sounding modern enough, then other times they moan because Prince is not producing music that sounds like the old stuff.

I really don't think he will ever produce anything as good as past stuff, but if you want that old stuff, listen to it. I am always happy with new Prince stuff if it is as enjoyable as 3121, even if it's not up to his best!!

Personally I enjoy it when he, like any artist, presses forward and continues to challenge himself, expectations be damned. I don't personally hear much of that on 3121. I'll take the weirdness of TRC (which I never complained about) over the pop complacency of 3121 (which sounds made for modern MTV) anyday.
No hard feelings.

I also enjoy when he pushes himself, unfortunately i think he has done everything he can. He has, in the past done so many different styles and production tricks that he cannot find anything new. I personally feel this is the same with Stevie Wonder. I feel that we should be proud for what he has done in the past and embrace any album where he at least tries, even if it doesn't quite meet up to our expectations

Good points and I agree, he has done just about everything possible but that doesn't mean he should be complacement which is what I sense on 3121. I also don't hear the great musical interludes or outbursts that are often the hallmark of his records. But no doubt, it's a pleasure just to get new music from a man of Prince's genius and you never know what he's gonna do next, even if it is chasing Britney Spears coattails.
No hard feelings.

I really don't think he is being complacent. From what i see, he is very proud of what he has done on 3121. I think he has really tried to please everyone on this latest album. If he was complacent he would have release NPS 2

I'm sooooo blasting 'Love' right now! Love it!

If it wasn't for that awful, awful snare/clap sound and a little less reverb on everything, this would be a perfect 10/10. I really hope he'll kick this one live with someone playing real drums to this.

Glad you're loving it. I tried to give it another chance but when it opens all I can envision is Christian Aguilera or Usher pop-and-locking to the glorified pro-tools music.

It’s all good. biggrin I appreciate your opinion and all the opinions on this thread.

They challenge me into thought.

I was just doing some brainstorming in hopes of getting a discussion going.

Yes, I think some people will find this record too “poppy”.

But Prince can’t really sound like Britney. What he can sound like are the professional songwriters and producers her record company employs, some of whom are quite talented (The Neptunes) and have themselves been influenced by Prince’s sound (“I’m a Slave 4 U”).

Nah. Prince has been producing his own records for 30 years. Now he needs a producer? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

clapping I think it will be the farest thing from reality if Prince decided to all suddenly get a producer. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. wink

I had an epiphany of the subconscious last night.

I hadn’t even been listening to this record the last couple of days because I was so uninspired by it. Even the tracks I had already heard and loved were being devalued in the context of what I was hearing as a very messy pop record.

But I’m often wrong in my initial reading and that’s why I usually keep reading.

But this one seemed so simple that I didn’t have much hope of it turning into a grower.

But grow it did, as infectiously and rapidly as napalm dropped on Donald Trumps's wig.

And I wasn’t even listening to it at the time, merely ruminating on the music I had heard 3 days ago in combination with coming to a resolution on many of the negative and positive comments I've consumed here.

I really, really like this album. Only time will tell how good it really is.

Does anyone know who all the players are on the album?

I think there are many. Maceo, SHeila, Temar. But I think Lisa might be on the dance and Part of me thinks Everyones on Get on the Boat.

Anyone know?

I am thinking about doing a new thread about what people think about 3121 now after a few listenings. I noticed from the posts I been reading for the last day or so that the people who were very critical about the album a couple days ago had since change their minds and started to embrace the album.

But I afraid the the thread might get lock or something and the thread would be redirected to this thread. neutral

I dont know for sure but I think that Sheila E might have some drum influence on the last track Get on the Boat. I think that Incense and Candles there seem to be some background voice from Lisa or someone like that and I also think that Lisa might sing a bit on The Dance. I could have sworn I heard Prince called her name on The Dance. I thought that I read somewhere last year on HQ that someone who claimed that they was the engineer on 3121, who gave a sketchy preview about whats the album was going to be like, said that Lisa and Wendy supposed to be involved in a song and yes the title involved with the word Dance, again don't take this as the official word.
Again I haven't listen to the album entirely before making a complete speculation about who's going to be involved with wot.

I really think more minds will change once people pick up the CD and hear it in the best quality. Maybe I'm wrong cause I'm not too familiar with mp3's and their quality but you can hear in spots where the voice is weak and you can hear hissing, like I do in Black Sweat. We'll see in a couple of weeks.

The fidelity of an mp3 is pretty good. It's not like people have been listening to vinyl mono recordings. And if it's at a highbit rate, I don't think too many ears will hear the difference between mp3s and a cd, as they are both, afterall, digital formats.
No hard feelings.

Everyone simply needs 2 thank God and thank Prince 4 the song "3121". It doesn't need 2 compare 2 earlier "Camille stuff", 'cause this is now, and it exceeds even the greatness of the past... Every instrument, every detail, every voice... and the solo is straight outta and of some the greatest Lovesexy guitar. There can be no complaining on this, or on this album.

"Love" is the BOMB.

"The Word" (beautiful, with the breakdown at the end, and finishing with a primal scream)

"Satisfied" (organic classic old school slow jam. comparable 2 some of the best)

"The Dance" (2 beautiful).

"Black Sweat" is infectious. I'm a sucker 4 a Black Album era Linn drumbeat, yeah, but the whole arrangement kicks, and it's length is perfect in context of the album.

Speaking of which, the sequence of the tracks make each track make perfect sense.

I already dug "Te Amo Corazon", but now I really dig it, again, with the context.

U all should be elated at the synth sounds, background atmosheric sounds, etc.

Thank U Prince.
