I'll start by saying that I thought Janelle Monae was interesting but her rendition of Smile was awful. As for Prince, performance wise the show was great, but.....well it would have been nice if he didn't play so many of those hits that he supposedly played for the last time several years ago. Compared to past shows, this one was kind of stale. And yes, it's an arena show so he needs to play some hits, but the man has 30+ albums. Couldn't he have come up with a better variety? Compare this set list to some of the songs we got on the Musicology tour. The only really interesting moment was the Gingerbread Man song. For about 5 seconds I got excited when he started playing Condition of the Heart, but after a few notes he goes into Do Me Baby. And did we really need two Time songs? I'm glad I went but it would have been really nice to hear some songs I've never heard him play live before instead of the same songs I've been hearing since I first saw him live on the Purple Rain tour.

I bet this boils your potatoe

"come often, because every time we play it's always something new. ... No concert is ever the same. I got a lot of hits" Prince

rolleyes I love his music and his spirit.. but this seems to be that complaint that everyone has, I wish he knew his true fans love alot of his music, he can put a little Musicology in there. He's awesome and I cant say much because I'm not him.. but next time be sure your actions match the statement lol

whistle hmm so i'm not the only one

I live in the UK and when I heard Prince was touring the states I was kind of jealous. However, having seen the set list I gotta say (and I never thought I would say this) but it all sounds a bit SAMEY...this is pretty much the basis of the gigs he has been playing the past seven years.

It certainly reflects the core songs played at the 21 Nights at the O2 in London (although clearly many of you guys in the States didn't get to see that set of shows).

It just seems so odd that Prince has always been so excited about his new music but never bothers to promote it and instead focuses on material that is over 20 years old!!!!!

While the overall consistency of the newer albums IMHO have not been as good since around 94/95 onwards (depending on when you consider TGE to have been recorded rather than belatedly released) there has without doubt been many wonderful songs in the past 15 years.

So why not play more of them?

The 21 nights gigs had a decent sprinkling of newer songs (including those from Planet Earth) - not every night but some. For me these were the highlights as it reminded me of the heady days of of the 80s when you heard new songs played at concerts, sometimes as the bulk of material!

I used to get cross when people said Prince was becoming a nostalgia act - but on the strength of the MSG set list I am starting to agree.

What a shame sad

[Edited 12/30/10 2:24am]

i have a few dvds of the o2 shows and have every single night and aftershow that was done. back then i said that the UK got the same musicology tour back in 04 with just a few new songs because of PE. now we have the symbol stage with basically the same songs still. the nostalgia is on full throttle and needs 2 pull up off the pedal.

Okay, so there was a stir in the audience before Prince's performance. Now no one knows for sure if it was actually Prince walking through the audience at MSG last night, before he performed, but if it was, it sure caused a major stir in MSG and people were going nuts. If it was actually Prince, he walked up near sections 85 up to near the 330 section walkway, and down between sections 224 and 225 walkway, straight down towards the lower sections (85?), the made his way down to the stage area, and went through the door. Some say it was an impersonater, but we need confirmation from either Drfunkenberry or one of the moquake mods to find out if this was the real "Prince". Anyway, all I have to say is I enjoyed that show, to the point where it drained so much energy out of me, but it was good and positive energy that Prince brought to MSG last night.

Say wha...........if that was Prince, I can fly.................

lol Yes, a few people confirmed that it was a "Prince impersonator". Supposedly some guy named Marcus from Chicago. He caused quite a ruckus walking through the crowd and answering to folks calling him "Prince". Sad thing is, some of those folks actually fell for it. Imagine those same folks telling their friends/family members that they spoke to Prince, when it wasn't Prince at all.lol

Wow! this thread has exploded, and thanks everyone for your input, and yes Prince's performance of "Question of U" was phenomenal. Lawd have mercy and 1000 bejeezuses, the Brotha had the audience in "awe" and took MSG by storm last night. He totally seduced us when he sang "Question of U" lyrics and captivated the audience with his sensual, teasing moves, especially when he pulled his shirt open and teased us more. lol That was a performance that will be talked about for a while by those who attended.

I'm so glad I finally got to see him perform that song live especially after watching a video in the past of him performing that song at one of his concerts years ago.

