mad i just started posting here earlier this month, and the general discussion was truly the best part of this site. i think it's why the site was so popular.

ben & matt, i think you've made a mistake. you decision was unthoughtful to all of the people who posted on the general discussion forum. yeah maybe it's a pain to lock threads and delete whatever, but didn't you know you were getting into that when you became a mod? this decision was way too extreme.

"Unthoughtful"? I strongly disagree. I choose to view it as thoughtful in the first place for giving us a stage to sound off. If they want to turn this into "Napkinfolding.org", they can.

3. Conflicting signals part 1... When Ben said Pook was funny when he came back from spamming OKP... what was that? When he replied favorably to a thread dedicated to poking his outbox... what was that? Even some of Matt's replies to his extremely unpopular Shausler decision could be called flame warrish - hey, even I, of all people, practically ignored disparaging comments made about me by replying only twice, and let me tell ya I had a lot more to say. What happened to "just ignore it" or "send an orgnote"? I guess the desire to defend oneself from personal attacks can be quite overwhelming.

3. Conflicting signals Part 2... Pook response to Ben's "Pook is funny" comment was "it's official!".. or something along the line, implying it was condoned or tolerated by Ben himself, Ben did not say "NO! Spamming OKP would be unacceptable!" Instead, on another thread, he said something like "let's hope OKP sees this for what it was... a joke." Yeah.. but isn't this also a way of saying "spamming can be just a joke"... including on the Org?

I am one of the biggest advocates of free speech you'll ever find and a staunch supporter of individual freedoms and rights. Now, where does anything state that you have the God-given RIGHT to run your mouths on a privately owned and maintained website to the point where it pisses off the very people who created and maintain it (FREE of charge, I might add, and with NO bullshit pop ups and banners)? Where does this inalienable right originate exactly?

The OWNERS of this site can do whatever they want, just as you can with YOUR website,
and the only reason that we can shoot off our mouths is because THEY LET US. They have created the forum, built the stage and can shut down the theatre whenever they like; in short: "management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone."

When they close it, where will the criers cry? Where will the whiners whine?

GD is my favorite forum. I mean, how much is there to say about Prince 24 hours a day? He seems to like discussing things other than music and so do I. Discuss what you like, but please, have a little respect (especially for Ben and Matt) and see if we can keep it somewhat civil. If we can't, I wouldn't blame the moderators for closing the whole show. It's thier party.

Glad to see there are other people here with sane minds. Free speech is free, unless someone else is paying for your "free speech" with time, money and headaches. The headaches can be avoided, of course. I don't always come here because sadly, it's not really a Prince site most of the time. Maybe now it will be.

There isn't too much to be said about Prince 24 hours a day, but at least there is a place where you can go anytime and discuss Prince with other fans. That's the whole point of this site in my opinion.

The beauty of having a forum for general discussions as well as a forum for discussion of Prince's music and such was that it allowed you NOT to go to the general discussion forum. You could have all the conversations about Prince in the Prince forum and never would have had to look at the general discussions forum.

It's been said before, but I'm gonna say it again anyway. All of you who are complaining that there aren't any discussions on Prince anymore could easily make up Prince topics of your own...to *gasp* be discussed. If you have, and you didn't get many replies, then apparently others didn't want to discuss that particular topic -make up a new one or join in on one...there are many. But, don't sit there and stew about those who were in the general discussion forum talking about general discussions.

Some are saying for those people to go to a different board and talk. What the fuck for? We are here because most of us have at least one thing in common, and that is Prince and his music. So, why would anyone want to go and discuss things elsewhere, when they aren't getting the entire package as they can here - talking to those they've gotten to know from this site, and reading information on Prince, whether that be news, gossip, or discussions from people around the world.

Now...I don't agree with Shausler's thread being locked. He may post a few pointless threads, but he's never harmed anyone. He brought a smile to many of our faces, whether it was from something he said, or the overall stupidity of what he was saying. To close it down because someone thought it pointless is motherfuckedup to me. It was that moderators opinion that it was pointless. I don't think there was even much of a chance given to see what type of discussion would stem from his thread. There have been many pointless threads on there, including mine, and those were left untouched. I understand that you all don't have the time, nor would you want to, to sit and moderate each and every topic that is posted. However, a little consistency would be nice to see. To me, it seemed like Shausler was being excluded.

I give props to all that contribute to this site, not only the creators, but to all of us. We all make this site what it is. If we all got along or all agreed as to what should be discussed it'd be a pretty sappy place to be. It's the diversity that makes this a colorful and interesting place to be.

Well, that's all I've got to say about that. smile

I've always said my only problems are when people's actions cause me a lot more work than I normally would have just to keep the site running. And that's happened lately.

I think we're all very convienently overlooking this one extremely important aspect in all this...that our collective actions in the GD forum have ended up causing Ben more work than he has time for...and that it was that issue which seemed to fuel his decisions as of late...not simply that he personally didn't think some thread topics in the General Discussion forum were worthwhile...it's obvious to me that, whatever has been happening behind the scenes and out of eyesight of all of us, the way we as members chose to approach the GD forum has been causing some major headaches for Ben & Company...and the way we as members approached the GD forum was obviously different than how we chose to approach all the other forums...

