RIP.

And, not to get morbid or anything, but I'm told that he shot himself in the chest as did another footballer. This was so that their heads could be examined for a condition that football player suffer resulting from years of blunt trauma to the head from playing.

But the reports don't actually state that this 'condition' is the motivation for the deaths. Can somebody shed some light on this?

We're on the same page because that's exactly what I thought when I heard the news.

It will be very difficult to make a causal link between Junior's saddening-beyond-words death and any condition related to his pro playing days. For one, too many other personal factors may come into play in the events leading to this event. Also, his personal medical history and that of his family may make it difficult to isolate the situation as the cause of death. And, even if the condition is successfully linked to his death it could be blamed on his collegiate or high school playing days.

There's just way too much to be looked into to make a final call.

sad

Junior was much beloved here when he played for the Dolphins. He was always one of my faves even through his years at San Diego...so big hearted and full of spirit. I was so shocked and sad hearing this on the drive home from work.

His poor mom is beside herself...my heart goes out to his loved ones.

This sux sad

Does the NFL yet fully acknowledge the problem with this dimensia like disorder that repeated head injuries cause? Are they changing play benefits to help with this?

I've been going back and forth on whether to comment about this. I knew Junior personally...grew up very close friends with members of the Fanua family (his cousins Ray and Frank lived around the corner from me as a youngster).

The last time I saw/spoke to Junior was around 2002/2003, so I'm sure some things may have happened that I am clueless about...but from what I know, this apparent suicide had nothing to do with injuries. All I will say is that he had major problems with his ex-wife (they were still married the last time I saw him and they had major problems then).

I havent read any of the articles that have come out today and I dont want to. Not sure if they reported it, but a year or two ago, Junior drove his car off of a cliff in Oceanside. Many wondered then if he was trying to kill himself. The media here in San Diego swept it under the rug when Junior claimed that he fell asleep at the wheel, but you could tell not everyone bought it.

I cant even begin to tell you how sad I am today. I spoke to my partner Ray, Junior's mom and a few other old school homies...I cant even describe the pain. Instead, I will tell my fondest Junior Seau story.

On November 28, 1992, my high school football team was in the playoffs. Our first round opponent was the Oceanside Pirates (Junior's alma mater). The game was at our home field and we all knew Junior was on the Oceanside sideline. It was a huge deal, seeing as he was still playing for the Chargers then. Junior knew I was the QB. In the first quarter, right before I took the field, Junior walked over to our sideline. Everyone in our crowd was going crazy...he walked right up to me (I was throwing warmup tosses) and "tackled" me from behind. He didnt drop me...just wrapped his arms around me and picked me up off the ground, jerking me back and forth. He let me down, turned me around and hugged me. He said, "You know you're in trouble, dont you Baby Boy?" I laughed it off...he wished us luck, shook our coaches hand and all that, then went back over to Oceanside's sideline. We lost 27-21. Afterwards, Junior was waiting with everyone else in front of our gym, signing autographs. When I walked up, he came up to me, put his arm around me and steered me away from everyone else. He knew how devastated I was (this was my senior year and I lost in the first fucking round!) and told me "You may never play football again, but you had some amazing moments." He started talking about games I played in Pop Warner and one particular game I played as a junior. I cried like a baby, right in front of him. He told me, "Cut that shit out! It's just football!" I straightened myself up and he walked me back to the gym and left. I got major props from EVERYONE that day (WOW! He's friends with Junior Seau!)...a day I will never forget.

Rest in peace, Junior. I will never, ever forget you. worship
