I agree - I suspect there will be more.

Even the talk of PP parties again, etc... suggests that he wants to do more stuff locally this year (as well as a tour, it seems).

Would love to be there if I could. I'm glad he's playing his home town again though - to everyone that is going, have fun!!! rose

Prince to jam out the kinks at Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis

  • Article by: Star Tribune
  • Updated: January 15, 2013 - 9:59 PM

http://www.startribune.co...ml?refer=y

Each evening of this rare three-night club engagement will have a different approach as he breaks in a new band.

After months of flirting with the Dakota Jazz Club, Prince has booked a rare three-night hometown engagement this week at the 300-seat nightspot in downtown Minneapolis.

The late-notice shows -- two per night -- went on sale Tuesday at lunchtime and sold out right away at prices ranging from $70 for Wednesday's gigs to $250 for Friday's.

Each night promises a different approach: Wednesday's is billed as an audition for a new drummer and improvisational jam (with a set by DJ Rashida), Thursday's is described as an "after-party vibe" and Friday's has been left as a "surprise."

Prince is reportedly breaking in a revamped band.

The shows have been in discussion for more than a month but were confirmed only late Monday night, Dakota co-owner Lowell Pickett said.

The concerts aren't even billed officially as "Prince" shows, but Pickett said, "He just wants to play."

Show times are 8 and 11 p.m., with a 2 a.m. curfew.

To combat scalping, the Dakota will require that the person who bought the ticket be the one using it. Nonetheless, tickets are being advertised on Craigslist for as much as $1,000.

Prince hasn't played a high-profile gig in his hometown since July 7, 2007, when he pulled off three shows -- one at Macy's downtown Minneapolis, another at Target Center and a short nightcap at First Avenue.

His last public performance in the Twin Cities was a late-night affair for $40 in 2009 at his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen. His only club gig in recent memory was at the old Rupert's nightclub in Golden Valley in 2000, a benefit for his late bodyguard.

Paisley Park wasn't an option this week because the Grammy-nominated New York band fun. -- known for the megahit "We Are Young" -- is rehearsing there for a tour that begins next week at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.

Prince has occasionally hung out at the Dakota for dinner and concerts, as recently as last month's Tower of Power gig. However, he never has actually stepped onstage there despite numerous hints of it, including an Esperanza Spalding concert in 2009 when an amp was set up for him.

Special rules will be in effect at the Dakota: No cellphones or cameras; food service will be stopped each night, and the tables and chairs near the stage will be removed for Friday's events -- a first for the club.

Prince originally envisioned six nights at the Dakota but kept changing his mind, according to Pickett. He still has the venue rented for Sunday and Monday, but as of now there are no plans for any more shows.

Since 2010, Prince has been touring sporadically, mostly playing multiple nights in arenas in such major markets as New York, Los Angeles and Toronto. His most recent run was three nights at Chicago's United Center in September.

After a relatively quiet year for the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Prince fan sites have speculated for weeks about his plans for 2013. These public rehearsals with new band members suggest he is planning a more ambitious concert schedule.

Check out the video report by CBS Minnesota about the ticket sales:

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Even if you’ve seen Prince, you’ve likely never seen him like this.

On Tuesday morning, Prince announced he’ll do “open rehearsals” at the Dakota Jazz Club in downtown Minneapolis as part of prepping for an upcoming tour.

That means fans get to see him basically practicing with a concert feel. Tickets are already sold out.

Wednesday night’s show is called “Soundcheck,” Thursday night’s is “Jam” and Friday is listed as a “Surprise.”

The owner of the Dakota said it’s the biggest headliner to ever play at the club.

For the price of $80, Jake Nyberg gets a seat on Wednesday night.

“If you know a thing about music, or even if you don’t, he’s a bucket list musician for everybody,” Nyberg said.

Dakota Jazz Club owner Lowell Pickett says Prince will be trying out his newest drummer.

“We were same the year in high school,” said Dakota Jazz Club technical director Craig Ecklund. “He was a Central guy, I was a Washburn guy. We knew there was this killer guitar player out of Central High School.”

Picket says Prince wanted to play at the Dakota because it’s a place he’s frequented in the past himself.

Interested in finding a ticket even though they’re sold out? Craigslist has them going anywhere from $400 to $1,000.

I'm sorry to be such a whiner yesterday but it really sucks to have no way of getting to these shows when they're right in my backyard. I've been begging Prince to play here again for years. I guess what would make me feel better is knowing that some of you guys know the feeling (and also knowing that some great bootleggers will be recording these shows).

I could only afford tix to one show so I paid my money and took my chances on 2morrow nights Thursday "jam". I'm hoping it really is a more aftershow vibe as advertised , with lesser known songs, a lot of guitar! Perhaps Empty Room, Love Thy Will Be Done.... I dunno.... I'm thinking Friday might be more of a run through of a "concert" type show with more of the hits... if my predictions are true i'll be happy with thursday.... I've seen prince so many times I'm OK if I don't hear Purple Rain or Kiss, though if he plays em, thats fine too.... just really hoping for the deepr cuts!! haha... we will see... never know with Prince!

Seriously stop whining. Get down to the venue & do the work. If I was there and didn't have a ticket I'd still be stoked I'd have 3 cracks at getting in. I didn't have a ticket for the Conga Room show but was able to get one last minute. It helps if it's just you going.

I already said I was through whining.

The venue doesn't allow you in if you aren't the one who bought the ticket.
I was going to go with someone else.
I am a broke kid who lacks the money to pay for the scalper prices.
So yes, I am through whining and am now just happy that something cool is happening in Princeland even if I will have to miss out.

I have a feeling you will have more opportunities to check P out in MPLS. He seems to be digging in for a bit.

Interview was nice, but underwhelming.

I had to laugh at how the girls said Prince found them (paraphrasing) through YouTube and MySpace. I thought Prince hates the internet and doesn't go online. lol

Maury Glover's (Ch 9 reporter) remark about how Prince repeated, once again, after he'd finished jamming, the tired chestnut about being 'so funky he can't sleep with himself' was a groaner. Prince is a witty, funny guy...he should just be spontaneous, and stop the overused, scripted 'witticisms'.

The girls seem nice. I really like Hannah. Good luck to them. I also loved that yellow couch.
