Funkcreep, you only need to look at a sunset to see that your model
Is impossible. And here's why.

The sun visibly dissapears below the horizon.
It does not appear a third of the size it was at midday (which it would in your model)
We still see it as a circle which means it's not a flat spotlight or its perspective to us late in the day would be dim and oval
Shaped.

So how could what we observe at sunset work
With a flat earth?
Well it would need to be a sphere. Much further away than you claim and it would need to pass below the plane of the earth and go under our flat planet BUT we know that doesn't work either due to it always being daytime somewhere.

It's a cute model and it makes a good attempt at explaining some things but it creates too many problems that make the model fail absolutely including but not limited too....

1)what I said above
2)13 hour flights from Auckland to Argentina.

These both prove the model impossible but are consistent with and proof of a
global earth

Sorry.

More evidence for a flat earth:

If Earth were a spinning ball heated by a Sun 93 million miles away, it would be impossible to have simultaneously sweltering summers in Africa while just a few thousand miles away bone-chilling frozen Arctic/Antarctic winters experiencing little to no heat from the Sun whatsoever. If the heat from the Sun traveled 93,000,000 miles to the Sahara desert, it is absurd to assert that another 4,000 miles (0.00004%) further to Antarctica would completely negate such sweltering heat resulting in such drastic differences.

Here's the thing, if you had the wherewithal to stop and think about things for a brief moment, you would realise that many of your "proofs" actually debunk themselves. You see, the reasons for variable climates on our planet are BECAUSE the world is round. Please google why the poles are cold. You will learn about many things, but primarily you will learn about the density of our atmosphere, refraction and how light behaves when it is confronted with denser medium than space which happens to be spherical.

Now lets expand on your argument. If its nonsensical that the poles would be so much colder, can you explain how it is more sensible to propose that a flat earth that is freezing at the edges, hotter in an inner ring and then freezing again in the centre makes more sense? You cant use a fundamental lack of understanding of physics to debunk something without following up with a better proposition. So please tell us how a flat earth climate works. Also, whilst your at it, how do the seasons change on a flat earth? What's the science there?

The same can be said about your lighthouse problem. Use google just for a second and learn about optical anomalies and what causes them. You will find your answers. You see, if the answer was because the earth was flat then you would be able to not just see a light house from 50 miles, but you would be able to see the statue of liberty from the west coast of Ireland with a good telescope. But you cant... Why is that? You cant have a lighthouse as proof without extending your logic to a larger scale and proving it works at all levels. Why is it on a clear night in the middle of the ocean you can see stars throughout the sky right down to the horizon, yet there is no land or ice wall to be seen? There is nothing blocking the starlight from meeting the horizon. There is no silhouette in front of a setting moon that implies land or ice cliffs on the distant horizon. Nothing. Nada. Why is that?

Your grasp of basic common sense and fundamental science taught in school is worrying. You shouldn't be allowed access to the www without supervision. The org is relatively safe, but there are some nasty places out there that might take advantage of your short comings. I would run it by your grown up helper before you go elsewhere if I were you. But you know all that really don't you :thumbs up:

.

The problem is that this requires a command of optics and also geometry that is - I'm very honest here - beyond my personal command of physics and mathematics. That does not mean though that it is not possible to explain any of these phenomena, it simply means that I personally am not able to do these calculations. Any person with a university major degree in physics could do it though.

.

The problem is that you would then be totally unable to evaluate these explanations, because your personal command of physics is even below the level of proper school education (sorry if I'm getting a bit personal here, but one should be honest with you). It's as if you were unable to play a children's tune on the piano, but expect someone to teach you how to play a Beethoven sonata or a Brahms concerto.

.

So, just keep it simple in the interest of this discussion. Don't go to spherical trigonometry, just estimate the time of a flight or google a bit about Messner and Fuchs. It's much easier to do, and it proves your flat earth model to be nonsense in just a few minutes.

[Edited 8/30/15 11:53am]

"that does not mean though that it is not possible to explain any of these phenomena"...see my point? Instead of saying "you made a good point, based on accepted curvature that the earth should have, the light house example proves that to be BS..there is no curvature" You make it a point to find somebody to explain it away. You will NOT accept any evidence that goes against your beliefs...no matter how valid they are.

