The death of FLASH?

My love affair with flash started at the end of the last millennium and continued until about 2004-ish. I think more than many technologies, it helped the web become an exciting and content/media rich environment (in addition to exponentially increased available bandwith for retail customers) via DSL, cable, and FIOS, etc.

But when Steve Jobs announced several years ago that he would not include flash on his newly introduced iPhone, it was the primary reason I would not buy an iPhone. Jobs announced this during the height of FLash über ubuiqity. I waited for the iPhone 2 to come out, hoping that Macromedia/Adobe and Apple would have settled their dissagreement in time for me to buy the iPhone, but they didn't. I thought Jobs mad.

This is not the first time of course--I actually thought the idea of the first point-and-click Macintosh was a really stupid idea back in the day green-screening and Commodore64's were all the rage. lol

But, seriously--it was on 90 percent of the products out there! It beffudled me why Jobs would not at least try and work with Adobe.

And of course, by the time the iPad was launched it became painfully obvious that Apple had no intention of using Flash. Jobs himself said that Apple had no plans to EVER use Flash. By this time though, the technology that ran flash was starting to bore me a bit. Prince's dreadful Lotusflow3r website looked like a teenager discovering flash for the first time and creating his own New Power Dungeons and Dragons page out of it. ill

Today, more firms are working on getting rid of Flash from their webpapges. I've been fortunate enough to assist in the creation of a webpage, and we've avoied flash altogether.

I don't believe this is due soley to Jobs, though having the world's most popular smartphone, media player device, and dominant tablet PC not support your technology must have hurt Adobe a bit.

But, I think flash was on it's way out anyways because of HTML5. All Jobs did was hasten the adoption a bit---ok, quite a bit.

I'm not an expert on these technologies by any means, but I'm struggle to understand how HTML5 in combination with programming languages will provide as elogant a solution as Flash when it comes to those nifty little online games.

Joecartoon.com, what will you ever do?

Android has Flash and it's smooth as butter. I know at least 5 people that switched from iOS because they required flash support for one thing or another. Now they've used Android they prefer it as it's a far superior operating system cool

I also think flash will die because the average person is getting iphone/ipad

I have hated flash websites for the longest time and there seems to be less and less of them around

means software developers will have to put their time and effort into alternative before apple becomes majority market share

Not going to happen, Android already has a sizable market share lead. Almost 50% worldwide. Apple have 19%.

19% and rising

it would be silly to not do anything about it.

I never knew Apple products couldn't see Flash. I'm really late learning this, but it explains a lot. I used to create a lot of Flash graphics on websites, never knew people on Mac's weren't seeing any of it, lol. My old MySpace page must have been a total nightmare for so many , lol.

Apple computers can see it, I could even create flash stuff on my mac, I have the software.

It's iPads, iPhones, iPods that run the iOS that can't see it.

Android is not far superior lol .

But let's pretend that android and it's devices were far superior. This wouldn't stop Flash's slip into lesser relevance or death. Novell Corporation, now owned by Attachmate, still makes a far superior NetOS/Network Mangement/directory service solution than Microsoft. Active Directory still has a clumsy replication scheme compared to e-directory, and SMS still can't match the features of Novell Zenworks..... but, Novell is losing. Novel has lost.

The Apple iPhone market grew this year by %115, and the iPad commands %85 of the market still with no end it its dominance in sight in the next couple of years. I serously doubt there will be a mass exodus from Apple products to other products. Apple consistently tops surveys for customer satisfaction (this is an 8 year streak btw, so not just a current a 'trend'): tops http://news.cnet.com/8301...-8th-year/

But, the real culprit to Flash's demise will be HTML5. Issues with Flash: http://antezeta.com/news/flash-problems

HTML5 has been looming for some time now as an update to HTML4 is badly needed (is is evident with 3rd party plugins like Flash filling the feature gap), and the trend was slowly moving in the direction of an Open source solution to rich media web content. What Steve Jobs did was merely hasten it---there is a noticeable momentum change since rejection of Flash for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad. Now all the major browsers support HTML5 even though it is considered to be in its infancy with more features and standardization to come.

My honest vision of Flash is that it will still be around, but will not longer come close to dominating to market. The dominoe affect has already started. And the bohemith Microsoft is even dropping it from their Windows 8 tablets: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news...y-14949869

Ah, thank you for that clarification. I thought that would have been otherwise unusual.

no probs! it would have been TERRIBLE!!!

I think the way apple sees it is that everything is moving towards apps and special mobile sites anyway. Although that doesn't make as much sense for iPads, where you could view a nice website at a full size hmmm
