I care little for the special editions.
Lucas could take a cue from Richard Donner. His DVD editions of Superman: The Movie and Superman II (Director's Cut) were a real treat. They each incorporated substantial minutes of deleted scenes without destroying the continuity or concept of the original film. In fact, they added more context to each film.
As for the prequels, well, Lucas got in the way of his own films. But that I think was due to extreme rustiness. The beauty of the original films lay in the fact that they never took the audience's intelligence for granted. They were never written for kids. They were written for the imagination. Ep I was for kids, Ep II was for the Titanic crowd, and it showed. Ep III is closer to the spirit of the original and is probably better than ROTJ (thanks to Ian McDiarmid and Frank Oz). But by that time the perception had set in that the prequels were trash. So the real reason folk might be so angry is that they perceive the movies as Lucas' selling them short after decades of devotion.
But there were common traits the prequels shared: 1) each had moments (fleeting, or extended) that reminded the moviegoer of the magic of the prequels, 2) each subtly fleshed out aspects of the "SW Mythology" which many fans overlooked while railing against the flaws, and 3) stilted writing and direction left each film fighting with one hand tied behind its back.
The Clone Wars minisodes and current series goes to show that faith in Lucas' universe is so strong that others who believe in the story can be great stewards. If he had chosen great stewards for his movies like he's done with the 'toons, he may have earned an Oscar for his trouble. Had he trusted talented writers and directors who cherished his work to carry it on, like he has in so many other areas, the SW fanbase would petition Rome to canonize him.
But for me, there's something to love in each Episode. God bless the man.

It won't surprise me in anyway whatsoever if the BluRay releases will be very disappointing regarding the extra features, so Lucasfilm can churn out a Special Collectors Edition later next year, then another Special Version six months later then another Remastered release six months after that!! They're good at ripping off the true fanbase as they know that they'll buy any old tat with a Star Wars logo on it!!

I don't like that Lucas just tacks on unused scenes as extras, really he should do extended editions like LOTR. The birth of the rebellion that took place in ROTS would I think give that movie much more depth. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

I hate that argument. A true fan (completist) will surely buy it over and over without feeling they are getting ripped off.
Nobody is forcing anybody else to buy anything.
Me? i can't wait. I LOVE Star Wars, all of Star Wars.

I am a true fan (of the originals) but the prequels except maybe III, left me cold. But the original theatrical releases of the originals without all that cosmetic enhancing will do me fine. They're the ones that I loved and the only ones that I care about.
