Does anyone own a greyhound?

As some of you may know...I lost my sweet Doberman Hannah a little over a year ago.

After giving it lots of thought. I've decided to rescue another dog.

A retired greyhound biggrin

I was wondering if any of you can give me a little advice on owning one.

Greyhounds are awesome dogs, but can be very timid. Reason being, Greyhounds usually know nothing of life outside of a racetrack. So that means they often have to learn even simple things like going up and down stairs. If threatened, the often freeze or cower. Simply because they've never experienced these things before. These are things that change as they come out of their shell and learn to live life as your companion, of course. Anyone I've known with Greyhounds have loved them and their demeanor. You just have to teach them and make them feel secure at first.

Also make sure always on leash, as Greyhounds are trained to run after a lure! A squirrel or something comes across their path and there they go!

I did a lot of research because we were gonna adopt Greyhounds. The only reason we didn't was because Lola (our basset) is Queen Bitch here and we didn't want her terrorizing them. sad We really needed a dog that could stand his own and put up with her bossy bullshit. lol

I had the names picked out and all. Given their background we were naming them Isis and Cairo.

If this is gonna be your only dog, or if your other pets are not too bossy, I'm sure a Greyhound will be a great companion. mushy

An online artist friend of mine has Greyhounds if you want any more info I could put you in touch. wink

My friend had one until she died at age 14. Sweetest dog ever and totally a big baby that was super lazy. She wasn't timid at all, just calm and reserved.

Oh yeah, and coats! They're one of those few dogs that actually need a coat when they go in the cold. nod

I didn't mean to imply they're socially timid. They are definitely friendly fun dogs. I meant if another dog acts aggressively toward them, when first adopted, they can be. Ever since Ron and I moved into our first home we've had a houseful of crazy dogs (at most 4, never less than 2), so it's something we always have to look into and test out when rescuing a new guy/gal.

I probably should've been clearer about that.

And ThreadCula, I'm thinking of maybe rescuing a Doberman for my parents (who have an elderly German Short Haired Pointer). This poor little fella.

There is also this little girl needing a home.

Any advice? We've never had one, but we've had a couple of Weimaraners and a GSP - both crazy ass breeds. lol

roodboi

a former supervisor of mine has had several greyhound rescues over the years and all of them were really great dogs...very loving and seemingly appreciative of a good home. As stated before, they all seemed to have a lazy streak in them and all of his have proven themselves to be wanna-be lap dogs...

Awwwww! SO CUTE! Dobermans are great dogs! Taking care of her was pretty easy for me. They are very protective. They like to sit very close to you. And she liked my clothing. When I cam home I would always find one of my shirts or my underwear on her bed.
They do a quick walk through at night to make sure everything is ok.
My moods and actions affected her mood. If I was sad,so was she. She hated when my ex and I argued. She would cry and howl.
Walks are a must.
She loved Nyla bones

My friendowbs several rescued greyhounds and the only advice she has is that they need alot of exercise (not a ridiculous amount though).

They really are treated like shit during thier racing life and, when they don't win a few, it's often a one way trip to the vets.

Thats sad. Thats why I want to rescue one. Give one a loving home. She can lounge all she wants lol

There's an indoor pet gymnasium near me. I'd take it there and let it run around.
