Looks like "If I Was Yo Man" is clearly the best or second best track on this album in everyone's eyes, eh? Cool.

This poll is proof enough.

The Prince fan of today doesn't have good taste in music anymore (like the artist himself!).

It couldn't be more embarrissing to see such a poppy song like "If I was yo man" on the top of everyone's list.

"If I Was Yo Man" is one of the best songs they ever did and it should be the second single.

Or maybe you just have a specific veiw of what is "good". Frankly I like Condesate best - it is an old school James Brown workout with a conteemporary twist....but there is a lot of solid pop (hook and melody driven) goodness in this collection. If you don't like good pop music, then you will likely disagree with the rankings.

funksterr

This is tough for me to do because every song on the album is well crafted. There is no filler on this album. I can only rank by what I listen to the most right now.

1. Hey Yo - This is the track that should have been the first single. I love the synths and keys. I love the lyrics. It has a vibe to it that reminds me of the Morris Day I grew up with. And it has that ice cold ending. If I had to introduce today's generation to MD, I would choose this track.

2. Faithful - Classsic Jam and Lewis track. Beautifully produced. So many old-school licks on this I can't even tell ya. I guess THIS IS WHY the band was getting twisted up in Floods last year. wink

2. Toast To The Party Girl - Purple Rain/Dirty Mind Era fun. No explanation needed.

3. GoHomeToYoMan

4. Lifestyle - The keyboards OWN this track.

5. Condensate - pure boys banging on the locker room walls, showing off, shti-talking fun! And Jesse is laying down some serious funk guitar licks.

6. Sick - Obviously the guitar parts are AWESOME, and in my mind the video is Morris Day and Jerome wearing Groucho Marx-style doctor's coats attempting to examine Carmen Electra dancing on a pole.

7. Role Play - The groove on this one is.. just nasty.

8. One Step - This sounds like it can bring the house down live

9. Cadillac - The Time doing 808's???? Wait who produced this? L'Trimm? Yet... I'm feeling it. Again this track ties back well to the Purple Rain characters. Jerome's "What Time It Is" line is straight pimpin'.

10. If I Was Yo Man - another Jam and Lewis classic.

10. Strawberry Lake -

11. And You Don't Know Me Now.

12. Trendin'

I wish I had more time to go deeper in detail about all the tracks, but I've got a lot going today. There is still a lot to be discovered on the album and DVD for many based on the lack of comments on a few things. The album tells a story for example, I haven't seen that mentioned. And this album sounds like how the band might have reperesented themselves in Purple Rain had that oppurtunity existed. Maybe it will exist in the future.

Surely I have a specific view of what is good. I have played and listened to a lot of music over the years in order to develop something like taste. That's why I don't like primitive cliché-ridden pop music like "If I was yo man". Projects which are desperately designed to sell. Very little creativity, no edge, just easy on the ears. The funniest thing is, if Prince fans would hear a similar structured melody like the one of "If I was yo man", let's say from a typical casting band, they wouldn't even admit that they like it or that they consider it being good.

Don't worry, I don't hate on anybody! It's just a challenge to discuss with people who think that a song like "The arms of Orion" is better than "The ballad of Dorothy Parker"

I can't even make a list because it hurts my ears to listen to most of the music. Either it's too poppy or derivative.

1. One Step

( This difference btwn this hi-octane dance track and a Brittany/Gaga number is that Doctor Day hits more notes with his natural voice than B&G can hit with extensive electronic distortion. )

2. Role Play

3. Faithful

( The lyrics make me hate myself for singing along to the irresistable groove here. Who says these fellas don't understand irony? )

4. Cadillac

5. Toast to the party girl

6. Sick

7. Go home to Yo Man

The top six, in heavy rotation, are on my ipod for long distance cycling.

7. is a great slow anti-love ballad and a great lesson for all those foolish people in our trying to get into terrible relationships. Don't say this album's story, for all its fun-key-ness, doesn't have a moral.
