In 1989/90 I was a member of the Minneapolis chapter of Queer Nation. Gary Schiff, who is now an elected member of the Minneapolis board of supervisors, proposed that we do an action at Prince's Glam Slam Club on their 'ladies' night'. I never understood the point of the action, but I remember being outside Glam Slam handing out Queer Nation flyers when Jerome Benton showed up. I was really excited at the time to see Jerome in the flesh, but he dampened my enthusiasm by what he said to us. He said "If god wanted gay people he would have created Adam and Steve not Adam and Eve" He actually said that! He said it to me! I've never forgotten what a douche-bag he was in that particular moment.

That statement is ridiculous to me because it's nothing to do with what God wants. God probably doesn't want people to get hit by trucks or be born with facial deformities but it happens - the act of being born and the conduct of living are two totally separate things . Honestly it doesn't sound like something that would even come out of Jerme's mouth - he doesn't seem that religious and political. You sure that wasn't an impersonator? lol

Next time anybody says that to you under any circumstance just look them dead in the eye and say "If God didn't want me then I wouldn't be here...but I am here!" It will shut 'em down real quick.

Thanks, but I'm an atheist. It absolutely was Jerome Benton. He looked in my eyes and said it to me. I was there. It was January 1990.

Ok first I'm not gonna use the description as gay cause these days "acting gay" is so far from what we think it is ive seen a lot of very masculine men loving men more than me.....anyway i digress, seems like anyone who delt with prince had a VERY blurred sexuality, never really knew what preference they were, the boys looked like girls in "blouses" and they all acted really ummmmm.....feminine....heck the only way we knew prince wasn't gay was the fact that he was such a whore....anyway who really knows, personally i dont even care if he was gay straight bi an alien or etc.....but your wife has a point with utcm ive always thought chris and tricky's relationship was a little questionable, what grown man is gonna chill in the bathroom with his homie while he naked in the tub, that just aint right lol....i'm just saying

My wife and I were watching UTCM the other night and she is under the impression that Christopher and Tricky were gay lovers who whored themselves out to women to make money. When Prince fell in love with Mary, all hell breaks loose because, as Tricky put it, "You broke the rules of our partnership..."

I of course laughed at her ridiculousness as she went on to point out other instances of Jerome being gay. We went to the Family Jamm in 2003 and she started talking about how gay he acted during the Family's performance, running and prancing around. The more I think about it, I think she may be on to something.

Some of y'all seem to know some of these folks personally, hence the question.

Is Jerome gay?

funny when I watched UTCM, I couldn't put my finger on what was askew-ed about whole Christopher and Tricky "partnership" and I did get the bewildering notion that Tricky was jealous of Mary but I couldn't make that final connection. YOUR WIFE hit it on the head. That is exactly what I think this movie was about.
As far as if Jerome himself is gay. I haven't a clue. I get some gay vibes from him, but I am not convinced that this is not all part of his act, his professional persona. Sort of like the Wayan brothers.

Oh you are made me remember something.

One of the Dames (Robin Power's girl group) is an Orger and she is asian. She mentioned that Jerome came onto her, but she didn't have a clue that he was trying to come on to her. It seems he had a thing for Asian women. So I am convinced that any gay vibes he put out are part of his act.

You all realize that being heterosexual or homosexual or bi or whatever has nothing to do with how a person acts, right?

And you all realize that gender identity and sexual orientation are completely separate issues, yes?

Ok, good.

I think the bigger, more relevant question, is why did Jerome and Morris both use stage personas that were so "campy/flamboyant" aka "gay" in the now-outdated sense?

I mean both of them would put on that stereotypical black-female exaggerated voice that many gay men (white and black) use. I think they even would say things like "honey," etc. ANd let's not forget Morris' opening scene in PR during the LGC montage where he's vacumming the house in a do-rag all done up like a woman's etc. holding the suit in front of himself in mirror.

Yes it's this weird combination of "cool" suave, whatever, but it also can easily be interperted as "gay" as in the stereotypically campy, flamboyant etc.

Kind of like the "Men on film" skit from In Living Color.

So the question is, why would two straight (which I believe they are) men purposely act that way?

