Check Dell as you can get some sharp laptops.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/...60&p=1

If you want to take a chance, you can get one from their Outlet.

http://outlet.us.dell.com...&s=dfh

Also tigerdirect for Lenovos, Asus, Acers, etc.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

I bought a Hewlitt Packard at Walmart two years ago for around $600.

I have a question though. I always used it plugged into the wall and never use the battery. When I have it plugged in, it shines all nice and bright and if I unplug it from the wall and look at it using the battery, the screen is not as bright. Someone told me that was normal. My question is, lately in the last two months or so, about once a day, while I'm using it plugged into the wall, the screen will flicker a little bit for about a minute and it will look kinda dark like it does when I look at it with the battery. Does this mean my battery is going out and need a new one? Does this mean my cord may need to replaced? What the hell does this mean?

hmm, yeah it dims to save battery power.

But if it flickers, who knows? it could be your power supply is coming & going, maybe just the connection is bad.

Or it could be the screen.

I doubt it is the battery though, since you say you almost always use it plugged in, and it happens when it's plugged in.

Yeah, it happens when it is plugged in and when it happens, I unplug it and the screen dims like it does when it runs through the battery but it continues to flicker. It only lasts about a minute or two and then it goes back to normal but it does it about once a day, sometimes twice a day. The fact that it flickers whether it's plugged in or not, makes me think that there's nothing wrong with the cord. If it is due to the screen, could that be a virus or something? I have Norton on it and have scanned and it says I have no viruses. The damn thing doesn't need to go out on me because I ain't got no money to buy another one. lol

ah yeah I think you are right

I think that with laptops & cell phones, the screens are often the first to go because you flip them open and closed a lot.

I'm not an expert, but I doubt it's a virus, I think it's maybe a sign the computer is on its way out

Is it a Pavillion dv6000 or 9000 series? If it is one of those models and is running a Nvidia graphics card, they had faulty chipsets. Might be a sign that the video display is about to go neutral

For 600 bucks?

Well, if you do photo editing, then an actual system will give you more power for that amount of money. Dell makes some 'tiny' systems for really cheap that don't skimp on power.

But if you need a laptop, my favorites are dell and sony (sony normally is pricier, but they've been better lately). We had the fewest problems at our company with IBM laptops : http://shop.lenovo.com/SE...01076&

They're not to sexiest things, but I recall all of our help desk and technies preferred them because they apparently were tougher (you could drop them), and they had fewer hardware problems.

But I never saw any official numbers. This is purely annectdotal evidence.

I just looked at it and it has an emblem that says AMD Athlon X2 and underneath that emblem, it has a Nvidia Graphics emblem. Beside it is a Windows Vista emblem.

In my experience with Sony you'd be paying more for a inferior system compared to the Toshiba, Sony have more "brand-name markup" from what I've seen. Did you look at the Acer I linked you to? You should try and get something with an i5 processor if possible.

I've seen miniature looking laptops in Walmart and I don't see how people use them. There's no way I could type on one of them. I have to have a full size keyboard because I do lots of typing in the forums, especially when I'm going off on somebody. Plus, I'm a man and have big fingers....it's just a shame that another part of my body is not the same proportion as my hands. That "big hands" myth is a lie. lol

In 2008, I bought the cheapest computer in the store (not a laptop) and it's an Acer. It has been an excellent computer. I've never had internet on it though and plan to never have internet on it. I use that computer to store all my music and I don't want to take a chance on ever possibly getting a virus. I use it only for storing and playing music and nothing else. I call it my "music computer".

Their build quality has improved substantially in the past 3 years, since they got a new, more ruthless CEO. They've restored their previous reputation quite remarkably.

Just got a MacBook Air 11" 128gb solid state drive, 4gb ram, i5 processor.

TOTAL COMPUTING BLISS.

Incredibly fast and intuitive. The multi touch trackpad with Macosx Lion is so nifty. They've implemented a lot of touch gestures similar to iPhone and I can get around my screens and apps with lightning speed. Cutting edge shit. Brilliant and couldn't be happier!
