Prince is a musical genuis, but he's been on Autopilot for many many years. He's not making bold, challenging music anymore. The last Prince album that I really got excited about was 'The Gold Experience' and that was way back in 1995.Just because a person can play alot of different styles doesn't mean they can always create an amazing album.

If you think TRC and the One Nite alone tour were in autopilot then I guess there is no way I can discuss music with you. Same goes for the Truth, NEWS, One Nite Alone, 3121 and LotusFlow3r. They are all great efforts with Prince trying new arrangements, new sounds.

I can only agree with your statement when it comes to Musicology, MS or 20Ten.

Now, tell me The Time are not on autopilot, uh? Honestly same old, same old.

Do you honestly think that these fellas couldn't do a TRC-type album??? Please. Why would they put out something so esoteric after not being in the market for over 20 years? They're trying to regain listeners, not push them even further away! lol They're known primarily for being a fun and funky ass band, so for at least their first album out, that's what they're going to provide. Let them put an album out every year like Prince has done (talk about needing some editorial control), I'm sure they'd start doing some much different shit! It's only inevitable, for TALENTED musicians, of course.

The O7ven are so overall talented that I have no doubt they could do a TRC album, and even make it better, but that's not their aim. They're not trying to preach to us, which I'm so forever grateful for! Lol!

I too think it rocks beyond belief!

Sure they're entitled to their opinions, but championing Prince and doggin' this album are two separate things. And those that champion Prince would probably never admit they liked the album, even if they truly did. They're probably the ones who also say The Time NEVER kicked Prince's ass on stage during the Controversy and 1999 tours!! lol

and not 2 mention all the critcs that wrote reviews about the show and how they even sometimes didn't like prince's show that night but praised how the time ROCKED the joint. i say it like this, yes prince wrote the songs 4 the time but it takes exceptional musicans 2 take that music and propel it even higher

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

One Night Alone was boring as all get out to me...I'd rather have Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea who understand a wider pallette on the piano than Prince does when he tries to get fancy with it.

N.E.W.S.? I've heard much better from the bands he is clearly trying to emulate - Return to Forever and Weather Report to name a few. Those guys worked as peers- that is a part of Princes current output problems...trying to do it all with no checks and balances (friends).

I loved The Truth...

3121 and Lotusflower were subpar, scattershot and poorly produced imo. I even liked a few cuts...but they were overall disappointments.

Any musician can try new sounds (you want some REAL new sounds try Kamasutra which was very NEW but also sucked completely imo) doesn't mean it works as a whole piece.

It's true that this album is the Time doing their thing...with energy, humour and spark along with musicianship and songwriting skill. THE ENERGY behind it is the part I find relevant. Prince has lost that SPARK or muse to make his stuff listenable to me.

Do these guys have the skill and musical knowledge to do stuff like TRC? They CERTAINLY do. Do they want to make a record like that...? Probably not.

That sounds hypocrotical and contradicatory. If people want to champion Prince that is their perogative, no more than people here constantly biggin up the associated artist over and over trashing Prince. Positivity towards Prince just gets under people's skin here which I think is hilarious. I mean who cares. that's what makes the discussion more interesting presenting two sides.

People here do the same thing when it comes to Prince and Van Hunt. The minute VH releases a new CD, its up to his 6th or 7th now, they compare it to Prince's recent stuff. I'm like why not compare it to Prince's 6th or 7th cd unless we will assume Van Hunt will be perfect for the next 25 years? Who's to say the next O7 CD will be just as great? Even though, I feel pretty confident about it but we'll see!! cool

[Edited 10/20/11 11:23am]

You understand completely. If The O7 are in competition with anyone it's their own past works, they either need to match them or surpass them to establish the credibility they want as a band (now being apart from Prince) finally.

No, its the two of you who DON'T understand why people generally don't make comparisons in that way. Its because the music in any given era is affected directly by things like what else is going on in music, the music business trends, the tone of society, musical technology, etc. So, there is MUCH, MUCH more to consider than just simple chronology.

