This CANNOT be good: Disney to buy Marvel in $4bn deal!

Entertainment giant Walt Disney is to buy Marvel Entertainment in a shares and cash deal valued at $4bn (£2.5bn).

The deal means Disney will take over ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters, such as Spider-Man and the X-Men.

Marvel shareholders will get $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share owned...

I see Deadpool being now known, at worst, as Sadpool. disbelief

I doubt Disney will stick their fingers in the mix to that extent. The whole point of the deal was to attract a young male audience that is turned off by Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers, right? How are they gonna do that by censoring the characters that men like best? What I don't like is the thought of Marvel and Disney characters interacting in cross-promotional vehicles.

Ultimately though I think it puts Marvel on equal footing with rival DC comics which is owned by Time Warner.

And now my Marvel stock is going up! biggrin

Disney is really trying to get Time Warner lol

If they try to acquire any anime companies, I'm gonna be leading a riot lol

Good points, I guess. I do hope you're correct.

my parents bought me a bunch of Marvel stock when it was first offered. It split, like, 3 times and I cashed it in. I should have saved it!

Reading the reaction on many online boards, most Marvel fans are against this sale.

However, I see it as the best possible news for an upcoming Avengers movie being made. shrug

eek Y'all I choked on my starburst candy when I read that headline. I thought I was imagining it. I've been a Marvel girl for a while and I am NOT happy. Especially knowing the fact that Disney has it's paws on X-Men Franchise. Damn it Disney, stay in your own yard. Quit buyin' crap just 'cause you can! mad

I wonder if this will lead to some Marvel TV shows on ABC.

Other than that, I doubt Disney will muddle too much. Or at least I hope so. Disney wants to add some boy-centric merchandise to their princess-heavy lineup, so they'll probably let Marvel do what it's already doing and sit back and count the cash.

Until some writer at Marvel tries to have another character come out of the closet.

But those stories are always debacles and controversies anyway.

The only possible problem I see with Marvel Comics is maybe no more Howard The Duck since Disney at one point threatened to sue Marvel over the character unless his look was changed to less resemble Disney's Donald. lol

Isn't Avengers already set? I think all the Marvel movie contracts that have already been done will remain the same. PW reports that the next five Marvel movies will come out through Paramount; and Sony can apparently do Spider-Man movies forever.

Ah yes, you're right about that. The Disney deal will only affect films not already under contract with other studios.
