Homeschooling

or Home based parent monitored education.

There has been a lot floating around about the evils of home based educations. Mostly the lack of socialization. But with what seems to be a push to competing for basic education. With massive education cut backs, in Texas for example will be losing $4 billion in elementary education. Hawaii, stands to lose a $75million grant. A total of 37 states will be receiving education cuts, including mine, on top of cuts already made this year. It looks like gone are the days when parents sent their kids to school to get an education. This isn't a slant at teachers or a complaint about the educational staff, but there is only so much they can do. When my kids were in school there was so much push to being prepared to pass this or that national test. Then a few year passed and suddenly the style of teaching had to be changed. The old one wasn't working. As a parent I felt obligated to keep up will whatever the demands were from the institution as oppose to just concentrating on what I felt should be fundamental. Now my children are adults and I'm no longer a part of the school systems, but the stresses seem to be getting worse. Eventually I'll have grandchildren in this system. Perhaps it's time for a new mindset about education.

I don't like the idea of home schooling. You don't get a break from the kid(s).

What I have to say on this subject would get it moved to P&R, so I'll just shut up. lol

Yeah, I was thinking more homebased education and changing mindset. Not too many people can afford to stay home with their kids 7 days a week all day any way even if they wanted to.

The part about the current system not working.

My sweetie is very involved in trying to start a charter school for low-income and minority kids. The high school dropout rate among young black men in our city is 48% and the school district here has been failing black kids for 40 years.

The school board voted their proposal down this week. And what group do you think was the linchpin in that defeat? The teachers union. It fought the proposal every step of the way.

So the next time you hear anyone talk about how the teachers union cares about kids, call bullshit. The union cares about the union - and protecting its own turf and work rules and money. It doesn't care about kids. It doesn't care about teaching them.

Meanwhile, another group of kids gets flushed down the toilet while the grown-ups dither.

I guess I'm just reaching a point that putting so much energy into trying the change the school systems isn't getting anywhere because there does seem to be so much undercutting ensuring that only those that can afford to send their children to those special little centers are the ones getting the full basic skills they'll need for higher education. I beginning to think of your child's education, just the basics as a competition, not something that is guarenteed or a right anymore

I've never heard anyone say teachers' unions care about kids.

Teachers' unions are formed to protect the rights and jobs of teachers.

Are you expecting the teachers' unions to come up with the curriculum that kids should be taught? Are you expecting the teachers' unions to run the schools, and take the place of the local boards of education? Are you expecting the teachers' union to under-represent the needs and rights of their constituency?

Your problem isn't with teachers' unions. Your problem is with the school board. It's not the teachers' union's fault they had better arguments than your sweetie did.
