What Happened To MTV, VH1, & BET?!

HBO, Cinemax, Showtime etc have all been around for years & they still do what they used to, show uncut commercial-free movies. Yet, none of the music video stations barely ever show music videos anymore, so why do you think that is? What the fuck happened?!

The world will never know. It's the same thing with Disney and Cartoon Network And Nickolodeon. They used to have mostly nothing but animated shows, now look at it now...not a good show at all.

MTV stop being fun when they stop showing TRL, Beavis and Butt-Head, Cribs, Punk'd, The Making of A Music Video, Diary etc...they used to actually be a music network, now their biggest shows are all about dumb teenagers and dumb people in general.

BET...no comment.

VH1...no comment.

They do? The only time I get HBO is when I'm at a hotel, and when I check for a movie to watch, they're always showing an episode of some series. I don't know what happened to TV in general. I hate the onslaught of contrived reality shows. The only tolerable ones of those are Survivor and Amazing Race, where there is an actual competition. I completely don't get Big Brother - see who can live in a house the longest - or the increidbly idiotic idea of the Bachelor/Bachelorette. One day they can't decide between two contestants, the next day it's "true love" with the one left. Even worse are the shows where they just film peiple's lives and air it. My wife watches all of that stuff.

They still have a few good dramas, but whatever happened to funny. Shows like Taxi, Cheers, Friends. Maybe there are some out there that I don't watch, but the ones my kids watch simply aren't even remotely as funny as those. Lately I've been watching all of the cheers episodes in order - they stream over netflix. I'm on season 3 now.

As for MTV, I rememer watching that all of the time. I'd swtich to it during a commerical to watch music videos and forget to switch back to what I was watching. That when I first started noticing Prince. It seems like its' been 20 years since you could just turn on MTV and watch videos like that, though.

Orger! ky

As far as those channels, it was actually explained on an MTV documentary that

the execs at MTV felt viewership for just seeing videos 24-7 was waning and that

audiences showed more positive responses to various types of shows, etc.

I believe each of the music network channels have alnternate (MTV2, etc.) which

show a great deal more videos, right?

That is true, but you end up having to pay more for them, if your cable/satellite provider even carries them.

I'm firmly planted in denial

a big major fact also is the music that is out there sounds so much a like and the artists are like the andy warhol mentality 15 mins of fame

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yeah - I was thinking something similar about how much mainstream music has taken taken over those stations, which when you look at the audience in general, they are all about the pop culture, hence the reality shows.

It all may be totally unrelated, but the makes a connection in my mind.

In all 3 instances, media conglomerate Viacom happened. What conglomerates do and do best is exploit those willing to be exploited and pander to the lowest common denominator. As evident by Viacom's programming decisions over the past 2+ decades, they have no artistic vision. Providing quality, innovative entertainment is not something they concern themselves with. They take over a valued commodity and slowly devalue it to the point that the original product/service becomes inconsequential to their quest to make as much of a profit by any means necessary.

No. MTV2 began its existence in 1996 as M2; a music video channel that played a diverse mix of artists and genres (everything and everybody who didn't stand a chance of getting airplay on MTV). Hour after hour after hour of nothing but music videos (a concept the original MTV had long abandoned). M2 lasted about 4 years and has since been renamed MTV2. And being true to its namesake sister station. MTV2 now fill their daily schedule with endless hours of the same diarrhea inducing reality shows and sitcom and sketch comedy show reruns that turned MTV: Music Television into MTV: Non-Music Television.

You must be young.

MTV stopped being good before TRL came around. Carson Daly was the death knell of the station.

VH1 followed suit with reality television, eventually eclipsing MTV's efforts - until Jersey Shore.

BET is owned by the same company. Obviously their programming heads would think the same way.

No, MTV hadn't completely gone to shit by that point; they still showed a lot of music videos, and TRL wasn't really a *bad* show; especially if you were a teenager at the time (which was probably the demographic they were aiming the show at).

To me it's right around the time that Carson left (or they replaced him), and started replacing most of the other air time for videos with other shit, that I consider the real death of the network. It's right around that time too that "Real World" stopped being worth watching; probably the last good season was Real World Hawaii or Real World New Orleans.

Carson joined when MTV was pimping the teen pop revival. Sorry, but there is nothing of merit on a channel that caters to 13 year old girls, IMO!

But yes, RW:NO is probably the last really good season. I had a huge crush on Danny, lol.

Yes you have to pay for HBO.

Obviously MTV found they got better ratings with reality TV so they went with that. HBO is doing well with original series' and movies, so they do that.

Viacom happened. TRL sucked cause teen pop got on my nerves for overexposure and I was more into r&b/hip hop and thought it wasn't getting enough credit on the show. But I do miss shows like Making the Video, and remember some cute Janet specials. I fortunately had VH1 as well at a time when they had positive Michael and Janet specials airing before Invincible and that made me love him even more, but I don't have it anymore and from the sound of things, I'm glad I don't. We now have MTV here, but they are shit and don't play music either and are run by narrowminded people and ditzes. BET used to be so good too at one point, but I don't even think they play new music videos aside from on 106 & Park, cause if I see BET now, they are outdated ones from 2006 though 2008

BET is exhausting. Now if I want black television, I just watch Centric.

MTV and VH1 aren't worth 2 cents either. Fuse is pretty good though.

time flies.

In a nutshell...DEREGULATION happened! Once the media conglomerates were allowed to buy up any and everything. They did just that and fucked it all up with what they want us to see because they figured out that art doesn't imitate life. Life imitates art! Just look around. shrug

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

That's because you weren't a teenage girl! I still loved MTV then lol .

Besides, they weren't all boyband teen-pop. They did still show other stuff too. So did VH1. Both stations didn't truly jump the shark till a few years later.

I see. Well, it shows you how much television I've watched.

I'm confused though. I thumbed through stations about 3 years ago and remember seeing several versions of MTV. One played only Indie music, another appeared to be more hip hop oriented and latin music, another was called MTV-U or something like that. I swear there was like 5 or 6 of them, just for MTV alone.

VH1 had at least 3 variants.

I swear to gawd, I had like 10 music channels and only 2 were the original MTV and VH1 with the reality show format. I remember being quite shocked by it, firstly because I only watched about 3 channels of my 400 selection boxed , but also because i couldn't figure out why or how a MTV could maintain them all lucratively.

I just remembered being baffled by how many variants there were.

Last time I was at someone's house with digital cable, there was VH-1 Classic (blocks of the same ten 30-year old pop and hair metal videos broken up by old concerts and music documentaries that are repeated all week ad nauseum), VH-1 Soul (blocks of the same ten 15-year old neo-soul videos broken up by old music documentaries that are repeated all week ad nauseum), and MTV Jams (all the latest shit-hop you can stand). Everybody I know who wants music from their cable provider just put on their favorite Music Choice station [audio-only channels with still photos of the artist and random trivia typed on the screen].
