Girl gets random friend requests on Facebook because of an Internet joke

This is my favorite weird news item this weekend...
So basically the thing is that there's an ad campaign in Iceland from the phone company Vodafone featuring a cute little talking frog who speaks the same way some people talk to infants or their pets... The tag-line varies, but is for example "Who's switching to Vodafone Gold? Is it you?".. it always ends with "Is it you?"... In Icelandic that sentence would be "Er það þú?" but the frog says it like this: "Essasú?"
One of the ads:

The ad campaign has been very popular and "Essasú" is now a popular catchphrase in Iceland, which is fortune (or unfortunate, depending on how you look at it) for Malaysian Facebook user Essasa Sue, who has had over 300 friend requests from random Icelanders the past 24 hours... And the thing is that she seems to have accepted all the friend requests!
This has now reached the news sites in Iceland.... These are pictures from her Facebook page posted on the local news website:

And here's the link to the news item (in Icelandic, you could try Google translate but it gives quite limited results):

And I should add that the joke has been explained to her and she seems to be OK with it, although she has added that her name is not Essasú, but Essasa Sue.

I don't know what to say about this but it clearly shows the power of advertising and Facebook. lol

I just had to resurrect this thread because I noticed that the UK newspaper Daily Telegraph did a story about this and they even linked to this thread! biggrin
To be exact they said that this girl had become an internet sensation, and the word "internet sensation" links to the thread on the Org. cool
