My man..is it that serious? You sound angry and this wasn't posted to piss you or anyone off. Now I know for sure that this is one of Prince's peeps..me and my big mouth (lol)!

Yeah, I do take the weight for this because I forgot about what site I'm on. The Org is no joke when it comes down to the classic debate. And I do hear you about putting people's business out there. Believe it or not, my whole point of posting this was not to vilify Prince..not at all. It was my attempt to inspire long time fans of The Time to raise their voices and get the powers-that-be to listen to reason. Yeah I went there a bit on the whole Prince is scared of the Time thing and reading what I wrote..I can see how one can get some things misconstrued as far as processing what I'm actually saying (or trying to say). Those cats (both Prince and The Time) have always had a good competitive thing going and a lot of times..it came from a genuine place. So when I say that he's scared of them..that's said somewhat in jest. If you know the history between the two then you would know where I'm coming from in this without getting so heated. Peep everyone else's response to this post and you'll notice that everyone is bring up some interesting points as opposed to slamming anyone for their views. This is The Time and Prince and everyone knows their story. Not trying to stir up some shit sir. My whole point in going there with the post was to let it be known how absurd it is for Prince to have any objections about these brothers doing their own thing with The Time or to cause any interference in them releasing new music under The Time name..which he owns. Peace

Yes, you and your big mouth. Im nobodys "peeps" but isnt that kind of rank that someone told you something presumably in confidence and here you go spreading shit about it? Yes everyone knows the history of The Time so dont act like you're schooling anybody. The point is that if it is true that a Time member told you something about the release being prohibited, why post it publicly with someone as mercucial as Prince in the mix of this who is supposedly "preventing the release" knowing it would but Bean on blast with him as well?

It would really be bizarre if the individual I'm responding to didn't have any ties to The Time or Prince because it's shocking to see how serious you're taking all of this if you're just another Joe Schmoe on Prince.org..for real.

"Im nobodys "peeps".."

That was funny! I can see you getting into it with someone in the standing line of a local upscale Starbucks over that comment.

Gotta love message boards 'cause you never know what kind of drama you can lure (or get lured into).. lol

Anyway, be good doc and thanks for the laughs!

I will say I was very suprised at the "press" or "promotional" statements on the Yoshi's website site, for the very recent Time performance, which was full of Prince's name and references to Prince; so much so that I SMH like, wow they're really using their involvement with Prince to bolster their ticket sales.

The show apparently went soldout which is good ('cause I like them too) and have seen them in the past.

To be honest, the statement tied the Time to Prince so tight that I thought Prince was still involved with the group.

Just speculating: I would add that if someone was using me or my "professional standing" publicly to supplement their activities that strong, I might be asking --- what's up with that? And make sure their representations are in line with mine. Nothing personal, its business and they surely would know that.

Furthermore, if Prince is involved, he has every right to make determinations about the finished-product.

I bet it IS Prince. As much as I like him as a musician, he's being a total dick of a human being about the names ...we've all seen his erratic behaviour so it shouldn't be a shock. What difference should it make to him? Except his enormous ego which I figure Jehova wouldn't be too cool about. He IS afraid they are better than him at this point...both bands. I would be too after dreck like his last few efforts.

Exactly!!!

Ok, Jrodndigo, do u enjoy wasting our time like that? What's this "truth"? What did Jellybean tell u? All u said is "Jellybean told me that Prince is preventing the album's release because he's afraid of The Time" and then u extrapolate on your own theories which have nothing to do with the big news u're announcing! So what did he say, just that Prince is afraid of them? Is that "the truth"? How is Prince preventing the album's release? How does Jellybean know that it's out of fear? What's happening exactly? Can't u just goddamn QUOTE him instead of talking and talking and talking and saying nothing? Are you a troll?

Oh, by the way, Mayte told me EVERYTHING about her past relationship with Prince. Listen carefully: they divorced because he loved her but he didn't trust her anymore. Ain't that a goddamn scoop?

Dammit!!!

Wow. I really hit a nerve with this one (lol). I'm serious when I say this..what I wrote did not come from a spiteful place; nor was I trying to spread some nasty rumors. I met the brother not too long ago and I told you what he told me - knowing now that I should've just kept that info private. I'm humble enough to let it be known that I may have stepped out of place for sharing with the public what was told to me by a legit source concerning The Time's album. But the anger I'm getting from this was something I surely had no intentions of stirring. It would be natural for those associated with Prince or The Time to trip in the way you're tripping on me for this. But my goodness..if in fact you're not associated then you have some serious issues by getting so angry with a complete and total stranger on a message board site.