The energy was overflowing in MSG last night, and I'm beginning to wonder if it was Prince's fault that a sudden blizzard hit NYC a couple of days ago, since we haven't had one like that since 2003, and somehow recently hit us suddenly, when Prince came to town. Now I'm hearing there's another storm threat, possibly hitting the East Coast again, and we know who to blame if that happens. lol (j/k). One thing for sure is that Prince had the entire audience at MSG on their feet through his performances last night. The piano medley was great to hear with songs like "Do Me Baby", "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover". and we were begging for more and he gave it to us with about 3 to 4 encores. I loved when the Cindi Lauper got on stage and blew us away with her phenomenal voice. I almost felt when Cindi graced us with her beautiful voice, that went right through your soul and gave you chills, it was like vocals of the s the late, great Ivory Queen of Soul, Ms. Teena Marie was in the arena, and Ms. Teenawill surely be missed by many. worship

NYC did not want Prince to leave the stage. He owned MSG last night. The section I was in, section 225, was a great view by the right arm of the symbol, and basically no one in my section sat through the performance. The energy was definitely madness at last night's show, and although 12/18 projected a lot of energy, last night's show had more.

I did like Janelle's performance, and although there were some that were not familiar with her as an artist, they became familiar last night and showed interest. I have to say that her vocals are fantastic, but at times the music was louder than her vocals, so it was sort of "in and out" sound issue, during her performance, but she handled herself well.

The Prince imposter should be thrown in jail. The way people started pushing and shoving to get near him created a safety issue. People literally jammed the aisles and I couldn't believe how people fell for it, and I bet half those people will spend the rest of their lives thinking they actually got that close to Prince.

I also want to comment on the people defending last night's set list. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was disappointed that it contained mostly the familiar hits we've heard live over and over again. I know there's no way everyone will be happy with every song choice, but I have to wonder who Prince is catering to and who he thinks his fan base is these days. Someone suggested that the not so familiar songs should only be played for the diehards at the aftershows. Well you know what, there were plenty of diehards at MSG last night, myself included.

And since when does being a diehard require that you go to aftershows? I've only been to two aftershows in my life and for both of those, I knew I was getting in before I got there. Don't confuse the word diehard with fanatic, which I think many people who went to Butter last night are. It also blows my mind that people think they are entitled to be let in to an aftershow simply because they showed up in the cold or because of how much money they spent, but I digress.

Again, I'll just reiterate that given Prince's huge catalog of songs, there was no reason he couldn't have played a better mix of familiar and not so familiar tunes. I bet the casual fans still would have gone home happy if he only played half the hits that he did last night. I would have loved to have heard songs from the newer albums, as well as stuff from The Gold Experience, Chaos and Disorder, Come, etc. One of the highlights of last night's show for me was The Gingerbread Man. A lot of people really liked it, including the casual fans, and although it was sort of like The Question of U, it was essentially a new song which I think is proof enough that not almost every song played needed to be a hit.

mmmhmmmm

lol It always amazes me that people who weren't at a particular show, always have to b*tch and whine like they were there, and think the show they were "not at" mind you, was performed specifically with them in mind. The poster you replied to wasn't there, so reading a setlist from a piece of paper could never define or confirm how well a performance is. When will some fans "get that?"lol All I have to say is that Prince "owned " NYC with that show last night. I'm so glad, those who weren't there and complaining about a show they never attended, just by reading the setlist, and not "witnessing" the actual performance, well, I'd like to thank those those folks for not being there, because last night's show was awesome headbang without you.lol

What more is Amazing, you could say from 1991 - 2010, this brother hasn't had few darn songs he could add to his set list that people would know or was a semi hit!!!! 19 years after "Cream" and hes playing the same ole tired songs! lol

take in2 consideration the business has drastically changed and when prince fought the system he was being blacklisted. does it mean that there were not strong songs during this period HELL 2 THE NAW there are true classics in there as well. from a business stand point as well, marketing is not prince's strong suit because he had warner bros 2 do that, since he got free he doesn't do his share but somehow albums like musicology due 2 the tour and how it was grandfathered in as counting 2ward the charts, 3121, lotusflow3r/mplsound all debuted either number one or number 2 on the charts. not everyone on the org and other fansites are just buying these albums. black sweat was in heavy video rotation and yet he doesn't play these batch of newer songs. don't tell me cause the crowd doesn't know them.

lol Well didn't he play songs from the 20Ten album during the European tour, since it was released there and not here? So I wouldn't say he hasn't played any new songs within the past year. He's played "LayDown, Black Muse and Welcome2America", so he has played songs from his current album during this particular concert series.. How do we know if he's planning on releasing some of the 20ten songs with other tracks included, within the U.S.? That's just it, we don't know, until we get that news from the source himself.

In the meantime, fans from "all over the world" will be pitching in their 7 cents and change, about what he could've played, why he played certain songs, why he doesn't retire some, why he doesn't play certain songs, and so on and so on. Now imagine if he did what everyone wanted, which in reality is impossible for an artist to please all fans. I guarantee many fans will still complain and have many inquiries, requests, etc., for him to play or retire some of his songs.

How do any of us know that he doesn't plan on playing some of these "new batch of songs" particularly from the 20Ten album in future performances in the U.S.? According to the tour book, the songs for this particular concert series are already listed, although a few were not mentioned in the book that has been performed in the previous W2A shows. Someone fans are requesting songs like "Joy in Repetition" and I remember him playing that song during the 3121 Vegas shows. I remember him playing "Empty Room" at the Empire Club in 2006 as well and "Don't Play Me", tracks that are rarely played at his shows. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he pulls some rare tracks out of his catalogue in the near future. Just my 2 cents. shrug

my review:

i was disappointed that the first act were my boys mint condition cause i really like this group and their energy. stokley playing the drums was a highlight!! and when they started singing u send me swinging i was hyped!!! pretty brown eyes bow

i am not a fan of janelle and from her performance last night i won't be either. she is a visual artist and even discussing with the gentleman i was sitting next to during her set, he even felt she was disconnecting from her audience due 2 the screens not being clear 2 see her. the sound issues during her set also left a lot 2 desire, perhaps too much reverb in the mix and echo caused this cause i couldn't understand one word she was singing.

now as 4 prince:

i was at the december 18th show, i have listened to so many of his concerts and even tho i was never there, there is the music side of prince that is unmistakable cause really it's the music that gets ur body moving and toes tapping, so all arguments of "your not there u don't know what ur talking about etc" are plain garbage. cause now i have seen this tour twice and can truly say, causal fans CRACK ME UP!! twice now i have sat in sections when prince did songs and they didn't know shit!! how the hell can u sit during uptown, let's work, and even tho i don't appreciate prince doing time songs (morris day and the time don't do computer blue now do they?) it goes 2 show that the casual fan only knows 2 albums by prince and one song from around the world in a day. this is what his long term fans are paying 4?

starting with the beautiful ones and every show so far contains this song mostly do 2 misty copeland and going through the same old lgc etc was interesting in seeing how the crowd reacts caus it's like all they know. I REALLY THOGUHT PRINCE WOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE DEATH OF TEENA MARIE AND I WAS CORRECT THO HOPING HE WOULD ALLOW THE LADIES AND IDA 2 JAM ON SQUARE BIZ WOULD HAVE BEEN A TREAT AND A HALF! but i loved the dedication 2 her after uptown. hearing she's always in my hair was cool and so was if i was your girlfriend but having janelle pop up during that song ..smh!! she didn't know the song at all and i could tell that prince was hoping she would have busted in2 the second verse hence he grabbed the mic back.

something was off about prince and crew tho if one would compare it to the 18th show and others accounts of the jersey shows. he wasn't dancing like crazy this time around and the band wasn't as tight as previously. shelby, elisa and liv weren't as interactive as well, maybe because of the setlist material who knows but it was just off somehow. even the lighting of the stage wasn't popping as i have seen it b4. speaking of setlist material.. WHERE WAS THE FUNK? pretty much all the songs done last night were pop hits. i was waiting 4 that kick me upside my head moment that never came. maybe this was due 2 some speculation that Egypt was going 2 do when doves cry or just based from the songs in the back of the tour book that still have yet 2 be played but that could be saved for the 18th. and the comments about "it cracks me up that those complain about the shows and how it's crazy 2 think prince is playing just 4 u" well as a consumer do u not have the right 2 state if u enjoyed something or dislike something? a friend of mine pointed out this true fact about another major artist of our time, they did arena shows and showcased material of their latest project 2 the masses and has lesser cataloge material than prince, so why can't prince do the same and bring forth his more "leeser known material" 2 the general public? it's called BUSINESS SENSE!! where has that prince gone that took charge and played what he wanted 2 and not cater 2 the system?

in also hearing about the jersey shows that prince has played past 11 pm and even prince commented about the crazy curfew, i am hoping now that on the 18th there is no opening act so that he can do a 2 hour plus show.

another concern of mine is prince's use of a telepromter and what is baffling 2 me. he's done these songs so many times, why the need 4 the lyrics 2 be beamed onto his piano during the piano medley i don't understand why. if they contained lyrics 2 songs he doesn't do enough of then i can understand.

highlights 4 me wasn't so much about the show but really it was about seeing people i haven't seen since the xenophobia celebration. and how we wore the one night alone shirts unconciously. the friends i have come 2 know and hang out with b4 and after the show ..wow u guys are awesome!!!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Anyone know who did the guitar solo during SAIMH it looked like Andre 3000 [Edited 12/30/10 6:31am]

That was Kellindo Parker who is Janelle Monae guitarist... he's also the nephew of Maceo Parker.

take in2 consideration the business has drastically changed and when prince fought the system he was being blacklisted. does it mean that there were not strong songs during this period HELL 2 THE NAW there are true classics in there as well. from a business stand point as well, marketing is not prince's strong suit because he had warner bros 2 do that, since he got free he doesn't do his share but somehow albums like musicology due 2 the tour and how it was grandfathered in as counting 2ward the charts, 3121, lotusflow3r/mplsound all debuted either number one or number 2 on the charts. not everyone on the org and other fansites are just buying these albums. black sweat was in heavy video rotation and yet he doesn't play these batch of newer songs. don't tell me cause the crowd doesn't know them.

lol Well didn't he play songs from the 20Ten album during the European tour, since it was released there and not here?

Just my 2 cents. shrug

but not on a consistant basis did he do any songs from 20ten. truly look at his tours and shows over the years compared 2 how prince used 2 do things. a tour like diamonds and pearls featured material heavily from that album with a sprinkling of hits. a tour named welcome 2 america and hardly no new material is kind of senseless. yes the future if there is one cause sinbad said this is the last time we'll see this and whispers in the wind of a possilbe retirement could be true, the nostalgia factor is setting in.

lol I pretty much made that comment about "If a fan isn't at the show, how can they judge a show they were never at?".lol I look at it this way, no artist will ever please every, single fan, that's not even a reality. Every experience will be "different" for each fan, so there will never be one "collective agreement or opinion"lol Then again, each fan has their own "expectations" of an artist at a concert, but good luck with thinking Prince can please every fan, at every show, because that's never going to happen. I respect your "difference of opinion", but like I said, it is apparent each and every one of us have our own expectations of an artist's performance.

I do have to agree with you that the way in which the vids was shown during Janelle's performance, pretty much took away a chance for the audience to see her "actual performance", that was the only out of two dsappointments druing her performance. The other was that her vocals at certain points during her performance was drowned out by the music, but other than that, her vocals did project across the arena, for some of her songs. I thought "Smile" was not exactly the right song for that show last night though. In any event, I still enjoyed having a chance to see Janelle perform.

Now "Mint Condition" - couldn't get into them much. The band overpowered the singer's vocals, but they did have a lot of energy and would have been better off playing in a smaller venue, as I think they would have been appreciated more, connected with their audience. I was iimpressed by the guitar player's performance though.

At the IZOD Center, some fans stated he did "Laydown" and I believe "Black Muse". He did play W2A at the MSG 12/18, show, but because it wsa more of a spoken word track, fans at the show could not "speak along" with that track. Also, there is no album named "Welcome2America" L4, so quite frankly, he could pretty much play any song during this concert series. I'm still waiting to here what this "Black Muse" I keep hearing about, is all about. Seems quite the mystery.
