Exactly. They're miners. Can't they just dig up?

In other words those companies have procedures and safeguards that work and allowed those men to get you that air-pocket / safety room. Since this isn't the PF, just google to see what the former President did, what rules he rescinded, and who he named to be the head of mine safety agency.

I thought I saw on the news yesterday that they didn't tell the miners how long it would take. I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. I guess hearing 4 months of being in that hole could be discouraging to them while they are down there. I imagine they'll let them know once they get closer. |

Yeah, I'm in two minds about that too. On the one hand you really don't want to destroy morale but on the other hand you could argue that they deserve to know the truth (and maybe that would even help them prepare mentally, and not be disappointed for every week that passes without a rescue happening).
I would probably tell them that we're working as hard as we can every day to get them out and that it could happen sooner rather than later but in a worst case scenario, it might be a matter of months rather than weeks. It's all true but neither optimistic nor brutal. I think it's what I would like to hear myself.

They told it today. I read their reaction was surprisingly neutral, but this could be a result of the antidepressants they are giving them. I saw the shaft and its diameter was very small, just big enough to put bottles in it

I suspect it takes a different type of mindset to do that type of work so, maybe these guys have that type mental strength that's allowed them to remain calm. Or, maybe it's comforting for them to know help is on the way and they can tuff it out since they are know getting supplies. Even so, wow. |

Personally, I would be fine. I don't mind small places, the dark, sleeping on the ground, etc. But if a lot of people got stressed at one time and things got hectic there isn't much you could do about it. That and poop would be my main concern. Hopefully they're removing as much waste as possible.
It's easy to say that while typing on your computer with either a nice confy couch or bed just a few feet away, but I highly doubt you'd be able to maintain that outlook if actually faced with that scenario.
Right. Because you actually know me really well. And you know everything I've done in my life. Your comment is based on your own fears and I don't share them with you. I assure you none of the things I listed would be a problem for me in the slightest. The thing I would be most worried about is other people freaking out in a confined space. That could get really ugly, really fast. Especially with loose rocks around. |

No, I know this because you've never been trapped 1 mile deep in the Earth! So you can talk all day about what you THINK you would do but more than likely you'd be saying "Damn, ROC was right! HELLLLLLP! I'M SCARRRRED!" You can call me "ROC" for short |

Naaah. Trust me, I know me. And that kind of stuff isn't a problem. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that there would be other people all up in my business and food choices would be limited (I do like to cook) I'd probably have a pretty good time. I love camping, been doing it for 28 years. I love caves, been exploring them for nearly as long as I've been camping. I have ZERO fear of claustrophobia and I LOVE the dark. And I mean LOVE it. It makes me feel comfortable and at ease. I am 100% a night person. Don't really get on with the sun too well at all.
It's like somebody else mentioned in this thread, you've probably got to be a certain type of person to do that work to begin with (or at least to be happy about it). I really believe the biggest problem for me would be other mf's goin' stir crazy and causing problems.
Don't get me wrong, though - I'm perfectly at peace with not being FORCED to ever prove any of this. But as far as what I know of myself, I think I would be fine. It will be interesting to see what happens to/with the trapped miners time moves along, though. Definitely a good (if completely unfortunate) study group. |

COPIAPO, Chile – The first video released of the 33 men trapped deep in a Chilean copper mine shows the men stripped to the waist and appearing slim but healthy, arm-in-arm, singing the national anthem and yelling "long live Chile, and long live the miners!"
Read the rest of the article here....
http://news.yahoo.com/s/a...e_collapse
Sounds like they are in good spirits! Unless they are forced by the government at threat of collapse of the mine if they don't sing the anthem
I hope they all make it out alive |

LMAO! @ You comparing this shit to "camping"
Have you ever hiked for twelve days from sea level over the top of a 8000 ft snow covered mountain range and back down again with no tent and only a small backpack containing everything you have to survive? Have you ever cannoed for eight days down the Colorado river? Often sleeping on the large rocks that line the shore because you're stuck in a canyon? Have you ever slept deep in a cave on cold, damp ground for three days and nights without ever seeing sunlight? I've done all of those things. Along with about 1000 other strenuous outdoor activities. I understand that their situation is not "camping", dude. I'm simply stating that my life experiences and knowledge of my own inner self make me quite certain that so long as some kind of nourishment (I actually think Ensure is pretty tasty ) was reaching the us I would be able to live out the time trapped in that cave. And I'm saying AGAIN that it's your own psyche telling you that I wouldn't. It's your fears, not mine.

Ok, let's say you HAVE done all those things........NONE of those things compare to what these miners are going through. I don't know if you know this, but this isn't a camping trip these dudes are on. This is their fucking lives at stake here, not some damn whitewater rafting excursion or a damn hike or sleeping on a fucking rock . You're not actually processing what I'm writing. You're reading it and taking little bits and pieces to try and make your point. That's when I walk away from a conversation. And you're missing my point, you equating your "camping" experience to "trapped 1 mile deep in Earth and not being able to be free until 4 months" is ridiculous. Nothing you've ever done can prepare you for what's in store for these dudes, and it's ridiculous to sit here and try and claim you would be able to do that. You ever camped in a dark room for 4 months, not being able to hike, raft, fish or leave? HELL NO! You can call me "ROC" for short |

Wow. Good questions. First off, being so laid back, I would close my eyes for awhile trying to take everything in, the space, the situations, and how many people were with me. Then after about 20 mins, I would freak out. That is some scary crap! I hate getting stuck in an elevator. I can just imagine that those guys are going through pure heck. “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint.
