Okay so my 19yr old son says that he and his friends go to Goodwill sometimes just looking for bargains which I though was kinda cool and smart of them to do So today he asked me to go with him and I did I was surprised at some of the stuff they had even though I don't wear folks old clothes or shoes (just can't fuck with em ) anyway I have alot of old vhs tapes including PR and I needed a VCR to watch them Yes I have a blu ray player, but I just can't throw my tapes away so Goodwill had a nice, clean, functional VCR for $4.00 I got it and it works like a charm Im watching Purple Rain now They had some good stuff-alotta designer handbags and shit Anybody else ever find some good shit at Goodwill?

Yeah they had some nice books and DVD's. Never heard of DI's I think the teens really don't care about wearing other folks clothes But I just can't do it Im a germaphobe

I've never been able to get into used clothing. I donate, as does everyone in my family and all my friends. But even back in my real hardcore hippie days when all my friends were wearing second hand clothes and the Bay Area seemed to be overflowing with used clothing stores I just couldn't get into it. At Dead shows I was one of the few people who wore a lot of black.

Also, I can't do used kitchen stuff. That kind gives me the heebie jeebies a little.

But used books? Yes! BIG yes! I've purchased hundreds of them from second hand stores. Quite a few of them that I knew were worth a fair amount of money ($5-$50) that I paid almost nothing for. Used records, that'a another good one. The occasional knick-knack and the random piece of wooden furniture here and there, too.

Best thing I ever got was a bad ass pump organ from a Salvation Army about 15 years ago. But I gave it to a friend a few years ago because I got tired of moving it around.

I still have a VCR, too. I've got some random bootlegs, some that go back to the 80s, that I've never seen on any kind of disc or found ANYWHERE available for download. I'm going to have to break down and get them converted myself eventually. I'll get rid of the VCR at that point.

I occasionally buy pants and shirts at Goodwill. I would never buy underwear there and shoes only if they were new.

I have no problem with buying books, DVDs, Cd's and furniture though.

As for dishes and cups. I use to buy them until i started thinking about the people who let their dogs eat off of plates and the backwash that's in drinking glasses. I still buy pots and pans though.

I get loads of stuff there, last video clip I did was I dressed the set mostly with second hand stuff from the salvos.

My kids wore salvos clothes for first 6 years of their lives (after that age kids wear holes in everything )

I have some nice stuff from there, I don't have any issue with other people's clothes - most things are impulse buys donated to get rid of the bad karma

thrift stores rock! not just the prices, i love that a person never knows what they'll find there.

I dont go very often, which im sitting here wondering why because when I do I ALWAYS find something good!! Last time I got 5 very nice blazers.. cute as hell with jeans! Ive gotten furniture, wood pieces, I wouldnt do a sofa or any soft surfaces though....

I used to sell on Ebay, I got TONS of stuff from there!!

I'm totally down with all thrift stores. I recently found a Royal (vintage) typewriter for 20 bucks , I looked it up on Ebay and they're selling for 300!

And I DO wear the clothes- Love the old Pucci shoes (found those at another thrift store but LOVE them) and love the Salvatorre Ferragamo shoes- I'm always on the look out for those- Always I love to find vintage J.Crew- like from the early 90's- I always scoop that stuff up. You can find all kinds of stuff. And like Tinaz, I have an Ebay store and I'm about to start selling my thrift finds!

I'm in our local Goodwill at least once a day, sometimes more...not only do I buy for myself or my family, I also buy things to resell on ebay...and I make good money doing it...it never ceases to amaze me the things that folks give away/donate...I don't see what the big deal is about buying used clothes, unless they're just ragged or nasty looking (underwear excluded, I aint wearing used draws)...you can tell if a piece of clothing is clean and has been taken care of...the way i look at it, clothes are like cars, everybody is driving a used car & everybody is wearing used clothes...I'd say at least half of my wardrobe has come from a Goodwill or a thift/conignment store...my son has even gotten in on it...all the stuff that the kids here wear -Aeropostale, American Eagle, Hollister, etc- he's realized that he can get insane amounts of the stuff on the cheap at Goodwill...and I'm not talking about worn out shit...some new with tags, some barely worn, some that some other kid simply outgrew...same for adult sizes too...not to mention all the other things you can find there...golf clubs, insane amounts of high end sunglasses, antiques, furniture...like I said, it's amazing what people will give away

if nothing else, Goodwill has provided me with an outstanding second income...

I think I have a mild phobia about thrift stores even though I have gone in my adult years. I'll always have the memories of when my aunt would take me and we would spend our Saturdays for hours going through those stores, it was hot, muggy, dust and smelled funny. That woman would get a chair, or whatever and would re-polyester repaint it a zillion times. There are times I've found some pretty good household items, but I'm not a serious thrift store shopper.

I was just in a secondhand furniture store and I'll be damned if the stuff was not more expensive than new stuff.

And we are not talking about amazing antiques. Just fairly well kept old chairs for $400

Probably books and cd's are the things I have purchased used more than anything else.

Oh yeah, for sure. Doesn't bother me with old books. One pretty sizeable section of my book collection is old books that I picked up just because they were old. You can actually buy old books for a lot less than you'd think. A lot of them are things I would never read, but I love picking up a book from the 17th, 18th or 19th century and flipping throught the pages. Knowing it has been through the hands of any number of people before I bought it adds a whole different context and interest to the experience. Who made them, and why? (Sometimes I can figure that one out.) Who would have owned them? (Only know that for a couple I picked up at estate sales.) How did they get to this part of the US? (Don't know that for very many at all.) Stuff like that.

I started noticing this a good while ago - five years or so. Same thing with musical instruments for the most part. You can find them for less on the internet these days. Whereas you used to be able to go into thrift stores and find them for a steal.

There used to be a rusted out Lamborghini Countach at a salvage yard in Amarillo. I drove by there on the way to New Mexico two weeks ago and didn't see it, but they did have an AMC Pacer. It looked like it was not a total wreck, either. I might stop by there on the way home.

OMG, thanks for making me look at my collection of 70 Louis L'Amour books, all purchased at Half Price Books, in a skewed way!

I'd always imagined those books read over campfires, not toilets!
