a crassly self-congratulatory thread: A SHOW I WROTE JUST GOT PICKED UP FOR THE NY MUSICAL FESTIVAL!! so my occasional co-writers (a lyricist and a composer) and i wrote a funny little bizarre-o one man musical about a kid's birthday party magician having a mental breakdown. we dubbed it "Just Like Magic"
this was about 5 years ago, and we ran our wacky little dark comedy with all it's twisted puppets, magic, and songs for a few weeks in a small theatre in the west village, then moved it to a second theatre and ran it a few more weeks.
flash forward a few years in which we co-write a completely different show that falls apart. i take the script and characters and turn it into a straight play that ends up becoming part 1 "gauging noel" of my 5 play cycle "death (and straight boys)", and write parts 1-4.
they go off and write a new musical called "Most Likely to Die" which is picked up for and plays as part of the 2010 NYMF (New York Musical Festival).
I get a call the other night to come meet them for coffee. turns out they submitted "Just Like Magic" for the 2011 NYMF, and we got picked up!!!!
we are set for a couple of shows in october!

Congrats; that's exciting news! The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Congrats! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

awww, thank you all!
just got off the phone with the composer and we are already planning the walking of the red carpet. last year, they didnt let the two of them walk it, but we are going to go guerrilla if we have to. we are going to rent a limo and show up with chris (they lyracist and star) in his wacky "Christopher T. Magician" character, and with the puppets in sunglasses and walk that bitch.
we are going to tell our festival rep in advance. so far, they have been treating us like the clown princes of the festival and letting us do whatever we like anyway. since we are in the "special even" category, we seem to be getting away with things the other people cant. they like us enough that they already added another performance of us.

i doubt we will be getting any for this show, but my play cycle "death (and straight boys)" is big time award bait. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton
