27 story block of flats in London is on fire.

This is a terrible unfolding tragedy.

I hope as many people as possible got out but it started at 1AM

Fire engulfs Grenfell tower block in west London

Images show the fire spreading to all floors
A huge fire has engulfed a tower block in Latimer Road, west London, with eyewitnesses claiming people are trapped in their homes.

The fire at Grenfell Tower on the Lancaster West Estate was reported at 01:16 BST and about 200 firefighters are tackling the blaze.

The Met Police said people were being treated for "a range of injuries".

The BBC's Andy Moore said the whole tower block was alight and there are fears the building might collapse.

At about 04:00 BST police said: "Residents continue to be evacuated from the tower block."

London Fire Brigade sent 40 fire engines to the tower.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said a "major incident" had been declared at Grenfell Tower.

Eyewitnesses said they could see lights - thought to be torches - flashing at the top of the block of flats, which people say is "close to burning through".

Our correspondent added: "We've seen debris falling from the building, we've heard explosions, we've heard the sound of glass breaking.

"The police keep pushing back their cordons, pushing back members of the public for fear the building might collapse."

The BBC's Simon Lederman said the tower could be seen burning "from miles away".

'Covered in ash'

He said the building was "burning out of control", from the tenth floor onwards.

London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Dan Daly said firefighters are "working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire".

"This is a large and very serious incident and we have deployed numerous resources and specialist appliances."

London Ambulance Service medics specially trained in life-saving medical care in hazardous environments have also been sent to the fire.

Police say a number of people are being treated for a range of injuries
One eyewitness, George Clarke, the presenter of Channel 4 TV programme Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live: "I'm getting covered in ash, that's how bad it is.

"I'm 100 metres away and I'm absolutely covered in ash.

"It's so heartbreaking, I've seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can't get out."

'Building crumbling'

Tim Downie, another eyewitness, told the BBC part of the building was "completely burned away".

"It has burned through to its very core," he said.

"It looks very bad, very very bad. I've never seen anything like this. It's just such a big fire.

"The whole building is just crumbling. It's just billowing black smoke."

Sophia, who is about 500m away from the building, said: "There are lots of people gathered in the street. I just see more and more flames burning and tragically I hear people crying for help.

"The entire building is burning through."

It seems that it started one side before spreading so I'm hoping most got out. However they will have lost everything. The sad thing is that most tower blocks in Britain have been demolished for exactly this reason but London is so dense and heavily populated that they have been allowed to stay. Props to the firefighters who have been working flat out to control it and again, hopefully most will have got out safely.

Okay, so I've just seen an update and it seems people are trapped. Horrible.

Horrible news to wake up to. Police have confirmed that 12 people have died so far, they fully expect that number to rise as firefighters have now entered the recovery stage.

It's almost 10.30pm here and BBC live footage shows that there are still pockets of fire burning on several floors.

One amazing story is of a desperate woman who dropped her baby from the 9th floor of the block and it was miraculously caught by people on the ground outside. The woman has not been seen since.

Witnesses describe seeing death on the faces of people shouting for help.

Awful.

but angry residents said they had warned local authorities about fire issues at Grenfell Tower. The subsidized housing block of 120 apartments was built in 1974 and was recently upgraded at a cost of 8.6 million pounds ($11 million), with work finishing in May 2016, according to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The Grenfell Action Group, a community organization formed to oppose a nearby redevelopment project, has been warning about the risk of fire at Grenfell Tower since 2013. The group has raised concerns about testing and maintenance of firefighting equipment and blocked emergency access to the site.

"All our warnings fell on deaf ears and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time," the group said after the fire broke out.

No - it seems it started with an exploding fridge. The fire spread so quickly many didn't stand a chance, plus they were given information to stay in their flats in the case of fire. Many muslims who were awake were instrumental in waking others and saving lives.

I agree. This block had recently had a 10 million pound regeneration. It seems unbelievable that part of that was not installing a sprinkler system. However, it seems that the fire alarm may not even have gone off. Warnings and worries about what would happen in the event of a fire had been made and sadly, yet again, it is only when the worst happens that changes come about.

It will be interesting to see the outcome of an inquest. There should be no excuse as to unchecked equipment or blocked fire exits. I listened to someone from Kensington council yesterday saying that they had plenty of money and would be trying to rehouse the families ASAP. If they had the money they can't even use that as an excuse, especially after the refurbishment.

Well nope. Everybody helped from all cultures. Some muslims came and helped from other cities bringing food and clothing.

I'm sorry but the building in London didn't have a big metal flying object full of jet fuel slam into it. You must add that into your physics equation or your math will be wrong.

This is a tragedy for the people involved and the wider London community. If the opportunistic 9/11 "truthers" could fuck off and start yet another thread about the topic should their psychosis demand to be heard yet again, that would be respectful and most appreciated.
