Fellow american gets gored by a bull in Spain (Strong, but bloodless, pic)

San Fermín 2013: Extirpan el bazo al estadounidense corneado en el sexto encierro

the guy's name is Patrick E. (20 yo), he was gored by a bull this morning (during the San Fermin "fiestas", where hundreds of guys are chased in narrow streets by packs of 6 angry bulls)

he's stable but the docs had to extirpate his spleen eek

what do you think about this kind of "fiestas" and its rising popularity among young US folks??

It shouldn't surprise, as "Jack Ass" and "Fear Factor" have only capitalized on stunts like this. I'm not saying its a good idea to staple your nutsack to your leg... as there are somethings that are just plain examples of stupidity. "Prank vs. Prank" (google it on youtube) is pretty funny though, with a BF/GF couple constantly trying to outdo each other's pranks on the other. Ah, guilty pleasures.... It's one thing to watch it vs. actually doing it. Isn't it?

Well I would hope that he REALLY understood the risks of participating in this event before he signed up for it, so I don't want to say he deserved it, but really? Getting hurt is a logical consequence of high risk behavior so there.

And I have no idea why these "fiestas" are attracting young US folks but I imagine that it's for the same reasosn that it attracts other men around the world.

The Running of the Bulls in Pamploma is an annual tradition. I don't know that it is becoming more prevalent for young dumb Americans to go over and do this. For years I've known people who have gone.
What you didn't mention is that 2 Spaniards also go injured.

Okay, human, some more tips from your bovine friend:

1) Bulls have sharp horns. Very sharp.

2) Bulls can run pretty fast.

3) Bulls don't enjoy being pinned up, forced to run in certain direction, etc. Bulls are not morning animals anyway.

4)With a whole bunch of humans running all in the same direction at the same time, tripping all over each other, someone is going to get a horn in their ass, their crotch, or their innards.

All of these factors should keep humans from doing the bull runs. Go watch your Honey Boo Boo, post your little pictures on Instagram, and stop doing things to piss anumals off.

I am pretty sure this 'fellow american' will brag about this event for the rest of his life.

I have been to the bull runs in Pamplona and most people doing it are actually Spanish, but I can tell you also that there are quite a few foreigners, most of them Americans, Australians and British lads running with the bulls as well during San Fermin.

It's a kind of a weird happening, but the basic idea of the running of the bulls is actually to stay AHEAD of them or at least at a safe distance, and to get into the arena first before the bulls and all the others. It used to be done to prove that you are strong, fast, smart and courageous. So the idea is not to prove that you are an idiot by getting caught up by the bulls, trampled by them and/or gored by their horns. It can happen tho' by accident. When the streets are slippery, or you are not wearing the right shoes, or somebody else makes you trip in the chaos, you might just end up dead or in the hospital.

But some are driven by the adrenaline kick from the risk of such a thing happening. Some are inexperienced and/or drunk/high, but many others are sober, have been doing it for a long time already and they come back every single year. It's a tradition, originally only Spanish, but in time also for foreigners.
