Reminds me of something that happened in Los Angeles not too long ago. Can't find the link, but here's how I remember the story:

Two boys were walking down the street when a pit bull got loose and attacked one boy. The other boy picked up a piece of the broken fence and bashed the dog over the head, saving his friend's life. It all happened so fast.

There was a newspaper reporter across the street who witnessed the whole thing and ran over to the hero boy. "I want to write your story!" he says and begins with the line "Los Angeles Dodgers Fan Saves Friend's Life" but the boy stopped him. "I'm not a Dodgers fan,' said the boy.

So the reporter starts over. He writes "Los Angeles Angels Fan Saves Friend's Life" but again the hero boy stops him. "I'm not an Angels fan, either," says the boy.

"Well, what team DO you follow?" asked the reporter. The boy replies "I love the Houston Astros!"

The reporter then writes, "Redneck Bastard Kills Beloved Family Pet".

I hope that cat doesn't get lost or something. Cats don't like to travel from place to place. When my friend brought her cats to my house when she was giving them to me, they ran and hid as soon as the cage door was opened. It took them a few days to get adjusted and finally come out of the closet.

The cat is probably relieved that this wasn't another visit to the vet's office. biggrin

Good. No rehabilitating that dog. I love dogs, but that one had to go.

Unless it's a neurological issue, every dog can be rehabilitated. Not many interested in spending the time and work it takes to do this, so easier to just kill it.

Is rehabilitation possible? I know this for a fact: If a dog ever attacked one of my children, there is no way in hell I'd ever let that dog within 250 feet of my child or any other child I cared about.

Or this: Is there any parent in the entire world that would buy a dog that had previously attacked a toddler or child without any kind of provocation? If someone had come to me and said, "Hey, this pit bull needs a home. Last year it attacked and mauled a child, but we rehabilitated it. Here's the Certificate of Rehabilitation. We think he'd be a great pet now for your small children. Interested?"

There's not a certificate in the world that would convince me to take that chance, and I bet there's not one that would convince anyone else with small children either.

That's probably why they put him down, no one's going to be allowed to adopt him....liability issues.

People are far too careless with their animals...come to think of it, with their children too.

It happens. It absolutely does. People take in dogs that they know have a history of attacks. They keep dogs that have had a history of attack and they absolutely keep these dogs around their children and infants. It's really surprising and shocking how many people are perfectly willing to risk their children's lives and safety over a dog. I see it all the time.disbelief

God bless 'em, but there is no way in the world I'd have let a known child-attacking dog anywhere near my kids. No possible way. That's not worth the risk. I don't care how much one loves dogs. Heck, I love dogs immensely. I've owned them all my life, and always will.

But under no circumstances would I ever let a dog like that around my kids. I don't care if Caesar the Dog Whisperer - who is an absolute magician - vouched for the dog. No freaking way I'd take that risk with my kids.

I did a little research and here are a few observations.

First of all, have you seen the whole video? The family had what appears to be three cameras, and they all caught what happened. The child was riding his trike, and was on the other side of the car from the dog. The dog notices/smells/hears the child, and comes up from BEHIND and attacks the child. There was absolutely NO provocation by the child. This is very important to remember.

After Hero Cat saves the child, Hero Cat chases the dog around the back of the car, and then returns to the child by crawling underneath the car (shortest distance back to the child). By this time the mother has reached the child but when Hero Cat comes up from underneath the car, the mother runs away! She apparently thinks it's the dog coming back, and leaves her child - WHO WAS JUST ATTACKED BY THAT DOG. Unbelievable! She LEFT the child to be RE-ATTACKED. Dang, I don't know what else to say about her, but that's really bad mothering. I mean, REALLY BAD mothering.

Finally, they show the bite marks at the end of the video. HOLY CRAP! There's not a single argument anyone could make to me that would convince me that dog should be anything but euthanized. Take a look for yourself, but I warn you - they are BAD bites:

Next, I Googled "Rehabilitating dogs that attack children". Most of the links were about rehabilitating fighting dogs. All the links I read said that sometimes it was possible, but NEVER should you allow any hopefully-rehabilitated dog around children. The reason is that children may make moves toward the dog that threaten the dog, setting them off and causing an attack on the child. So even if a dog can be rehabilitated (and all articles I read said you never really know if they are rehabilitated until they either bite someone again or die). NEVER EVER put a rehabilitated dog with a child.

Finally, the city of Bakersfield explained their policy, and why they put the dog down. Contrary to what we might think, they didn't just arbitrarily decide to do it. They have a procedure in place for things like this, and they followed it. Note also that the dog owners did not want the dog back:

According to California law, shelters have to hold a dog for 10 days to see if there are signs of rabies after a bite, then the dog is euthanized.

“Since we know that this dog has bit someone, we don’t want to take the liability,” said Julie Johnson, executive director of the Bakersfield SPCA. “That would be very irresponsible of us to place the dog with a bite history with any family in the community.”

Johnson said the dog owners voluntarily surrendered the dog and didn’t want him back due to the liability.

...Johnson told Eyewitness News that this dog is not a candidate for adoption.

I think the mother was chasing after the dog, I would've thought she would pick the child up but I dont think it was neglectful. I love that the cat came back to check on the child.

I've always heard that once a dog has tasted blood, they will never be the same, that they will have a thrist for blood. I'm sure there was blood lost.

it doesnt take much.. stupid human owner, doing stupid human things...too long of a chain, in a public access area, no fencing. just a little bitty chain.. minding my own business, walking up to some stairs, to go look at an apartment...

[img:$uid]http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr54/scorpiorage319/POPS/dogg.jpg[/img:$uid]

^^ first the arm and hand ^^

and i waited soundlessly, in shock, for it to let go. which it did.

as i backed away, my knee

[img:$uid]http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr54/scorpiorage319/POPS/dog.jpg[/img:$uid]

which i then walked away on ,not able to even draw a breath because getting away and the pain was all i thought about.back down the sidewalk, hearing the blood hitting the concrete. people calling myname, sounding so distant and far away..the place i stopped at.that i looked around at, down on the ground..i knew the ground was coming for me, and i fought it.

it doesn't take much, just a stupid human..

this was a pitt, and but for that little chain, i might have been a little less lucky.

thank you.. hug yes it did.it felt like my arm and leg were on fire inside, and i couldn't breathe. watching that video, i am amazed the little one got up and ran, tho i see it took a little minute. i would never WANT to be bitten by a dog, EVER. but if someone had to be attacked that day, i am glad it was me and not the 10 year old that had just walked thru there.the dog came out and barked at him