It's obvious I don't do the message board thing too often..

..and it's obvious who's on these message boards 24/7 (lol)!

Relax y'all and get out more often cool

No offense meant dude: being mad at someone on a forum is not like being mad at someone in real life (at least not 4 me). The thing is that ur info was (and still is) quite cryptic lol

And yeah i like spending a lot of time here, i'm not ashamed of it cool Don't worry i get out so much that i LIVE "out" (or at least in hotel rooms, since i've been travelling for 4 months ^^)

I'm not sure about copyright laws when it comes 2 band names. Wham! could b Wham! in UK but had to call 'emselves Wham! UK in the US because there was already a band named Wham! in the US. Lois Lane could be Lois Lane in Europe but had to be Lois L. in the US because of the DC comics trademark... There was this pseudoband named Madhouse in the late 90's (the ones slaughtering Madonna songs) but i think it was a European shit. What we know anyway is that P. has a legal right to prevent the dudes to use The Family and The Time, but maybe i could create a band in France and name it The Time (???).

Ok

Prince owns the name. That's the main thing that's holding it up. Yes they can and may eventually release it under something else, but when you have a 30 year legacy as the Time you tend to want to put it out as that.

To be honest, I always thought that The Time was better than Prince.

How can they be "better than Prince" when Prince single-handedly produced and wrote 90% of their catalog?

I love The Time, but let's be real.

Listen up. If Prince has NO involvement with The Time's new album, then A) It ain't really a Time album, and B) they need to kiss some purple ass because he DOES own the name and is perfectly entitled to stop them from using it.

If they want to release the music and Prince ain't co-operating, then they'll change the name, like The Family/F-Deluxe did. We can speculate all day long as to why Prince ain't co-operating (if this is indeed the case), but at the end of the day, we don't KNOW why, and when it boils down to it - this is business, and Prince is perfectly entitled to protect his legal belongings if he chooses to.

Prince was working with The Time on the "Old Dogs, New Tricks" album as recently as a decade ago. I can't imagine a whole lot has changed in that timeframe. But peep this - Prince is not scared of The Time. What does he have to be scared of? The Time aren't going to sell out Madison Square Garden any time soon.

If anyone can provide one good, solid, reason that Prince should be "scared" of The Time, I'm down to accept this as a theory. But there isn't one.

All good points but no one will be able to give you a solid reason for P being scared of the Time. If these guys want to put a CD they can I think they are full of a lot crap for the long delays and let's be honest if they have issues with P they fanned the flames getting on radio stations over the last year or so and dissing him. I really would not fell sorry if he is causing the hold up I just do not understand how he could when they can simply change the name of the group.

The dude singing his track on the J train in NYC and handing everyone in the car his card with links to buy his music comes to mind. As for a more established act J'Davey dropped a double CD and promoted it like crazy before the Warner deal.

Now if the work isn't done then they have nothing to complain about regarding trouble getting it released. Call us when it's ready and we'll support it. All of this other mess is nothing but old drama from wayback!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

eek No Prince hater here! I just shelled out good bucks to go all the way across the country to see him perform at the Izod! Then, when I got back I went to see Morris Day and the Time at Yoshi's--and they were great! Luv both! If P has a problem with the Time, I sure as hell don't! lol

Jellybean Johnson has confirmed the new Time album is finished. The hold up is Prince. I met him recently in San Francisco while he was in town doing a Morris Day and The Time gig at Yoshi's and he gave me the scoop. There's a lot of frustration behind this ordeal and it is uncertain if we will get to hear the album. As a longtime supporter of Prince, this news really breaks my heart and causes me to lose a bit of respect for him. In case you haven't noticed, Prince has been doing a few Time numbers in his new set (Cool and Jungle Love). And yeah, we all know that he wrote them joints. But at the end of the day it all boils down to one thing y'all..

Prince is still scared of The Time.

Think about it. He's doing not one, but TWO Time songs in his new set. He scared of them while at the same time jocking them because he knows that they are "the cats". But regardless, WE at least deserve to have a Time album produced by The Time. It was a brilliant idea from the get go to put all of these amazing cats together to form a super group and craft an image and sound around them. But what Prince didn't anticipate was The Time becoming a real musical force on their own..one that could easily eclipse what he's doing. You've got Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Monte Moir, and Jellybean Johnson in one group. All of which are hitmaking songwriters and producers in one group and they all come from the exact same musical background as Prince. And then you got a cat who used to be Prince drummer for the longest who winds up fronting this band and takes Prince's performance direction to a whole new place..a place that rivals what Prince does as a performer. This is the Frankenstein monster Prince created that continues to haunt him to this very day.