Your comments on my lack of education etc... is bordering on condescending. This coming a from a peson who was spoon fed to believe all these craziness about a spinning globe and how we're traveling through space at 67,000 miles per hour. If you were taught growing up that the earth was stationary and the sun revolved around the earth, you would have accepted it, mostly by your observation and intelligence. Then if somebody came and told you, hey, thats all wrong, we are not stationary, we are in fact moving up to 1000mph at the equator and the earth is being hurled through space at 67,000 miles per hour, you would say "your crazy"! You were spoon fed and you ate it up, just like we all did. Have some humbleness and look at the evidence, there is no curvature, the horizon ALWAYS rises up to eye level etc....

By proving that Messner and Fuchs went to Antartica doesnt disporove the mountain of evidence proving a flat earth. Ok..two guys go up to Antartica, hmm...so now that makes the lack of curvature on the earth a moot point. I don't think so. You have a mountain of evidence showing the flat earth but your just too proudful to admit to it.

The Statue of Liberty in New York stands 326 feet above sea level and on a clear day can be seen as far as 60 miles away. If the Earth was a globe, that would put Lady Liberty at an impossible 2,074 feet below the horizon!

The reason you can't see the Statue of Liberty from an infinite distance is from the effect of pespective.

Here is proof that a straight pole is bent: Stand next to a swimming pool and put a 10 foot pole half way into the water. You can very clearly see that the pole bends where the water line is. Please, funkcreep, tell me why this is so.

No, they're simply realistic, I'm afraid. You do not understand very basic and principle mechanics, you don't understand gravity, you are unable to make a simple estimation of distance on your flat earth model (which proves its fundamental flaws within seconds) etc. Your command of physics is significantly below the knowledge of a teenage schoolkid. That's the simple truth, and that's as well the end of my personal participation in this unusual, somehow funny, but also somehow scary thread. I've got better things to do.

The reason you can't see the Statue of Liberty from an infinite distance is from the effect of pespective.

But I have a telescope that clearly sees the rings of Saturn millions of miles away. Why when I point it over the ocean on a clear day, all I see is a crisp, clear horizon meeting blue sky. No ice cliffs, no land, no lighthouses. Nothing. I do, however, see ships disappearing slowly as they move away. Not getting infinitely smaller until they vanish though, but they appear to be sinking as if they were.... Wait for it..... Disappearing over the horizon!

Now, can you explain the weird climates of your flat earth? Why is it freezing at the edges and the centre with a more temperate "goldilocks" zone between them? What strange phenomenon causes this pray tell? Is your sun swinging on a pendulum in a circular motion above the earth? This cant be so can it? We see the sun drop below the edge of the world every day don't we? Why is it at the north of somewhere like Sweden the sun shines for 20 hours a day in summer and moves from east to west in a pronounced southerly arc? Yet in winter only shines for a few hours a day? And in Kenya the sun moves from east to west in a straight line directly overhead? Why is this do you think? Please let me know. But not before explaining how your climate works on a flat earth. I'm intrigued to know how you get that temperate zone works between two cold bits. Thanks.

I've watched a couple of YouTube vids about this (I know, I know) and I gotta say, I've got a bruised forehead. The level of scientific illiteracy displayed is astounding.

One chap showed a video on a beach. Nothing on the horizon until he impressively zoomed in a long way and made visible some far off high rise towers. I don't know where it was so some island or he was on an island, doesn't matter. He comtunuinly asserted with total confidence that the image was proof of a flat earth as the toweres appeared vertical and not leaning over. "THERE IS NO CURVATURE, THEY ARE VERTICAL" "THEY ARE NOT LEANING OVER" (sound familiar?)

So what is he expecting? A high rise tower zoomed into that is many miles away would, from such a viewers perspective, visibly lean backwards!? Wtf? So the top is undoubtedly a few feet max further away at the top than it is at the bottom (from the viewers perspective) and you'd somehow be able to perceive that head on from many miles away? Utterly absurd.