And yes, this is a better record than anything Prince has done in the past decade. Sometimes its about quality over quantity. Prince has been on cruise control for years now. This time, coming out and singing "Still Would Stand All Time" ain't gonna save his ass from a spankin'. lol

I've listened to the whole cd once again and truly don't get what everyone likes about it other than being the original members. It's hard to see how most dogged 20ten , but praise Condensate.
Now I will see pay to see them if they come to town. Once again despite my dislike for their new cd it's so good to have them back together.

I love TRC, 3121, NEWS, One Nite Alone, The TRuth, The Vault and TGE. You don't. Fair enough.

I've seen Prince live a number of times the last 3 years and I have witnessed amazing moments of pure genius.

That's all matters to me.

I'm glad The Time are back. I just think you are all intentionally overparising this nice little cd that Condensate is in the only goal to trash Prince.

And I know I'm right.

Because if you were a proper musician, you'd know that the musicianship all over TRC is the work of a genius. John Blackwell'w work as well is bloody amazing.

The Time can only do their MS sound thingy again and again and again. ONly one member of their band has the musical vocabulary to go further and his name is Jesse Johnson, a bloody talented musician whose solo efforts go far beyond anything on Condensate.

Its not a realistic comparison to only go on chronology.

Example: Let's take "Get It Up" The song is about 9 minutes long. Prince's Automatic - about 9 1/2 minutes long

These songs simply would NOT get any kind if play these days at their full lengths. They would not get full length play in clubs, either. People woould get bored and ask the DJ to change the record.

Why? Tone of society has changed. Attention spans are shorter. All of those solos that make the songs more interesting would have to go before the song even left the studio.

Also, the double entender sex-themed lyrics have been done to death now. It was much newer, less common and more shocking back then. What worked in 1981-1982 will not work in 2011 because so much has changed. You can't simply ignore all of those facts and try to make a fair comaprison based solely on the number album the artists you are comparing are on because how artists create material they intend to sell are rooted in a lot of factors, including the few I just mentioned. That was my point.

Who ever said that TRC WASN'T good musicianship? That was one of things I was impressed with when it was previewed at The Park. But, that alone does not a good record make. It's about feeling as well, and this O7ven album has it in spades.

What?? You can't see why people shitted on 20Ten but love Condensate???? Let's see...20Ten - MOST of it - was a bunch of soulless and lifeless Linn drum nonsense (just to try to capitalize on a minor resurgence of the sound) while Condensate is a plain ol' fun, funny, and funky record, with a lot of tracks that would not only please the hardcore Time fan base, but radio as well.

And there you have it. Question properly answered. lol

Condensate makes me wanna dance all over the place. Although I like 20Ten, it didn't have the same effect. Although Laydown in live concert was funky as hell and made me get offa my seat to dance. Prince needs to let the flood gates open in the studio and not hold back, like he still does in concert. wink

Condensate is like a big party that the guys invited us to lol It's just alot of fun.Listen to the last few minutes of "Toast To The Party Girl".....how can you not get up and dance to that?! How can you not smile when Morris says that he needs some "chili sauce"? The album is filled with fun moments like that.

20Ten has a few great moments but much of it sounds like a lonely man in his own sheltered Paisley Park world.I feel the same way about the two or three albums that came before it.There's not much humor and fun in Prince's recent work.

Exactly! He needs to get a live band in the studio to bounce banter and ideas off of--like in the old days!

How the hell did I sleep on "Faithful" the first couple of times I heard it?!! This song is wonderful; the more I listen to it, the better it gets! It just percolates in your soul like the best cup of coffee you ever anticipated. Loving this one so much! biggrin

If you don't like Prince's music anymore, who gives a shit? I certainly don't give a shit.

7 brains vs P's one = Prince wins easily to me. biggrin

this whole 7 brains 2 one crap is just that ..crap. cause I remember there being 10 members of the NPG on the stage and prince wasn't on every single instrument bringing that music to life. and a lot of the time prince has been the one directing every single movement.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