The only way this thread would be an insult is if Jerome was an insecure homophobe - which perhaps he is.

Otherwise we need to get passed thinking that suspecting someone of being gay is some sort of insult...

I was just saying that because something is possible doesn't make it probable. There are not nearly as many "down low brothas" as magazines and media try to make us believe. Its sensationalism. That's what has driven our culture (American culture) to be suspicious of everyone all of the time.
As has been stated, some people on here know some of the people that get discussed. How often has this question come up? Almost never. Sometimes an apple is just an apple. As a matter of fact, MOST times it is. Only a few have worms in them. lol

Glad you mentioned this; because between the media and the voices of prince.org every brotha is on the down low and every wifey out there is but a mere beard. No reason for me to ever come home to the States and expect to date or be married because apparently everyone's on the DL bored2

Actually it is based on a few bible passages so if you came back with that comment a real bible scholar would just shoot back at you with those bible passages. Not that it matters because a true Christian should not be judging anyone anyway and unfortunately quite a few Christian seem to have forgotten those passages concerning judging. All sins are the same and we all have sinned.

As far as Jerome is concerned I believed in the movie they are Gigolos who start competing for the same woman. If P could fucking direct or act the public might have been able to see that instead you get really poor campy acting.

I do not think Jerome is gay since many Orgers have talked about him hitting on woman at after shows to the point of being harassing.

They are acting like "Pimps" The do-rag is Pimp gear from back in the day and there was a time when wearing one was not considered campy or gay in the black community. From the late 40s to the early 70s lots of brothers had perms and wore "do-rags" Even Malcolm X had one in his young years.

The whole Morris Day character is the over the top, pimping, i am the greatest thing since sliced bread, persona that you could have found on any urban street corner back in the day.

Another example of this can be seen in the movie Friday After Next. The characters Money Mike and Pinky who are played by comedian Kat Williams and Clinton Powell both have processed, shoulder-length hair, talks in that quintessential high-pitch voice, dress in shiny, bright-colored two-pc suits and are accompanied by attractive women. Neither of them are perceived as being gay or outdated. Hell, even Pinky rides around in a pink stretched limo.
That applies only to Morris's persona.
I believe Jerome's role is that of the "manservant" or hype man.
And I truly believe that is the only role that Jerome knows to play and it carried over to the role of Tricky.
That's why he was soo at home with tossing rose petals into the tub that Prince/Christopher was soaking in, or any of the other scenes that could be looked at a being "gay"
I think the confusion w/ the line of "you broke the rules of our partnership" is exactly what was mentioned in a previous post. Chris fell in love w/ their target. It was no longer about getting the money and running anymore. But, actually, Tricky broke it first when he said to Christopher that he kinda liked Mary.
In conclusion, although the relationship between Christopher and Tricky is a bit strange, it's definitely not a homosexual one.

@ this thread, only on the org. Do-rags have nothing to do with being "gay".lol If a straight woman wears a scarf on her head does that mean she's gay? lol Do-rags have been around since the 50s. If you look at some of the black acapello singing groups in the 50s and early 60s, and how some of them used to wear their hair, in waves/some processed with chemical, it was the do-rag that would keep the waves in place, when they either covered it before performing or slept with a do-rag or net to keep the processed waves in place. Has nothing to do with being gay. I never got the impression that Jerome was gay or Morris for that matter, and I think some folks just want to find any reason these days to define another as gay.

I am ashamed of this answer... but I believe it is for easy laughs. I just saw Shrek 4ever... or whatever it is called. There was an Orge in the movie that you could tell was gay acting, with the feminine sounding voice and calling everyone "honey" and "chile". You could tell this cartoon Orge was flamboyantly gay... and his lines got a lot of laughs.

Men on Film, Martin's LaWanda, Flip Wilson's Geraldine... was all on the same type of comedy... men acting effeminine.

Reel

I always suspected that Jerome was gay, it isn't too hard to fathom, particularly the way he prances around on stage in his manservant role holding a damned mirror for Morris Day. As far as the movie UTCM, well I guess you can look at it from both angles. The angles of 2 con-artists who's skeem gets busted up when one falls in love... or two lovers who's relationship get's busted up when one falls in love.
Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?
