I nominate this for Post of the Year. lol

what a mess! i'm lost here...

so, so far we have these concepts:

-Great Britain aka United Kingdom (Union Jack) which includes:

a)-England "British Accent" (oxford?)

b)-Scotland "Scottish Accent"

c)-Wales "Welsh Accent"

d)-Northern England (part of the UK, not England)

e) other territories around the world...

-and then there's Ireland, an independent country which speaks english (due to wars and old conquests, lol) but with the thick irish accent, and also has its own idiom (gaelic??) (and yes, the analogy "Canadians & US citizens" is valid here...)

am I right??

btw, what is the exact relationship between Canada/Australia and the UK?

I can't help you with your question, but it reminded me of when there was an exhibition at the museum where I worked that was all art from different countries in Africa. Whenever I was in a cab, I would strike up a convo with the driver and then tell them to come to the museum to see the show, especially if they were from one of the countries whose art was included in the show. One of the cab drivers was from Egypt and when I told him about the exhibition of art from African he insisted that Egypt was not part of Africa. confuse I realize there are huge religious and cultural differences - not just from country to country, but from northern Africa and sub-Saharan - but Egypt is on the continent of Africa. He wasn't buying it. lol

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Just like you can't convince many people north of the Rio Grande that Mexico is part of "North America".

No wonder you are lost. Right off the bat there you are wrong. Great Britain is an island in the U.K., not "aka United Kingdom".

I'm Scottish, born and bred. On forms etc I put my nationality as Scottish not British. It's not because I don't want to be considered British. It's just the way I was brought up. My parents were hardened highlanders who would have branded the word "Scotland" on my forehead if they could have gotten away with it.

Thankfully I live in the 21st century. Scottish/English/British, who fucking cares? We all live on the same crappy island. We all pay for the Queens knickers and get shagged up the arse for the same things.

Yeah...I think that the term "British accent" (which I've heard before) is incorrect.

But then, since in America we speak "english" I guess it's easier to say (of an Englishman) that he has a "British" accent (as in "British english" compared to "American english").

question No?

And even within England, you can get very different sounding accents depending on region.

It's the exact same with Scotland.

It's been a bitch. There are so many eastern europeans here I sometimes forget where the fuck I am. They don't call a certain part of the city where I live "Little Warsaw" for nothing you know.

so, Great Britain is basically Scotland, Wales and England? ok

UK is Great Britain and North Ireland, then?

Yes. Imagine if the continental United States (contiguous U.S. if you really want to get technical) had its own name that excluded Alaska and Hawaii--something more confusing than "continental United States" haha--then you'll see why many people get it mixed up.

I'm thoroughly confused now about who is British and who is English... lol

I like trying to disguish the different accents though. I can tell the English accent from Scottish pretty easily but it's a little harder for me to tell Scottish from Irish. The Scottish sounds the prettiest to me because it sounds more sing-songy.

oh, ok then

and by that logic, a British person is someone who was born in England, Scotland or Wales, whether he/she likes it or not, lol