That's what's going on in his mind..not ours.

WE looking at it like.."this is The Time" and we're finally getting a chance to see them make a real Time album on their own. He shouldn't trip about the fact that they're all just as dope as he is and they can draw just as much attention as he can. I mean..he's Prince for christ's sake! He don't have to trip on anyone because we all know that he is the man and will always be the man. But The Time are "the cats" and we deserve to see the cats smash and give us that Minneapolis funk at this point in our lives before they get to old..that's all I'm saying. To all of the moderators on the Org, I say this with respect and humility and by no means am I here to dis Prince. I needed to let the truth be known and I hope that this will invoke some kind of movement in getting Prince to stop trippin' and let us.."the people, the fans" have the opportunity to enjoy a new Time album and tour.

Very classy of you relaying a personal conversation to a public forum ...

that would also be a semi album. At this point I'd wait 10 years to hear a GREAT cd.

One major difference is that all Prince DOES is music (or so it seems). These other folks have families and day gigs in some cases and have to do the music when they have time - since they are not sitting on back catalog revenue (except maybe Jimmy and Terry). It also takes way more time doing a collaborative project than one person calling all the shots. Usually collaboration leads to a better end result. So don't use frequency of "meh" releases as a gauge for quality.

As far as "haters" you assume anyone who is not on board with every twist and turn of Prince's career is a "hater". I have NO hate for Prince, but do have dislike for his latest output and his attitude about fair name use by bands he has considered friends and family.

As a fan of his music I am entitled to my opinion...it is based on many years of listening and buying. sorry I can't gush over stuff that impresses me as Prince by numbers.

As far as the name thing it flies in the face of all of Prince's "spirituality" that he himself dredges up ad-naseum. I could care less about his constant faith spewing, but if you are going to continually ride the spiritual enlightenment train, it would be great if you stops along the way weren't just to get off and piss on people. His behaviour speaks volumes of his true self.

First of all you do not like P 's recent output that is your opinion which means nothing to loads of people who do like his most recent output. I think a guy that is working independently of a major record label who can find a way to get his music out speaks volumes over a group of guys working with top notch producers who cannot get the music out. I am sorry they can change the name slap up a website or sell the CD at the concerts just put it out already and stop making P out to be some wizard that can stop you. I think it is a load of crap.

In addtion, there is no fair use issue. The guys do not own the name they never have. P did not steal the name from them they never owned it. I think they have had 30 years to get over and they need to.

We have no idea about what is going on behind the hype but we do we know that these guys have not had that great of a relationship in the past. What has happened in the past is still going on and none in the public have enough information to judge as all stories have 2 sides.

I really find it interesting that you failed to mention that P was not pissing on anyone when he let Morris use the name over the last 20 years and since when does being spiritual have anything to do with being a sucker or not handling your businesss.

Wouldnt it be funny if the Family and the Time show up somewhere with SLAVE written on the side of their faces?

lol Slave to whom though? To themselves? They all had many years after their association with Prince, to make it on their own and create new songs and move on with their lives. They don't need to hang on to Prince's coat strings to do so, as we can all see that Prince moved on a long time ago. They could have just renamed themselves and continued their career as a group, without hanging on to the original name. They still have the same faces, so it's not like they wouldn't be recognizable today or not appreciated for their contributions to the Minneapolis sound and being part of introducing that sound to the rest of the world. Unless the "attachment to Prince" is what they think will boost the sale of their album or careers. Sometimes you have to let go and move on to grow. Lastly, the original Time is no competition to Prince. It's obvious, Prince hold his own legacy, long after his disassociation with many of his past band members, and as anyone can see, has apparently moved on with his own career while continuing to collaborate with other artists.

Besides, for all we know the OP of the thread could be someone associated with the Time camp hoping maybe P or someone from P's camp read this thread of their complaint. After all , this seems to be the forum where some random, past Prince associates seem to show up quite often.

Well the hands on the clock must not go round for you to have made a post like this. You might have made a bad situation even worse. To you, I say congratulations. Here's to another year of wondering what the next Time album will sound like. Bravo!

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
