I'm going to check out Perth on our west coast, I've heard good things!

I still need beach sorry

I think it's best to be at where you're at. With any West Coast city, you don't know what you can get:

  • Earthquakes

  • Dust storms

  • Heat

  • Tsunamis (least in California)

I mean west coast Australia! lol

My other half has been nagging me to go to Perth but it's just so damn far away from anything else. I've heard it's lovely but I'm staying put! hmph!

Im from california and i think california is meh. For example, people assume that california is very tolerant of almost everything. however thats not the case people of San Francisco have a very different view about everything than lets say people who live in small cities like San Pablo, Richmond,Oakland, etc. in the bigger city lets say people are more open minded about certain things but in the smaller cities that is not the case. Furthermore I hate this whole thing about "yeah we live in california we are the best" attitude, let me also say that i dislike any form of nationalistic, patriotic, prideful, cheerleader mentality.

[Edited 7/13/11 20:45pm]

you're very right, the smaller cities are very different! i just moved away from the south bay area to another city within california, and i love it so far though. but people do change based on location in this state.lol

I just wrote a whole bunch of really interesting stuff about the Bay Area and Northern California, but it all sucks, so I'm not going to post it. biggrin

However, Oakland is not a small city. Its actually the 47th most populated city in the United States. San Jose is 10th, and San Francisco is actually 13th. Beyond that its pretty fascinating how many of the top 200 are in SoCal compared to NorCal. I would have thought we'd have a few more up here.

Agree! That place sucks.

That's the joint!

I guess it's a California thing.

I get a taste for them.

Me too, actually. Right up there where they still have huge wild evergreen forests, but there's also lot of snow and ice very near by. I might actually do it (probably in Alaska, though) if I didn't think I'd miss the Bay Area too damn much.

I was born in California (Oakland) but moved to Virginia when I was 2 and lived there until I was 12 when I moved back to CA. I love the Bay Area biggrin

Amoeba Music and Rasputin are my favorite stores

b-boying/breakdancing in SF or in Berkeley

the comic book, anime, and video game stores

The malls: New Park Mall in Newark/Fremont, Sunvalley in Concord, and Hilltop in Richmond.

Farmer Market and flea markets on Ashby in Berkeley or in Downtown Oakland

In Berkeley, the Rasputin building and the Amoeba building are right next door to each other

people told me my city reminded me of SF (although I have no idea WHY unless they mean the mild weather) and I dressed accordingly. I'm used to 4 seasons in one day here so I'm always prepared.

This pic was taken in June.

Trying to predict but so far, any warning would be about a minute, depending on where it originates.

So they don't find out until THAT DAY? lolwut? People should be prepared for things like that. I'm surprised California tolerates it so much (since they're not actually far from Japan and they're based in the Pacific Ocean).

It's scary, but they can't really predict earthquakes. However, the San Andrea's Fault is known to be very unstable with many regular, minor quakes. Thus when they see an increase in seismic activity, it could be a start and a warning sign of a bigger quake. So there is some time to predict, but it is not a lot. Even more scary, this last year we have seen major earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand and Chili. All corners of the Pacific, except for North America...
