My boyfriend hates Prince.

Please advise.

.

Anyone surivive that?

.

He likes country and alt. Rock.

.

(Mods I am all bent out of shape, please move if this is the wrong catergory)

.

I thought it was FINE, but I saw my dead husband at the Prince concert Sunday. Or so I thought. I looked back and he was gone. My friend said "Oh I am sorry, was he a big fan too?" I said," no, well kind of, he SUPPORTED me as a fan, and he was around in the 80s to know about him better than me" (older guy), he took me to a Prince concert on our honeymoon. I thinks that why I "saw" him there. I missed having this in common and I had a flashback.

.

Anyways, I have to grin through Rascall Flatts now, while he cringes and makes me change the radio, or cd in the car if its Prince. I have tried to play so many different genres of Prince too for him, I have proven he doesnt just sing high or just do soul. One time, I convinced my highschool BFF with Darling Nikki, she was a marylin manson fan, and I thought that would be more her taste, and that worked!

.

We have our religion and politics on the same page, is this OK?!?

.

I told him, he will go to a concert with me and accidently have fun and enjoy it. He does not think so.

.

On Sunday, Prince closed with ICNTTPOuM (SoTT) and I was just so feeling it. Ironically, my hubby "left me" in June with a kid and a baby O.O. As a crazy fan I thought, maybe this is settling. (WHAT?!?!)

.

Ugh my life is nuts sorry about this rant. Maybe I should be embarrased that I am such a big fan that this matters. I just have so much tied into it. I mean I wouldn't be a poet if I had not come across Prince. Or a linguist, and help translate to save lives. It just matters. I love words and secret messages because of this guy.

.

Someone slap me and say. "Everyone does NOT have to like Prince!" Okay. I can accept that. Well, does everyone who loves ME have to?

.

Any of you with a Prince-hater spouse?!?!?

.

Someone find me the one exception song like when I found Darling Nikki for my goth friend sad

.

Any country fans in the house?

.

How in heaven will I ever be allright?

No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

I really do wonder about someone who "hates" Prince. He's such a versatile mother fucker and objectively a captivating performer, that I just don't see how it's possible. You could not be into his style, that's fine, but if you're a music fan with any brains, I just can't see how you couldn't appreciate his talent. Well unless you're an extremely ignorant, stubborn asshole, maybe then... lol

My boyfriend did not even know that Prince still performs concerts and releases new material, he did not know his songs. he thought that Prince has long been forgotten... Oh, these kids (he's 21).
Now sometimes we listen to his songs together, he says that he likes 5-6 songs, but sometimes I think he praises only to please me ....he is not a hater, but Prince certainly not in his personal top 1000.

So what?? I also do not like most of his favorite artists .... it's really not that important, I recently realized that ... you need to concentrate on what you have in common. wink

Im gonna be brutaly honest with my responce....

You seriously need to see past this dumping a man and "making" them have fun at a concert they really dont care for in the first place ..i know lots of peole who dont like the little purple midget but i dont hold that against them...(my daughter is SHORTER then him and HE has issues with HIS height..ugh please talk to the hand)

If you "cringe" while he listens to his type music... then u KNOW his thoughts on Prince and he isnt forcing you to go thro the agony of "accidently" having fun at his Rascal Flats concert..u just cant force people to like a genre they dont like this includes religion, race, sexuality, etc etc.

You cant control who likes what regardless...see a shrink for this....because if u have kids and u r children dont like the purple idiot then u really have issues....

lock if mods think this is a bait thread.

Prince has the capacity to hate his fans far deeper, and more devestatingly than your boyfriend could ever match. Ergo, his hatred for non-fans must necessarily be worse.

This means, of course, Prince's hatred for your boyfriend could never be matched by your boyfriend in a million years.

this is the part that worries me

you shouldn't have to grin through his music... and he shouldn't make you change the station when your's comes on

it sounds like you guys have a childish competition going on... it's ok to not dig what each other likes ... even if it's *gasp* prince

some of my friends were surprised by my choice of life partner... they were used to seeing me with artistic girls. yet i chose someone very different... but the real qualities that are important to me, she has in spades... that's what matters long term

besides... it's cool to remain your own person with your own interests seperate from your partner's

and are you making too big a deal out of the whole prince thing?... hell yes... but he may well be a bit jealous about you being so into another dude... and he's being a dick about it

Both your taste in music is not the issue here.

I only want to be in a relationship with a person who is generous about my happiness.

And I only want to be with somebody who I wish to be happy because I love him that much.

Your post reminds my why I still want my ex-boyfriend, Londonboy, back.

Few weeks ago, when we met, Londonboy gave me the DVD of Purple Rain and Under the Cherrymoon, because he knew that makes me happy.

Back in the time, when we were together, I went with him to a concert at New Years Eve by a band that I could not care about. By I didn't tell him, because I wanted him to be happy and have fun. So, we went, and I nevers showed that it was not my taste . If I would have, he would have felt guilty about it. And I wanted him to be happy, not guilty.

I have had boyfriend who did not even want to accompany me to a Prince concert. I'm very glad I broke up with him. Because it's not about dictating your taste to the other. It's about making an effort to make the other person happy, out of love.

If your partner does not support your happiness, life is not much fun.

It's a shame that your current partner does not choose the option to make you happy with the things you love.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

If you look deep enough, the root of your problems is not the music, it's the relationship issues you both have. My 2 cents.

Are you kidding? Prince always had different types of haters. There are some (homophobic) haters that hate on Prince for his metrosexual looks. There are some (metal purist) haters that hate on Prince because they think he's not rock & roll. And of course, there are (culturally bias) haters that hate on Prince because he is either "not black enough" or "trying too hard to be white".

.

Sometimes, at the end of the day, you just have to say "f*** those haters". If they failed to see any positive value about an American R&R HOFer such as Prince, then that's their lost, NOT Prince's or Prince-fans'.

He's a country fan? Does he like this song?

If he does, then play it for him. And then, play "Purple Rain" because "Remind Me" is an homage to "Purple Rain".

If he doesn't like "Remind Me" but he's a rock fan, does he like this song?

Because Prince thought maybe "Purple Rain" unknowingly copied "Faithfully" and called Jonathan Cain of Journey to make sure they didn't think he'd ripped them off. They didn't, but anyone can see the songs are very, very similar.

So, if he likes "Remind Me" or "Faithfully", then he ought to like "Purple Rain". And if he likes "Purple Rain", then he ought to like plenty of other Prince songs.

.
