A J Crew ad featuring fashion designer Jenna Lyons painting her son's toenails pink because it is his favorite color has wingnuts on full alert, according to FOX News:

“This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity,” psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow wrote in a FoxNews.com Health column about the ad.

Media Research Center’s Erin Brown agreed, calling the ad “blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children.” “Not only is Beckett likely to change his favorite color as early as tomorrow, Jenna's indulgence (or encouragement) could make life hard for the boy in the future,” Brown wrote in an opinion piece Friday.

"J.CREW, known for its tasteful and modest clothing, apparently does not mind exploiting Beckett behind the facade of liberal, transgendered identity politics.”

J Crew declined to comment

This is what they mean to say..

The boy's clearly gay, can't you tell? He probably plays with dolls, paints his toenails pink, and is close with his mom.

YEAH FUCKIN' RIGHT.

I say fucka Fox News. I see nothing wrong with a boy liking pink. Whoever drew a line that supposedely dictates how men are supposed to act can go shoot themselves. A guy can like pink, or hold dolls, or be kind and gentle. How does that dictate their sexuality?

Your actions dictate what you are. YOU decide who you are. The only thing that differentiate between a man and woman are their anatomical differences.

I rarely hear of women who are cruel and calculating, driven women being called out as lesbians. Why do that for males who have inherently female traits? Nothing wrong with it. I personally find it attractive.

I performed this study once at a Uni here in Thailand just out of pure curiosity.

In America, my psychology & sociology teacher once asked all the boys and

girls to write down their favorite color on a piece of paper and hand it in.

95% percent of the boys chose blue.

The girls were more split among several colors, blue not being one of them.

My sociology teacher said that this was always the case, but never ellobarated

why.

Many years later....

Here in Bangkok, I conducted the same type of test my sociology teacher did.

Last year, during my class's introductory lesson, I simply added "what's your

favorite color" to the list of things they were required to talk about.

I could find no patter of blue being the boys' favorite color. The boys chose

colors just as varied as the girls. It's obviously social conditioning.

Now, the add goes one step further in that it introduces nail painting, etc. etc.

But being taught that you can chose any color you want as your favorite is

one thing--believing that you can socialy condition a child into switching

gender or sexual orientation is just silly.

America has just as many Toms and Ladyboys as Thailand--the only difference

is that in America they're closeted and in politics.

Hey, to each his/her own. It's not something I would encourage if I had a son, but what Jenna Lyons does with her kid is her business. But when you put your business out there, you know the wackadoos are going to say shit.

I was just thinking about this. I think when we have kids we probably usually act on the assumption they'll be straight, since this is most common. A blue room for a baby boy, pink for a girl, for example (so begins the social conditioning). Would I encourage something like in this ad if I had a son? My first thought would be to say no, but then if you're not encouraging you're surely discouraging, and then what? This kid's favourite colour is pink, so would I try to change him to prefer another colour? Does him liking pink mean he's gay or will grow up to be? One of my nephews is 7 years old and since he was about 4 has, aside from liking Ben 10 cartoons, pretty much always enjoyed more stereotypically girl-oriented TV shows, toys and activities, like Barbie, dolls, and female Thai dance to give just a few examples. Though all in all we're a fairly open-minded lot in this household, up to when he was maybe 4 or 5 we still reacted to the way he behaved and his choices as if to steer him towards being more stereotypically boyish, with the thinking 'he's just a young child, it doesn't mean he's gay, no need to actually push him in that direction'. This thinking was most prevalent in my father-in-law, but he was never cruel. I'd say 'steered' rather than him being chastized and certainly not punished. Now our nephew is 7 and do we know he will grow up to be something other than heterosexual? We don't know. It feels like we've all kind of reached an understanding that all along what's been important is that the kid is happy and can make the choices he wants about what brings him enjoyment and happiness. It never should've been about sexuality. If I had a son I think I would approach things a little differently from the start, more like the way we are now with our nephew. Just whatever makes a child happy, and for all the more adult stuff, well that can wait until (if and when) it's an actual issue for the child, and not just an issue for us set in our ways adults with all our preconceived notions, fears, expectations and penchant for getting ahead of ourselves!

Big whoop, she slapped some pink on her kid. People need to stop trippin', particularly when less than a 100 years or so ago all our daddies, uncles, and grandaddies were running around sporting pink as kids.

I wish my mother was free spirited like that.

my son used to paint his toenails when he was little, but never pink though!

it was no big deal, kids love to express themselves with art, tattoos & facepaint etc.

at some point he stopped doing it. he's now a rampant heterosexual btw
