it's about sooooo many things... self-discovery, identity, reality, faking it, death, what defines race, love, sex, weed, and kick ass fucking music. the heavy set guy is the book and music writer as well as the narrator in the show. it is also a semi-fictionalized account of his life. he, in his youth, is played by an actor onstage, as is his mother. they are priviledged suburbanite south central residents. he goes to europe (berlin and amsterdam) to discover himself, as an artist, as a young black man, and as a person. wiki's synopsis: A young black musician travels on a picaresque journey to rebel against his mother and his upbringing in a church-going, middle-class, late 1970s South Central Los Angeles neighborhood in order to find "the real". He finds new experiences in promiscuous Amsterdam, with its easy access to drugs and sex, and in artistic, chaotic, political Berlin, where he struggles with ethics and integrity when he misrepresents his background as poor to get ahead. Along with his "passing" from place to place and from lover to lover, the young musician moves through a number of musical styles from a background of gospel to punk, and then blues, jazz, and rock.
i am a HUGE theatre snob, and this is seriously the best musical i have ever seen. i saw it 5 times in the 5 months it was open. [Edited 2/2/10 22:54pm] Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

Geez, Chris, is this the WHOLE production?
Either way, I'm gonna rent this thing. I wanna give Spike some $$$. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I've heard a lot about this show. Rosie O'Donnell talked about it a lot and recommended it to everyone. I remember seeing it on the Tony's this past year. Then I finally watched it on PBS just a few weeks ago.
I hated it. Honestly....I just could not get into it. I WANTED to. I really wanted to. But I just didn't care much for it. Out of a 10, I'd give it like a 4.5 or 5.

I DVR'd this when it came on PBS and I have yet to watch it cuz I've been traveling lately, but I will eventually. Really looking forward to it.
I hate I missed this on Broadway tho, I woulda loved to see this in person. Looks like Broadway has some good shows right now so I've planned a theatre trip to NYC in April. I got tickets to Race (David Mamet's play starring James Spader, Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, and Richard Thomas), Memphis, and Fela (directed/choreographed by Bill T. Jones). I'ma try to fit The Heights in there somewhere. I'm REALLY excited about these shows. [Edited 2/3/10 7:11am]

I saw a video with Spike, Sting, and Lily Tomlin raving about it on opening night.

I'm going to see Fela before it leaves Broadway, and also RACE as soon as I get tickets. One of the physicians in the office where I work saw "FELA" and loved it, so I'm anxious to see it as well. I love Fela Kuti's music and loved what he stood for. [Edited 2/3/10 7:28am]
