Internet Set-up

Alrighty, I've been without the net well over a month.... good for nothing AT&T. So as of today, I've yanked all of their shit of our house and I'm going with the less of two evils Comcast. SMH

What is you setup what router and modem are you using.... anyone using VPN? Of course I'm not renting anything from these people I'm buying everything. What connection speed are you going with? Yeah set-up a home network is in order... that is if I can get SAMBA to work. Thanks need some tips and suggestions.

I'm surprised that you didn't get a good expenience with AT&T as an ISP. And just when I was concerning about jumping ship to that company.

At my place, my current ISP is Comcast since they have most of Arkansas covered. Their technicans are good. But the customer service reps at 1-800-Comcast are THE worst that I even had to deal with. And I used to think the reps at Cox Communications were bad in Louisiana.

I've been procrastinating for sometime to get rid of DSL, the modem or power pack dying was the push for me to upgrade. They all are a bunch of crooks and liars. Everyone I know has told me AT&T U-Verse is a hot-mess, and the speeds they are paying for, are well below there Mbps speed. Grant we've had bad storms but I called them weeks before the bad weather started and they slow walked me. There reps weren't much better, they are always trying push into one of there plans.

Netgear R7000 router & Motorola modem are on there way, need more security and speed for my network. Reading now to see if I can get Win 7 to work with SAMBA.

I can't help you on that last point since you know that I'm a Linux-user and I'm so removed from everything with a Microsoft Plantation.....oops, I mean Corporation. lurking lol

But I can tell you that if you're going to use VPN on your Linux computer, you better have Network Manager installed instead of Wicd because VPN capablilities are not available for Wicd. Be advised that Network Manager has a lot of dependences (mostly because it a GNOME application) before installing.

Yea, i'm still on masa' gates plantaion, i'm tryin my best to get off but i can't dammit! lol

Thanks, I forgot all about that. I think Bohdhi / Mint 17 uses Network Manger by default, I'll check again. I'm goin to try to use iTwin Connect (for my VPN) to see if it will work. It only works with iOS / PC but in theory as long as long as iTwin is connected to iOS / PC computer, I should be able to access info from all computers. I shall see..

You are a gamer; are you using Steam on our Linux Box? If so, how do you like it? Any tips about hardware or software? My set-up / how to'... will be on my youtube channel shortly. biggrin

I've never mess with Steam yet. I'm very happy with the freeware games Debian has already such as Freedoom, Openarena, Atomic Tanks, & GNOME games.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what Steam is?

Why can't you just install games as normal?

STEAM-WEBSIGHT

Steam
is an internet-based digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer, and social networking platform developed by Valve Corporation. Steam provides the user with installation and automatic updating of games on multiple computers, and community features such as friends lists and groups, cloud saving, and in-game voice and chat functionality. The software provides a freely available application programming interface (API) called Steamworks, which developers can use to integrate many of Steam's functions, including networking and matchmaking, in-game achievements, micro-transactions, and support for user-created content through Steam Workshop, into their products.

Steam as created for Microsoft but OS X and Linux software has since been written.

If I install it on a machine, will it detect the hardware of that machine (the capabilities of its 3D card and such), and allow me to install only the games that'll play on that machine?

As far as I know if you have a nVidia card you can play these games? I'm going to have to check with those of my friends who use Steam and possible have your specs. I'll almost certain you have to have a nVidia card but don't hold me to that.

You can use the same account on multiple computers. You will only to be able to have one computer logged into Steam at a time, though. There may be a way to avoid this, maybe offline mode.
