Ah, the smell of dead bodies!

Isn't that gross? Heck yeah!

But the Museum of Natural History here in Houston has a Corpse Flower. A Corpse Flower is a big flower that, when it blooms, releases a smell similar to that of rotting corpses.

This smell attracts flies and insects, who pollinate the Corpse Flower.

The Corpse Flower is starting to bloom today. People are jamming into the museum so they can smell it. People are weird.

But one couple is unfortunate. A year ago, they booked the museum for a wedding, which will be held this Saturday.

When the Corpse Flower is in full bloom.

A haunted house I went to last Halloween dabbled in smells for the first time. They had a room that "smelled like death" and it really did. Rotting flesh and flies buzzing and everything.

BLEH.

It was the coolest (and scariest) haunted house ever. It's run by an artists' collective and held in the dank basement of a gallery. You go in in groups of 4 and at one point they purposely separate you from your friends - so you're all alone, in the dark, no idea where you are or where you're going. At another point I was blindfolded, strapped to a wheelchair and pushed who knows where by a maniacal scary clown doctor thing.

But yeah - the smell of death. They had it.

They've had a couple of corpse flowers at the University of Wisconsin in the last few years. They always get huuuuuuuuge lines to see/smell them.

I've never gone. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Thanks, but now this is reply #19 so we have to lock this thing down NOW.

Because if it gets to 20 posts, it can no longer be considered the perfect thread.

I'm self-locking this thread now.

I think that the first "corpse flower" to bloom in the USA was at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx in the 1930's (or something like that). I think that as a result, the corpse flower was the official flower of the Bronx until 2000.

I feel bad for that wedding party...but just think how "cool" it would be to give out gas masks to all of the guests! That's a story to be handed down to your great-great-grandkids!
