Joni Mitchell never had to twerk.

Miley didn't have to twerk, she chose to.

Whether you think she has talent or not, she already had an established fan base and great success.

This is a young woman who clearly is trying to disassociate herself from her past squeaky clean child persona...and you can't really blame her for that. It happens time and time again with child celebrities.

The difference in this case is her subculture de jour to show how she is one of the cool kids is one that mainstream media had no idea existed until now and her terribly obnoxious and rambunctious representation was really, really poorly executed. Not that twerking and all that crap can be presented in any real better way.

She may be an adult now but, in the end, she just ended up coming off as an obnoxious child trying desperately to fit in.

idk IMancientcrabbyO. Miley ain't never been "hungry" a day in her life like Prince, Madonna, Elvis, etc., they're coming at theirs from a totally different prespective in this society. Besides, Elvis, who died when I was 12, his music I can and have listened to now, even though I really had no clue who he was then, and can relate to it because he had something to say even with all his attention getting antics back in the day. She wants to be seen as a woman now. Fine. Then she should be able to handle all the adult opinions from those who have zero interest in what her coochie looks like. She's equivalent to Paris Hilton in my opinion just another spoiled brat willing to slut themselves out for attention.

To be honest, the more people talk about it and trying to find something to blame for it, the more emboldened the industry - and Miley herself - gets. And everyone else all loses.

My problem with the situation is not that she acted the way she did or wore what she wore. I'm perfectly fine with a young girl being fine with her body. My problem is that lately Miley comes off not as being a true individual but just doing whatever she can do to not be called a child star again. Also why is it that Robin Thicke isn't getting any blame? He was as much in on Myley's doggystyle action as her.

Because Robin Thicke is supposedly immune to something. lol

As for Miley, I think the reason why she performed that way and did what she did was because of attention whoring. Even Gaga didn't get that much attention during her performance. Probably the first time no one focused on her during an MTV show.

eek. You're alive?

The more people talk about it? You mean the more money the machine makes off of it. Like they care what people talk about. Personally, I'm not spending nar dollar of mine for this kind of stuff. Can't speak for others though, I think that's the issue, there's enough people who'll spend silly for more.

LOL lol on another thread, someone was criticizing Robin for degrading women and making them 'sex objects' in his videos. The irony is that this is a site devoted to a musician who has spent many years doing the same exact thing!

'People wanted to make me the white Nicki Minaj,' Cyrus said. 'I'm not coming in trying to rap.'

"A lot of people wanted to try to make me the white Nicki Minaj," Cyrus, 20, told Billboard. "That's not what I'm trying to do. I love 'hood' music, but my talent is as a singer."

Well you've certainy got the stripper/lap dance thing down. confused bored

Like several others have said...sure we've seen skimpy clothes and bare skin before...from both males and females. But real talent preceded the antics and there was substance along with shock. I well remembered Princes' songs, lyrics, and musicianship long after I forgot about the butt-pants. Now it's all done to cover up a complete lack of talent and individuality. Pure skankyness at its best. If there's no talent you're just a boring stripper...male or female.

Hell, my son is only 21 and he said it too. lol

An anonymous quote I found...so true. neutral

We've been breeding pop stars in L.A. for exactly this kind of thing. Take some piece of greedy cracker trash with symmetrical features, vacuum the Cheetos dust off it, train it in a Disney pod, stick boobs on it and have its videos made by porn directors, and everyone under sixteen is yours.

I feel sorry for the younger generations nowadays. Music Awards 25 years ago were SO exciting and full of class, talent, but most importantly, entertainment. Now, they're nothing but noise, smut, and standing ovations for mediocre performances. Gaga's performance was ok, but that song is atrocious. Yet they made it out like it was biggest thing on earth. Add Mileys slut parade, and Perry's "grand finale". Well, what you get end up with is....... CRAP. Someone get me the Hot Tub Time Machine!!!

If you went back to the good ol' days when the music was amazing and the musicians were real, you might find that things really haven't changed all that much...

I appreciate what you're saying, but even in those one-second GIFs, you can Prince and Cat are electrifying compared to Miley and Robin. What is Miley doing?! lol

It's not about the outfit, and it's not about being sexual. If she'd come out and done something great and sexy, then people would have talked about that, and they would have talked about how she's a woman now, and hot. Instead they are talking about how desperate she looks, because really, that's all there is. And they're not saying much about Robin's performance because there is not much to say.

I asked this question in another thread....

Aren't the VMAs supposed to be shocking, provocative, controversial, nasty and vulgar? lol I always thought it was supposed to be some kind of raunchy 'parody' of the other awards shows. It's possible, and very likely, that the MTV producers encouraged Miley to be as slutty, offensive and vulgar as she could be...lol....this kinda stuff pisses off many people, but it also brings in great ratings.

this was all calculated,folks.

Yeah the more people talk about it (and go at it for their own interest), it doesn't really do anything but embolden those to continue what they're doing. True, you're not paying for it but they will get more people interested in them. That's all I'm saying. It is a machine and it is profitable no matter what we say about it. I didn't watch it.

a local radio station birthday pranked a lady here in minneapolis on the radio this morning. called her up, claimed to be from a dance studio where her young pre-teen daughters are studying, and told her her children had won the chance to participate in a dance class with miley cyrus called 'twerking for tweens'. told her her daughters would learn from the best how to shake what their momma gave them falloff falloff

she was outraged! absolutely pissed off and very articulate about why that would be a bad idea. (go mom!!) very funny. "I want to speak with your manager right now!" twerking for tweens..... falloff falloff

Chancellor, help me understand your opinion... If you are comparing what she did to what her father did why is it there is this HUGE stink about her performance? Billy Ray shook his ass all over the stage and in his videos but I never heard a bad thing said... I personally havent heard 1 good thing about what Miley did that night, nor anything good about the train wreck that is becoming her career...

I disagree with that part.

Look at our society...our "celebrities"...we reward controversy. We gobble it up insatiably.

Look at Paris Hilton...Kim Kardashian...do you remember how THEY made it "big"?

Miley is already stinkin' rich. Her Hannah Montana empire made her a VERY wealthy young woman.

Now she's taking it to the next level, career-wise.

Look at what happened. The whole WORLD is talking about it. Ten years from now no one will remember Macklemore's poignant performance since the 2013 VMA's will be remembered as the "Miley Twerking" year.

Just a Sign 'O' The Times my friend...
