Should we have a "known fakes" sticky on prince.org?

MoQuake has a long-running thread with images of counterfeit CDs, mostly by associated artists from the 1980s, that have been discovered on the internet:

http://www.moquake.com/fo...3&t=31

I recently started a thread on this same subject in the Associated Artists forum, as I had a question about possible counterfeits of Sheila E.'s self-titled album:

http://prince.org/msg/5/360791

In that thread, TheDigitalGardener suggested that I start a thread here about whether it would be useful to have a "known fakes" sticky in the Marketplace forum on prince.org. I don't know how many prince.org members are also members of moquake, but I wasn't aware of the moquake thread until squirrelgrease pointed it out to me. It seems like it would be useful to have a thread on prince.org where people could submit images of counterfeit discs, and make it a sticky so that everyone sees it before they start buying and selling CDs. Maybe our thread could contain a link to the moquake thread and vice versa.

I expect that this counterfeiting problem will only get worse as more Prince and associated artist CDs go out of print. We need to be able to keep up with what the counterfeiters are doing, so that people don't waste money on fake CDs (unless that's what they want to do). What do you think?

The only argument I can think of against it is that pointing out the differences between the fakes and the real CDs might help the counterfeiters improve their "product" to look more like the genuine article. But not having the information out there is worse in my opinion.

That is of course a possibility, but i'm with you in that having the information would do more people good than bad.

The idea of a thread such as the one MoQuake has had been talked about during the years between housequake.com closing and moquake.com coming online. Housequake had a similar thread and that's why the moQ pix have the HQ watermark. I would suggest that any photo of a fake posted in moQ's thread also have a watermark across the pertinent info, so the bootleggers can't take the image and re-post it in their eBay ads.

I think a thread here would obviously be very beneficial, but credit and links to moquake.com would be a must.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The prince.org sticky wouldn't necessarily have to repost all the images in the MoQuake thread, just link to it and allow orgers to post whatever additional images and information we may come across. The most important thing, I think, is to raise awareness of the problem and collect updates on which CDs have been counterfeited to date.

The watermarking sounds like a good idea, at least for images of real CDs included for reference purposes.

Thanks!

How do you add a prince.org watermark to images? I'd like to take a couple more photos of my Vanity 6 fake to get the sticky off to a good start, but I don't know how to add a watermark as squirrelgrease has suggested.

I can do it if you send me the pix. Otherwise any graphics program can be used.

I figured it out. See my post in the new sticky. Thanks!
