If you call the police anonymously

is it REALLY anonymous???

What if you knew THOUGHT you knew something and called with an anonymous tip, would they REALLY not know who it was??? What if you were scared to call cause you thought something might happen to you or your family if you did? Would you call anyway?

911 locks into the number it was called from. so, if you want to be anonymous you should use a disposable, pre-paid cell.

if i thought there was someone out there rendering harm to others, and should be stopped, i'd try. anonymously, if possible smile neutral

Isn't calling anonymously referring to having the choice to remain anonymous? Not that they wouldn't know who called but that they would keep it in confidence?

I could be wrong, but that's how I've always taken it.

Is Crime Stoppers national? I'm pretty sure that is completely anonymous and that they don't track who or where the calls from.

If you whisper they can't track the call.

If the police department in the city/state you live in has an upgraded phone system, they already see the number you're calling from and address. Before the 9/11 attack, NY did not have their system upgraded, but after that attack, they upgraded their phone system, and now they can see the phone number and address you're calling from.

999 automatically detects your phone number to stop you being an arse but to also pinpoint you if you're in trouble/can't talk.

I don't know about other lines but if the line claims to be anonymous, I doubt very much they make a point of looking for you.

Sadly, in answer to your question probably wouldn't call if somebody 'bad' could work out who you/your family were

anonymous calls lack credibility, unless your town has a crime stoppers hot line.

suppose you were in harms way, and someone knew about it, but didn't do anything to stop it because it wasn't anonymous. and you got hurt because they wouldn't help you...

just sayin.

I think aninymous means without giving your name. That is not the same as not being able to be found out.

But if you know of a crime. and you report it anonymously it is very likely that it will remain so.

Those are the first two things I thought of, lol. Call from a payphone, if you can find one (...and use gloves when you pick up the phone, and hold it away from your ear and mouth, and make sure it's not within view of some surveillance camera attached to the side of some random building, and keep the call under 30 seconds, lol). You should be good, lol.
