This is a tragedy for the people involved and the wider London community. If the opportunistic 9/11 "truthers" could fuck off and start yet another thread about the topic should their psychosis demand to be heard yet again, that would be respectful and most appreciated.

I agree. Some horrible stories coming out about how people tried to make parachutes from bin-bags and bedding. How they dropped their children in the hope they would live. The council have a lot to answer for. This should not have been able to happen. Also it seems there is a lot of anger from the local charities who have collected a whole heap of clothing, bedding and furniture but who have nowhere or no-one to currently give it to. They need a co-ordinated response set up from the council and they are not getting it. I fear people will be very angry at how preventable this all was.

Feels like another Hillsborough situation in that everyone will pass the buck and it will be a long time before there's any justice.

I'm not sure what justice for this looks like - manslaughter/murder charges? I seriously doubt we'll get that. Someone accepting blame? Nah - I can't see it. I'm guessing that the inquiry will suggest that a number of coincedental factors came together to form a lethal fire, thereby spreading the blame thinly enough to avoid anyone getting in any serious shit.

There was an excellent piece on radio 4 today at 5pm regarding previous fires in old blocks of flats and the recommendations made. Sadly though many lives had been lost before, all of the inquiries gave recommendations which councils have ignored. What is the point of an inquiry if it doesn't lead to change?

I've no idea. Why?

Playing identity politics with the still burning embers of young families.

A new low even for you.

Absolute tragedy. I really feel for the people who had to go through that hellish nightmare. Hopefully there will be accountability for the incompetence that led to the fire advancing as fast as it did.

And as for Freaky's comment(#32). I think a big majority of the people who lived in the building were Muslims.

Looking at the pictures of the missing and seeing those who survived there was a diverse mix of race, culture and religion living in the block. Muslims were instrumental in saving lives as they were awake eating because of Ramadan when most were sleeping. Again, this is yet another event which shows Britain is not divided.

The prime minister has avoided meeting the survivors, choosing only to meet the emergency workers. She is being battered by the press for it and rightly so. Show some compassion Mrs May; I'm sure you must have at least one cell somewhere in your body.

Shocking. I bet if it happened a week earlier, she'd be out there hugging survivors.

It just proves she is not interested in real people.

She couldn't be arsed to campaign so my guess is that she wouldn't have bothered either. I am no Tory supporter (really, really not) but I used to respect her. In the last two months she has shown that she's as much of a spineless waste of space as her predecessor was...

Even the Queen is humble enough to actually go and speak to the people from this tragedy. She also visted the injured children of the Manchester area attack more than Mrs May would do.

She went last night to see some survivors after media pressure and then probably wondered why she got booed and jeered. She promised money yet the council have said that what they need isn't money but a coordinated person who can work out the logistics of getting the clothes, food and furniture to those that need it. What they also needed was for someone to listen to the ghosts of previous high rise fires whose inquests led to recommendations which were ignored.

She really needs to go. I find it hard to believe that she doesn't want to go. At least Cameron knew what was the right thing to do.

I will fix what i said she ain't humble then, i did not know she was pushed into going. I just try to see the good in all people.

My bad. I meant Theresa May bowed to pressure not the queen. I should have used her name instead of the pronoun. The Queen was humble enough to speak to the victims, seemingly without being pressured to do so. No need for you to edit anything.

In my humble opinion it's irresponsible to compare the Twin Tower collapse to a 27 story apartment building. . wink Totally different circumstances... for which we still don't know how the Grenfell Tower caught ablaze. Good gief.

Be that as it may....

As always, follow the money. https://www.theguardian.c...ire-safety

Its being reported that the plastic cladding -which is banned in the US and elsewhere in Europe- was also banned in the UK. Laws and regulations are only make a difference if they are enforced. Regulations are only enforced when there's due diligence. When over-site has the power to bring criminal / legal action when regulations are not followed. .. then we tend to see less of these types of tragedies.

These days we here a lot of talk about removing or weakening laws, regulations, and rules so that business can be more nimble, supposedly increase employment, and contribute to the national treasure. It appears the weakening or removing of safeguards only contribute to lining the pockets of the corporate executive branch and shareholders.

lol lol lol lol lol lol

yeah cause i'm sure that if the towers colapsed from the heat of jet fuel over halfway up the buildins

this little apartment buildin should have surely fallen, and although the towers fell in less than two hours, they had... 'survivors' that were ready for interview... yoooooou knooooow, days later...

apparently they are hard to find in london...
