Question: I've got a 3GS iPhone, simlock-free, bought in Hong Kong. Can I do just a regular update through iTunes without having to fear that it will lock my phone???

I know that I should know, the fear of having a locked phone again just pisses my pants!

Anyone?

I updated mine last night. So far I love the changes. The spellchecker is much better than before. The multi-tasking thing is great. I like the wallpaper changes. It's nice being able to tidy up all your apps with folders etc. Love it thumbs up!

Looks like if you have a 3G - as opposed to a 3GS, you might want to pass on the upgrade, which is what I'm going to do until I get info that says 3G phones work OK with iOS4:

The first thing you should do before attempting to upgrade your device is to decide if you even want to do it. This is a particularly sticky issue for owners of the iPhone 3G, as there are numerous reports (which our own anecdotal evidence supports) of the now two-year-old 3G model suffering from serious performance and battery life issues when running iOS 4.

If you download the new software and you buy something from itunes, your ipod doesn't work anymore. It opens for 3 seconds and closes down again.

don't know the solution yet.... confused

Wait, maybe I did update. hmmm

Do you mean the app opens for three secs saying it's updating then shuts down?? (not the whole phone).

Cuz I bought that Words With Friends game and for about a week I couldn't it did that, I reported there was a bug, but then eventually reset.

no, ipod isn't updating....it just shuts down after you installed the iphone4 software and you bought someting from the store.

Here a possible solution:

Plug iPhone into computer. Wait for it to appear in iTunes and sync. With it still plugged into the computer, unlock the phone and open the iPod app. It should say something about building or rebuilding the library. Allow that to finish ("This may take a few minutes" may vary based on the size of your library). Should work at that point.

offcourse re-sync!!

I updated mine today. Took a while. At first I was mad cuz all my bought apps were gone, but then plugged it in again and checked everything manually through itunes and it uploaded them to the phone. whew

Now...someone tell me what this multitasking stuff is about and how to do it. lol

What else is supposed to be new with this version?

You probably won't notice it unless yo have a listen to App and a watch/play app but here's how to switch between.

Open an app

Press the home button

Open another app

Double press the home button...it'll show you all the running apps that you can switch between.

Hold down on an app to make it shake to be able to close it

Or swipe lefy to access iPod controls

It took me awhile to figure out as did folders.

As for what else is new, it depends on if you have 3G or 3sg as not everything works on older model:

5x camera zoom

Photos are automatically grouped by location taken and can also be group by dace recognition (haven't worked the face out yet tho)

Change background for icons instead of boring black

Apps into folders

Handles more email accounts

You can ask it what the time is (look at the screen or watch you lazy git!!!)

Different standard wallpapers (although some old ones have gone)

YouTube and iPod in profile mode

Chances are they are waiting for Apple to approve the new version. Hopefully it shouldn't take too long.

Is there a way I'm not aware of? With all the bells and whistles of the iphone, making ringtones was my favorite thing. boxed

I was able to make new ones. A few months ago the latest (before this last update) version of itunes wouldn't let me make the AAC copies. I read somewhere that they had blocked them. But it worked with this version. whew

Nope. First-gen phone, can't be updated..

I'm considering ditching it and just using an iPad + Google Voice. I hate talking on the phone anyway. Might as well save the $.
