But that's great - Prince is still picking up new fans!

We all had to start somewhere, and it's usually something like Musicology or Diamonds and Pearls that people first hear and hooks them (i.e. the commercial stuff).

Well, you said yourself it was a kid. Makes sense to me.
There are plenty of artists that I got into late, and then went back and picked up the older stuff. That may have been what happened here, OR it may have been (depending on the kid's age) that he simply didn't appreciate who Prince was until Musicology. It's certainly possible.

We were all new fans once. Everyone needs a way in, shouldn't really matter which album it was (unless it was 1999: The New Master wink).

i spoke to some kid today and he said he was a raging Prince lunatic and he was like omg, i love When Doves Cry, Kiss, Cream, and everything else.

so i asked him... "When did you become a Prince fan?"

"when Musicology came out"

roll:

And what exactly is your point? Is it a bad thing for someone to get into Prince's music? Are you implying that you are superior to this kid by virtue of listening to some guy's music for a longer period of time? Or are you just coming out as an arrogant idiot?

I don't get what the problem here is.

What do you want him to do, jump in a time machine and listen to For You so he can be a "real fan"?

We all start somewhere. Doesn't make you less of a fan just cause you happened to find him later than others.

I'm just glad P has yet another fan.

Maybe all the Prince hype last year got people interested in the hits of the past. I don't think Musicology by itself made too many new fans.

You'd be surprised. I spoke to a few ppl who genuinely feel it's his best album in 15 years.

Just cause you thought it was garbage really doesn't mean others must've just been brainwashed into thinking it's good.

Some really do just enjoy the album.

Some also think Lil John's music is great.

So yeah, I guess every piece of crap has a listener.

Now that's insulting. lol I'm 14, but I absolutely love Prince. Probably because me and my mom were listening to him all as I grew up, and I became addicted to the "1999" album when I was in 3rd grade. She was rockin' out to him when I was in her belly. lol But, being in 8th grade now, it kind of sucks to see all the bandwagon fans, not for Prince, but for people like Usher,Alicia Keys, etc. I am more prone to liking his worse music and non-popular tracks as opposed to most of his mainstream work.

My neice is twelve and she loves Prince. My brother and I exposed her to Prince's music. Since then, she is no longer just the daughter of a Prince fan, she is a Prince fan. She knows all his music.

This thread is something else. I've had a few friends of mine pick up Musicology after listening to my copy. They never had a Prince album before that and some weren't really fans but they dug it so it bugs me a bit to hear folks act like Musicology couldn't or shouldn't bring in any new fans. That's plain ignorant.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm glad to hear that he is gaining new fans.
But it does piss me off when my "friends"- who have jumped on the Prince bandwagon are now telling me what a genius he is. And these are the same people who have busted on me thru the 90's because I still supported my man!

No of course your not preventing anyone from liking "Musicology", and yes you are free to express your opinion. However, as usual, you state your opinions like they are facts. You seem believe your view on things is the honest-to-God truth---really it's just talking shit. I applaud your ability to do so, but you still can't prove that "Musicology" isn't a great album nor that it's not responsible for making new Prince fans. You can only speculate---and you do it really well for someone who is being so negative.
