Idris Elba Returns as John Luther

December 02, 2015

Idris Elba is back as tormented genius DCI John Luther.

The London detective, whose brilliant mind is often in conflict with the dangerous violence of his passions, returns in two new one-hour episodes which have been given confirmed air dates.

On BBC One in the UK, the special kicks off December 15, and on BBC America in the States, it will air on December 17.

Awesome!

2 one hour episodes. Funny how the BBC seasons are but I guess that works perfect for a movie actor. I kind of wish some American shows would do the same, forcing 13 to 24 episodes may be too much for some shows which would be very good if they were shortened to 5 or 6 episodes a season. It would annoying but we'd get some seriously quality viewing without all the fluff.

I may just have to get into Luther. House of Cards and Game of Thrones brought into the modern tv era of binge watching, so I'm in wait mode for both of those shows, Luther looks like it might be the perfect show to tide me over, how many seasons have there been?

So far, there have been three seasons of Luther, beginning in 2010.

ok, i'm in season two and a bit lost. apparently 6 episodes comprise a full season or something? i just noticed that i was on like episode 8 or 9 but it was already "season 2". so the hooker's mom and those others (including the one the hooker's daughter killed) had WHAT exactly on Luther?! that was not set up well or i missed an episode or two! even though i'm watching them "in sequence." Help!

yep. luther was the copper who took down jenny's father.

.

because he killed jenny's dad, luther's conscience is the hold that jenny and her mum have over him. luther had no obligation to rescue jenny from the vile clutches of the madame, but he felt compassion for her and did so anyway.

.

that's why his character is so fascinating, imo. he is rude, crude and rule breaking, yet adheres to his own strict internal code of ethics, even when the police dept is corrupt. alice is luther's perfect complement, as she adheres mostly only to her own brilliant, but amoral impulses.

.

anyway, it all starts when jenny's mum appeals to luther to find her missing daughter jenny and luther busts up the porno shoot where he finds daughter jenny starring.

.

when luther carries jenny out of the porno shoot, he essentially 'steals' her from the madame who owns her and has masterminded the porno movie. this is the 'debt' that luther owes the madame.

.

when the madame's son tracks jenny down at luther's apartment and jenny kills him in self defense the madame and her henchmen also have this over luther (again, it's jenny's fault the madame's son died, but luther honorably takes this on himself).

.

however, the madame does not know exactly how her son died. will she find out? mayyyybe. smile

.

wait and see how sly luther is about dealing with the body......

ps: i watch this show with the captions on, since the british accent sometimes throws me a curve

ok, so this is where i'm lost. i need to see if i missed a whole episode. because it went from the serial killer who sniffed the handbags of the victims right into this next backstory the following episode. i know HE wasn't jenny's dad, nor was the serial killer at the beginning of the season.

Luther Series 4: Trailer, Synopsis, Premiere Details

News Rob Leane

.
.

On BBC America, Luther series 4 will air as a three-hour special on Thursday the 17th of December. We’ve also got a new synopsis…

.

UPDATED:

Now we have the trailer for Luther series 4:

Our original story from earlier this month follows...

.

Luther series 4 comes hotly anticipated, not least for bringing Idris Elba back to the small screen. Today, a brand new synopsis has been released, and we’ve also got some casting news and clues about how the series might be broadcast.

For starters, here’s the synopsis…

“This time we find Luther on a leave of absence from the police force, laying low in a rundown cottage. A visit from colleagues, Detective Chief Inspector Theo Bloom (Darren Boyd, Veep, The World’s End) and Detective Sergeant Emma Lane (Rose Leslie, The Last Witch Hunter, Game of Thrones) brings a shocking piece of news that draws him back to London in search of the truth. At the same time, a gruesome cannibalistic serial killer has struck the city, eating body parts as he goes.

“With a trail of clues leading from one crime scene to the next, Detective Superintendent Unit Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley, Babel, Bleak House) and his team must work out the twisted logic that connects each victim. But this murdering mastermind is more than a match for Schenk’s police, outsmarting them at every step. It’s not long before Luther makes his triumphant return to the Bullpen, determined to capture the killer before another mutilated body joins the mounting pile. But he’s dogged at every turn by ghosts from his past. Isolated and volatile, it will take every fiber of Luther’s being to keep it together.

“Written and created by Emmy-nominated Neil Cross and directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed, Fortitude) the Luther special also stars Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ripper Street, Da Vinci’s Demons)as Megan Cantor, a mysterious woman from Luther’s past, John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Ripper Street) as the sadistic cannibal Steven Rose, Patrick Malahide (Indian Summers, Game of Thrones) as George Cornelius, an old school gangster, and Michael Smiley (Doctor Who, Ripper Street) returning as computer whiz Benny Silver.”

You’ll notice a few new names in that list of cast members. Of particular note is Rose Leslie, who played Ygritte in Game Of Thrones and currently stars alongside Vin Diesel in The Last Witch Hunter.

As for how the show will be broadcast, we’re hearing that BBC America will screen Luther series 4 as a three-hour special on Thursday the 17th of December. We await details of how the series will be screened for British audiences.

More as we hear it.

we never get to meet jenny's dad, and yes at times the show seems to jump around. most of the weird bits fit in eventually

i get that loose ends won't always be tied up neatly, but this piece of writing was a MAJOR faux pas, it literally had me thinking i'd missed a whole episode or two, that's pretty bad. still enjoying the series though

Chiwetel Ejiofor doesn't have enough swagger required to be Bond. Idris is the better choice.
