Apparently every kid should do these at least once in their life;

1. Being part of a team

Teamwork, the sweet taste of victory, and the bitterness of defeat are just a few of valuable lessons children can learn from team sports.

2. Camping

Every child deserves the chance to experience nature in its purest form. From hiking and roasting marshmallows, to sleeping under the stars - camping is the stuff of cherished childhood memories.

3. Chores

A little hard work never hurt anybody. Besides, why should Mom and Dad have all the fun?

I grew up never having been part of a team, never went camping, never experienced farm life, never had a lemonade stand & didn't bowl until I was a teenager.

Maybe that's why I'm so F'd up???

My kids have experienced everything except farm life. (Well...they barely have any chores and flying a kite was less-than-successful...but we'll rectify those soon enough!)

Is there anything that you'd like to add or subtract from that list?

I think that riding a bicycle should've been on there.

Also - make your own toys! I remember flattening bottlecaps & making those spinning things with the strings, or nailing them onto pieces of wood and making "cars". Kids nowadays don't "create" anything with their imagination anymore. Even Lego sets are pre-manufactured to build something.

Camping sucks. I did every one of the things on that list as a kid - and that's the one thing I would love to cross off the list.

And a kid can't have a lemonade stand now. The authorities will be on her/him like white on rice.

I experienced all of those as a kid.

I'd add experience playing a musical instrument. If I ever have kids I will ensure a proper music education but I think every kid should learn to play at least one instrument.

OMG, I hate being part of a team. I hate to comprimise.

2. Camping

I used to love camping with friends when we were young, especially during our eary teen years, when the girls would show us their boobs and vaginas, and we'd flash our pee pees. And, our friends with older brothers and sisters would sneek us alchohol.

3. Chores

Fuck I hate chores.

4. Snow

1. School P.E. mostly

2. If 6th grade camp counts, then again as an adult taking my son in Cub Scouts.

3. My family fully believed in chores.

4. Not until I was an adult, but I took my kids.

5. Nope, but growing up here during car trips we use to pass by horses and cows out pasturing and got a full fragrant effect, does that count?

6. How about Girl Scout cookies, those damned school magazines and candy bars we had to go door to door, March of Dimes? Me and some girlfriends put on a play once and sold tickets, not that many but we did it.

7. Yep! Every spring.

8. Not til I was an adult, had fun too.

I know this is impossible, but I wish every kid could spend at least one summer overseas in another country, radically different from his own.

I really think there'd be a lot more tolerance if kids got at least some exposure. Sure, some will walk away from the experience reinforcing their bias or prejudices, but many will broaden.

3. Having a pet to learn responsibility

4. Easter Egg hunts so you can learn about useless competition

5. Building something from nothing to unleash your inner creativity

8. Visiting an old folks home so you will know that life is not eternal and that you will wear diapers again in your life.

I did all of them as a child. I actually grew up on a farm (with cattle and hogs, as well as crops). It's overrated. The lemonade stand didn't really work, because we were in the country and the cars drove by too fast.

I think being part of a team is very important. It can teach you a good work ethic, but also the importance of being reliable - the other x many people on your team are depending on you to show up for the game, to learn your part for the spring play, to try your best, etc.

I might add something more intangible like "being disappointed" or "not getting your way". In the real world (ie. as an adult) you rarely get everything your way and it's useful to know how to deal with that. I would also add volunteering/community service.

12. Spending quality time with your parents/family, like a family game/movie night

13. Learning that you can't always get what you want, but sometimes with hard work, you get what you need. And that's good enough.

14. Learning an instrument or exploring an artform, so that you can learn to feel and not always think.

Movie night was the best when I was growing up. We had this big screen tv (floor model) that was right next to the fire place. Parents forced us to watch old movies and that's where I developed and appreciation for Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers, Peter Cushing, Joan Crawford and Alfred Hitchcock to name a few. Hot sauce and popcorn was dee lish!

I tell you I don't ever want to end up in one of those places. NEVER!

1. Make pets out of bugs: Catching lightning bugs and smashing their butts on your skin so you glow was super fun (though I tended to not smash them and just hold them in my hands). Also, work on your small muscle control and reflexes by trying to catch a bee in a jar! Then you put the jar in the freezer for about 5 minutes and take the bee out and put it on a flat surface. Tie some string around the joint between the abdomen and thorax and the other end to a railing outside but be quick before the bee "wakes up". BAM, you have a bee kite. Used to do that as a teen.

2. Do somersaults down a hill. Or just play in the damn grass in general. If you don't live near any grass, learn how to play basketball. Easy way to make hella friends is to play basketball in any community.

3. Read a damn book. By your damn self. Maybe even pick the fucking thing out. I started with:

4. Draw something. Learn to draw. Practice drawing. It helps you focus and unlocks creativity.

5. Don't get a phone until you're 18. The fuck do children need phones for?

.... I like all those except for camping since I don't do mosquitoes.

Every kid should learn to swim... going to an actual beach should be a requirement but also to learn how to respect nature.

Every child should learn how to work the earth and garden a bit... growing something from seed and eating something fresh that they grew teaches a kid much... like how to make a perfect mud pie.

Teaching a child how to cook is a must. Breakfast for dinner is always a fun way to do it. Extra whipped cream is a necessity

A family night is right on track... we don't do camping in my household. I let the kids set up a tent or fort in the living room and they camp out there when we have a "movie" night.

Instead of roasting marshmallows, we pop popcorn (off the stove) and add melted marshmallows, butterscotch, nuts and other fun stuff that we make... ALL HOMEMADE.

Every child should have a parent around them to play with at least for one hour a day.

Every child should have a pet... mine have allergies but they keep fish/frogs. Gotta know about life cycles and death.

Every child should be told NO. As often as possible, especially if they are an only child.

Every child should learn how to buy things from the icecream truck/cornerstore/bakesale/yardsale... teach a kid what money is for.

Every child should have a formal holiday they dress up for to learn proper manners... can't be raising wild animals, that's what spring break is for.

Everychild should visit the ocean or the forest or a majestic looking part of their surrounding world to appreciate the world they live in.

I went camping for the first time last October...we all had a BLAST! By "camping" I mean setting up a tent in a camp site with toilets and a convenience store nearby.

2 years ago I set up a lemonade/soda/cookie stand for the kids during the yearly "Nautical Mile Festival" to take advantage of the throngs of people who park in the neighborhood on their way to the festival AND raise money for the carnival rides.

They made about $200!!!

That is an excellent suggestion.

I firmly believe that my travelling to Honduras so many times as a kid...especially when I was 12 and went to the rustic little fishing village where my dad grew up...helped me develop a sense of humility and appreciation for what I have.
