As for "lovers", I've had some. Don't feel the need for them anymore.

I would like to clarify that I'm still interested in sex. I'm just not interested in sex with strings attached (and there are always strings attached).

Unfortunate, that. sigh

oh honey, that's not a string I'm holding--it's a leather strap.

except for that bit where females aren't allowed in the temples, and that part where buddha sat under a tree doing nothing but meditate while others brought him food, this is the philosophy for me!

Females are allowed in temples. I am sometimes the only male at the local temple here when I go in to meditate.

Female discrimination is in Buddhist history and indeed monastic life/rules. But, these can change. The West is waking up to a new form of 'atheist buddhism' in which the core principles are applied to people's lives without the myths that surround the religion. The West has more or less stripped away the female/male distinction, which I think is a good thing.

The East has much further to go, but it's a societal problem more than an intrinsically Buddhist problem.

IanRG, if your annoying ass is going to jump in this conversation, my brain is going to explode.

ok. thank you for clarifying, i appreciate that. i was under the impression women were not allowed to participate, or allowed to become monklike.

i just thought of something, ever wonder if buddha had a nice butt?

Ace, I need your positivity right now.

I've been pissed the fuck off all day, and I know that I shouldn't be. My anger is caused by imaginary transgressions. sigh

By 'positivity' I don't mean penis this time, by the way.

I just found myself signing and bobbing my head in the car listening to my favourite radio station. (WMNF 88.5). It was Indian music and I didn't even know the words.

I am strangly in a good mood today.

If you have a meditation practice, this is the time to put it to work. Sit still with the heat and tension of anger. Quiet the internal chatter of other-blame and self-blame. Acknowledge the anger and enter into it entirely. Embrace your anger with patience and compassion for all beings, including yourself.

Either that, or find a random vagrant and beat him senseless. nod

Mariska Hargitay pray,

In a-googlin' some Buddhist stuff, I came across this:

If, through our own ripening knowledge, we appreciate that our ultimate and highest purpose should be Nibbana, the absolute end of sorrow, then all goals beneath that are cast in a new light. When we have something to live for that is higher than fame, honor, friendship, or health — higher even than love — we can never be utterly impoverished or ruined. We are in fact in a much better position to enjoy whatever may be achieved in worldly life, because we no longer depend solely on changeable circumstances for our happiness.

I thought this was worth sharing.

Ace, have you read anything by Alan Watts yet? I would highly recommend him.

Also, something that has come up in my studies of Eastern philosophies, is the idea that we often struggle against what we are experiencing rather than being present. For instance, if we are angry, we think we should be feeling something other than the anger, and so we struggle against the anger, which makes us suffer all the more. This is related to the 2nd Noble Truth that the cause of our suffering arises from desire. We desire to feel something other than what we are feeling, and thus we suffer.

I think it is erroneous to believe that we can be happy all of the time. We are going to miserable sometimes, and it's ok to be miserable. It's ok to be unhappy. It is a part of the human experience. We create our suffering when we attach to the idea that we must be happy all of the time. It makes those times when we aren't happy, that much more difficult to bare.

I know that your reply's making me pretty fucking unhappy! brick

Kidding! biggrin I usually say that I'm happy "95% of the time".

I think that what you're saying is, 'Being unhappy about our unhappiness makes us even more unhappy than we were when we were just unhappy about the original unhappy shit.'?

Am I clarifying that properly? razz
