Abercrombie Is Under Fire For Excluding Plus-Sized Customers

Abercrombie wants only thin and beautiful people in its stores

Retailer is under fire for excluding plus-sized customers.

Abercrombie and Fitch is in hot water for excluding “larger people” from its stores.

According to Business Insider, the teen retailer doesn’t make clothes in sizes above a large because it wants only thin people shopping in its stores. Women's pants don’t come in anything larger than a size 10.

“It's not surprising that Abercrombie excludes plus-sized women, considering the attitude of CEO Mike Jeffries,” Robin Lewis, co-author of "The New Rules of Retail" and CEO of newsletter The Robin Report, told Business Insider.

"He doesn't want larger people shopping in his store; he wants thin and beautiful people," Lewis told the site. "He doesn't want his core customers to see people who aren't as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they're one of the 'cool kids.'"

He continued on to say that the only reason Abercrombie offers XL and XXL men's sizes is probably to appeal to beefy football players and wrestlers.

Considering that 67 percent of the apparel-purchasing population now fits into the plus-size demographic, Abercrombie may want to expand its demographic or it may find itself without many customers. Especially with that attitude.

As distasteful as this is...it's their prerogative to offer clothing to a certain demographic.

I personally have never shopped at A&F nor do I ever plan to.

They are VERY clear about their demographics...just look at their shopping bags...or the surfer-type teen models that they hire to stand outside their stores.

It's our choice as educated consumers to avoid those stores if we find them distasteful, and I for one will discourage my children from ever wearing "clique" brands such as A&F.

A company should not have to make clothes for fat people.
Here in Thailand, you actually have to pay more as the size goes up.

So there's a different price for S,M, L and XL (normally L and XL get

charged more).

The solution is to not support A&F, and it's boring ass clothes.
Forcing them to somehow make clothes for fat people

isn't going to do anything. I mean, they hate miniroties, so

I won't be shopping there anytime soon. Why would I want

them promoting clothes to Asians? Fuck that.

I'll say that 'price hike' has encourage me to more quickly go down in size falloff

I've gone from an XL to an L, and continue my journey. I'm saving money too.

And their stupid ass jeans don't even make your buttex look any better like Hollister jeans do. Seriously, I don't get why anyone would be up in arms over that tediusly boring company.

But, I can see Mr. Whats-his-face's point of view perfectly. I mean, if I were to design clothes, I would be deliberately trying to exclude the 'jock'/cheerleader type... and, I would avoid the redneck type as well--that, of course is much harder to accomplish than his objectives though. There are a lot of rednecks who could pass for high-so these days. Goddamnit

The guy's an asshole. Point blank. No one has to offer anything they don't want to in their private business, of course they don't, that's not the point.

No skin off my back as I wouldn't (and never) have shopped in his stores anyway but yeesh. What a jerk.

There's an A&F store on 5th Avenue in NYC that I walk by a lot, and it constantly has a huge line out the door. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right (at least in regards to that one store). Doesn't bother me if they don't want their crappy clothes worn by overweight people.

I'm way more annoyed by the annoying and misleading style of "reporting" in the article itself.

I'm not sure if we have this store in Canada - I've never seen it or at least noticed it before.

It's not that they wish to sell to a certain demographic because really, pretty much every retailer does that.

It's the proclamations that their demographic is better than everyone else that is just another typical example of this pathetic bully culture we live in.

I think the Situation from Jersey Shore tried to be an A&F model too and he was rejected

so don't feel bad

isn't that U 2nd from the left? or all the way to the right?

Hey we got in

This is probably irritating people

^^ Those are from the Singapore store opening long after they were taking to task for not hiring black folks. I don't think those photos are terribly sincere.

all of those Asian models weren't snapped at the Singapore store

black models were always in the picture, just not in abundance (who cares)

it's the Asians that were absent, I would think there would be tones of Asian females at least

My point is what they outwardly are projecting isn't something I perceive to be terribly sincere.

At least they´re honest and blunt this time and don´t beat around the bush like they did in the past.

I can´t stand that brand and its offshoot Hollister. I don´t care whether they stock large or XL clothing but I don´t like their elitist and bullying attitude and the consumer base that they cater to, and their clothing is horribly boring.

I thought American Apparel had the biggest asshole running the company.

I guess Abercrombie is trying hard to share that position.

I don't buy American Apparel, eventhough I like their clothes, because of the sexist ads.

To much directed at pedophiles, for my taste.

It shows bad taste and lack of style when a brand or band* markets their product with half naked girls. I don't buy products of companies that enforces a (female) unfriendly world.

Their clothes don't even fit "healthy" people. Not everyone is "fat" just because they don't have hips or breasts. neutral

The men's clothing is probably the worst. My boyfriend is broad shouldered with large arms, and even the largest male size from them is too tight.

And let's not even talk about the quality of their clothing. Two washes and the darn things are falling apart.

Cheap garments with expensive price tags that cater to a mostly caucasian, and now very twiggy clientele.

They're only gonna dig the hole in the ground deeper by alienating a large subgroup of potential buyers (pardon the pun). Guess we can all be happy that American Eagle and H&M don't do that. lol
