Americans: A language question for you...

You're in a nightclub and you've got to pee. Would you say...

a) "I'm going to the restroom."

b) " I'm going to the washroom."

c) " I'm going to the bathroom."

d) Other (please specify)

Thank you!

Most often I will use A or C. If I'm talking to someone I know then C, someone I don't know (or if I have to ask where it is) likely A.

Of course I may just say "I need to pee" as well. Depends on who I'm talking to and how many drinks I've had. lol

I never call it a washroom. Or toilet.

Thanks, Carrie. So, it's common to say "bathroom" - even though there's no bath in there?

Prior to 2006, like Carrie I'd have used "C" in somewhat intimate company or "A" around people I knew less well. Since having moved to Canuckistan, I routinely use "B" now on either side of the border.

Yep.

And now I have a question for you: How on earth is the alphabet song supposed to rhyme when you guys say "zed" instead of "zee?"

I always say "bathroom" when I'm among friends and family, but if I'm at a public place and need directions, I say "ladies' room."

But when I was younger, my answer would have been "a".

As long as you refrain from saying that you have to go and "drop your kids off at the pool."

I usually say bathroom, but people I'm not familiar with I use restroom.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Yes. It's a bathroom whether you can take a bath there or not.

Not super rude, but yeah, it sounds less than classy. It's not as bad as swearing or anything but it's just sorta base. Discovering it all over the UK is generally amusing to us Americans.

I will agree with everyone else here: Choice A out in public and choice C at someone's home. Choice D would be men's/ladies' room which is also used in public. I've never heard any American say "washroom".

Yes! I'm Canadian but I agree that we and the Brits should stop saying "zed" and adopt the American's "zee" for poetry's sake.

I'll either say, "I'll be right back" or "I'm going to the Ladies' room".

**At work, the bathroom is across the hall from my classroom, so my roommate and I say, "I'm going to run across".
