i watched the champions league final last night and that is the end of the football season for me,

judging by the response to your post there isnt much interest in womens football,of course the bbc

will be giving it plenty of coverage otherwise they would be accused of sexism, theres no doubt that

these ladies are very good but it just hasnt taken-off with the public.

Perhaps you're correct.

Frankly, I'd expect that sort of thing out of the U.S. Yet while I'd imagine women's football does not enjoy the same support as men's elsewhere in the world, it will be educational to me to see the exact extent to which that's true over the next month.

USA! USA! USA!

That's who I'm rooting for, any way. Can't wait to settle in front of the TV. I only got to watch a little of the Canada-China match yesterday, but planning to catch as many matches as I can.

I almost bought tix but decided since it was going to be on tv that I would just stay home and watch rather than make my way to the stadium from my home for the Canada v. China game, plus it was a hot day as well.

I'd have loved to catch a match or two, but there will be no games here in Toronto, unfortunately. We'll have our hands full with the Pan Am games later this summer.

I suppose I could do the relatively short drive for a Montreal or Ottawa game, but I should be saving my $$$ for travel I've got planned in August.

I'll watch it. We also have the Under 20 mens world cup going on now in New Zealand. I went to the opener and have tickets to the quarter final. A few years ago we had the under 16 womens world cup here and it was really big. The stadium sold out for the final. (only 25thousand capacity though) Women's sport has a good following down here relative to elsewhere it seems. Our netball team are all well known. Can't stand netball myself though.

I'm rambling. Bye.

You should have gone to the game. You would have enjoyed it immensely. woot!

I remember the 1994 World Cup that was held here in the USA, and while I am a general fan of soccer, I wasn't nearly as much of a fan back then as I am now. But having some eastern European co-workers who really wanted to go the games in Chicago, I went along and bought a ticket to see Germany vs. Spain. I had a blast at that game. The crowd was electric, and the respective fans of the countries playing were so rabid they got everyone else excited. excited The game ended in a 1-1 draw though.

During the 2006 World Cup games, I worked with a young Italian American woman, who was nuts for the Italian team. I couldn't have cared less about soccer then, but my colleague's joy at her team's success became an amazing joy for me to witness through the tournament. I don't think I watched a single game, but I found myself also rooting for Italy. lol

By the 2010 games, I'd moved to Toronto, the demographic of which is pretty much representative of every country on earth. Seems everyone was flying the flag of their favourite national team... on their cars; on their homes; some even, painted, on their faces. I committed to watch a match or two, and I was almost immediately hooked.

The sport, despite its international governing body's gross shortcomings and a few awful fans here and there, really is a cool point of coming together. I hope the current FIFA sting serves as a catalyst to clean up the business of the game.

Germany could have scored 15 - 20 goals today if they'd really wanted to.

That was an absolute bloodbath. Germany missed a ton of opportunities to be sure, but I suspect at a certain point they felt downright piteous of Côte d'Ivoire.

It's not that I don't appreciate it for what it is but a very small city attempting to host a world class event like this is proving to be a logistical nightmare.

I'm sure the the stadium builders in Qatar (for the FIFA WC 2022) could totally relate to that.

Colombia got hosed on that red card but we know that only because of super-slow motion replays.

That's what Colombia gets though, for talking so much smack before the match. USA! USA! USA!
