In Howard The Duck (the comic book, not the movie), Cleveland is kinda described as a hell of a shithole, like the most ugly, depressing and boring city of the entire US (and IIRC writer Stever Gerber said he indeed put his story there because he felt that way about the city).

So seriously, since I've never been there, is Cleveland such a crappy place, or at least was it in the mid-70's when the comic was published? Or was it more of a personal grudge Gerber had against the city?

Lived in the area for years now back in Minneapolis. It was all that...dank, depressing...scary in spots...

After I moved they passed legislation to allow cassin's in the state and specifically in the cities. The popped up like mushrooms including a giant casino downtown I guess it has livened things up a bit. I will be there for NYE this year...we shall see!

I've been to both Baltimore & Cleveland several times, Cleveland doesn't have any section nearly as good as Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

The R&R Hall of Fame is fantastic, but if you ever do get there you'll need to prepare yourself - there was not even one single piece of Prince memorabilia there during the two times I visited.

The city and its surrounding area have suffered since the '70s from awful fiscal policy; steel and polymer manufacturing that has now gone largely offshore; an undervaluing and mismarketing of its cultural assets; and a social climate that has festered under an east vs. west, city vs. suburb, white vs. black (...ad infinitum) provinciality. So my experience of the city is, yeah, it has sucked for some time... so much so that I left in 2006.

I still own a home in the eastern 'burbs, I check up on my tenant and visit my family about once every other month. The strategy over the past 5 years has been to revitalize Cleveland's downtown core with casinos, swanky residential developments, and revitalized entertainment districts. Simultaneously, the city has afforded major incentives to its two competing world-class teaching hospitals to buy up large chunks of an otherwise abandoned midtown. These efforts seem to be resulting in a gradual return to life... so we'll see.

Hi, Lammastide!

I was borned and raised in Cleveland too, and I have to agree with the OP, it is a shithole. The economy still sux here (even though people keep claiming that it's improving). Personally, I don't see it, and all of the jobs that do become available seem to be either low paying, or part-time with no benefits. The only reason why I stay here is because my parents are still alive. My one brother used to live in Arizona, but moved back here several years ago, because he, "loves Cleveland!". Personally, I don't see what the attraction is, but to each their own, I guess. :\ The only good thing about Cleveland is a restaurant called Shooters in The Flats. It is right on Lake Erie, and you can watch the boats come and go on the water. The food is really good too. Other than that, Cleveland sux!

I wonder if anyone has ever asked Prince why that is the case? I'm not aware of any beef he may have with the Hall, and he obviously attended both George Clinton's induction as well as his own. Unless maybe he wants Paisley Park to be the "exclusive" site of his memorabilia? Either way it's a damn shame, they should have an entire section in the Rock Hall dedicated to Prince.

Yes, Shooters is still in existence. I think that's the ONLY restaurant in the Flats that HASN'T closed. My parents and I try to go there at least once during the summer (usually before an Indians game).

Yeah, I think that was the reason I was given when I asked a R & R Hall of Fame employee about why they didn't have any Prince stuff on display. I agree, they should have a display dedicated to Prince. Prince is such a control freak though, I would be surprised if that actually happened. It would be nice, though.