Now, here's the rub and maybe what took the clip from simple idiocy to something more disturbing. All the while he's asserting "THERE IS NO CURVATURE" the elephant in the room. That very video shows just the top of the buildings. The bases and any other land feature are below the horizon. They appear to rise up from underwater. Whilst he's labouring on a nonsensical assertion his own evidence is far more profoundly debunking his own position.

And that one clip was a microcosm for the last 18 pages of this thread. The flat earth model presented and the extrapolations you can draw from it alone is enough to debunk the entire theory and prove a global earth. No need for NASA composites or anything else.

I will look more closely at the flights from Syndey to Santiago. I will look at the closely today.

Your right, I havent looked at the Messner-Fuchs antartica expedition in 1989-1990. I need to do that as well.

So your right, I do need to look at both those issues. I'll admit that, but I wish the people in here would give my evidence the same consideration.

MANY people have given your 'evidence' consideration. It's been considered, and considered faulty. Repeatedly. Ad nauseum. NOTHING in reality tells one that this planet is flat. Whoever raised you and/or educated you needs to be embarrassed. If its all fun and games, then fine. But if you're being serious in your belief that the planet is flat...go hide away somewhere untill u can work it out. Or either just shut up about it. No one, at this point, should need to explain any of these things further than they already have. Somethings deficient. And I am not going to say its the US educational system in general. It's been able to let MANY a dumbass know the world is spherical.

Dude....the earth us HUUUUUGE. Which means the curvature us VERY slight to the perceptable eye.

A lighthouse is 100bfeet high and u can still see it 50 miles out.

I don't know the exact figures and i refuse to research it for you...all this info is avail in prerefuseigures. But back to the 100 ft/50 miles. The curve of the sphere of the earth is slight enough so that after traveling 50 miles, the curve hasn't dipped more that 100 feet, leaving the lights of the lighthouse still visible.

There was a vid several pages back that explains this more precisely. There's a bridge near new York or something. A suspension bridge. Built with two towers. The center of the base of ine pilon is exactly 3miles from the other pilon. The top of the towers that holds the bridge ...the center of those two towers line up to be exactly 3 miles + 2" or some bullshit....I don't remember the exact figure....its prolly even less than that. But the tops are further apart than the bottoms because the earth curves eeeeever so slightly...spreading the tops just barely further apart than the bottoms. If the earth was flat, those two distances would be the same...but the earth's curved so they're different...the top is further apart.

Hold your hand out flat and take two toothpicks and pinch them between your middle and ring fingers...one near the tip of the fingers and one near your palm. Make sure both toothpicks are standing straight up, perpendicular to your fingers. Hold your hand flat...the two toothpicks are parallel. Now curve your fingers like your palming a basketball... Note the tops of the toothpicks are now further apart from each other than the bottom of the toothpicks that are between your fingers. This demonstrates the bridge bit in a perceptable(viewable, understandable) fashion, or manner.

Edit....even if you go to Kansas...the flaaaaatest state...and look off in the horizon...your eyes aren't strong enough to see this curve. The earth is so huge, its essentially imperceptible. Maybe a professional could tell and point it out...but, really...u can't tell.

And no....it doesn't take loads of high end technology to know this. Egyptians knew and them bitches slept on rocks. One can work out the shape of the earth and what movements its neighbors make by carefully observing the movements of the easily viewable stars. These people had ASSLOADS of time and NOTHING to look at end entertain themselves with but the stars...and campfire stories...hence Greek and Roman mythology....all of which were elaborate stories demonstrating the movements of stars and our relationship with them. They had it all correct without even a set of binoculars.

That's not the best example. Yes, he'd have seen the curvature but the balloon mounted camera at the start is curved to fit more in the frame. He wasn't that high as to see such an extreme curvature. That's quite clear from the amount of featureless desert that fills the image.

If the Earth was flat, and the sun was only right around the corner, we'd all have the same temperature, all the time. But we don't. It's hot in Australia when it's snowing in Colorado. Impossible if we're all on the same plane, getting our heat from the same, nearby source.

It takes 24 hours for the Earth to make a complete revolution. The sun is a sphere that emantes light and heat from all sides, so it doesn't matter if or how much the sun is spinning. Therefore, it doesn't matter where the Earth is relative to its circumnavigation of the sun. 3 PM will always occur at the same time relative to the Earth's exposure to the sun.