And actually, I agree with what Ben has done, to an extent anyway...because I think he should have been doin' it from day 1, in all honesty...that is, setting a tone on P.org which forces all us members to take some responsibility for what occurs on the site...Right now, nobody feels they have any responsibility whatsoever to making the site something that Ben wants it to be and that he hoped it would become...we all tend to act like nothing we do on this site will hurt the site one iota...that nothing we do will cause the people who run the site any headaches or any hassles...and that nothing we do on this site will cost Ben & Company anything in terms of time and money...right now I think that we're paying, in a way, for having that way of thinking...

Shutting down the GD forum--while a bit extreme--might cause us collectively to finally realize that we, too, hold responsibility for what the site becomes...The idea of self-moderation is nice--in theory...but ultimately it was something very few of us actually felt like doing...a long time ago I suggested daily thread limits, thinking that it would in effect force us to moderate ourselves since it was obvious we, collectively, had no desire to do so voluntarily...that if we were forced to ask ourselves "Do I really want to make this into a thread?" would ultimately benefit the site more than creating 16 threads an hour would simply because we can...and that I saw no harm in us asking each other to think first before tossin' up threads on the GD forum, instead of simply relying on the "If you don't like it, then don't read it" response...

I also feared that, if we continued to completely ignore moderating ourselves, that Ben and Matt would step in and do the moderating for us instead...and that looks like what has indeed happened.

The GD forum hasn't been done away with forever...even Ben said in his post that closing down the forum was just "for now"...that he felt we all "needed a break" from it...and asked for suggestions for creating a better GD-type forum, that he was all ears...hardly sounds like Ben is the monster who stole some crowning jewel from P.org that we all loved so much...so all the worry about the GD forum being "banished" from P.org forever are a little premature and a bit unnecessary...

A lot of this stuff reminds me of the seemingly endless collection of television viewers who do nothing but complain about the content of television programming, yet somehow fail to ever get up off thier ass and turn the damned thing off or change the channel. I've said repeatedly that the best way to sink a thread is to LEAVE IT ALONE. When you engage the idiotic opinion(s) of the mindless wretch who wrote the thing, you lend creedence to it and soak the proverbial fire with gasoline.

When I see a TV program that offends me, I change the channel. When I see a business that offends me, I avoid doing business with them. When Rush Limbaugh offends me, I turn off the radio. So, when I see a post that's offensive or rediculous, I tend to ignore it. Why is that hard?

This website is what we make it, and whatever that turns out to be, at the end of the day, it's just a tiny little, utimately insignificant website that I happen to enjoy visiting.

Hell, You guys have managed to ignore and sink dozens of my topics and I don't recall ever saying anything rude or genuinely insensitive to anybody.

Well i've been away for a while and i'm amazed at what's happening. For what it's worth here's some thoughts.

1] The Gd forum seemed tobe a great place tobe, it was one great big get to know you session, loads of silly threads [some started by me!], but lots of serious threads as well that allowed a great forum to exchange thoughts. Sure there was flaming but thats inevitable,
it goes with the territory.

2] We should accept and respect Ben and Matts wishes, afterall this is THEIR site, however perhaps they lacked a great deal of foresight in setting up the GD forum. Even a blind man could see that calling a forun a General Discussion is an open invitation for silly threads.

3] If cost is an issue then surely a simple message to that effect to all orgers would have been respected from day one.

4] It seems that every aspect of Prince has already been discussed on the Prince forum. How long before Ben doesn't approve of what we are discussing on that site?. Its patently clear on number of threads alone that the GD forum is the most popular so why not bring it back with some restrictions.

5] Why not get rid of the other forums ie 'other artists' etc.

6] why not charge a small fee and make it a members only site, would that help?.

I will truly miss the GD section, closing it seems togo against the very reason why the org was started in the first place ie freedom of thought and information. I have lurked from day one and the org when it was changed succeeded in bringing out and uniting the Prince community more than at any other time. Its a shame that we are heading the NPG way.
Bottom line is that I am hugely grateful to Ben and co for setting this up in the first place but problems like this should have ben nipped in the bud sooner and communication should have been a lot clearer.

Get over it.

I think Ben's decisions was an excellent one - and I think those of us with at least some scrap of intelligence saw it coming a mile away.

Do you have any idea how much bandwidth the general discussion must take up? Did you know that high bandwidth costs money, and takes a shitload of maintenance? Perhaps the energy should be better devoted to, surprise surprise, discussion of PRINCE and his music?

Finally we can be free of the ridiculous, sexist posts of the Chronic, the annoying and proliferating JW propaganda, Nep2nes' highly aggravating "know-it-all-princess" comments, and just about anything posted by Oceana. I could go on, but I can't be bothered wasting my time on any more of these worthless fools.

If the rest of the idiots are so outraged by Ben's decision, why don't you fuck off and create your own website to indulge your banality.

This place is better without you.
