Have a ciggie and stop worrying!!! Exactly. I've seen too many relatives (nonsmokers) that lived to be very old and their latter years were absolutely horrible. Live it up and have fun while you can because you only live once so don't waste those younger years worrying if you're going to live long enough to become miserable. Andy is a four letter word.

Is a drug addict not guilty for putting toxins in his body either? 'Guilty?' Of what exactly? Sinning? I would not be so presumptuous as to judge. By the way, every breath you take is contributing to your own death . . . but my guess is you aren't going to stop. "Guilty" as in sorry for one's own mistake. I don't believe "sin" exsists. I guess you could say yes considering it's unrefuted link to lung and other types of cancer.
But by that logic, so is eating a high fat diet. Hell, so is eating a diet according to the current food pyramid if you REALLY think about it. But unlike smoking, you can eat things in moderation. I do personally find that in my old age ![]() ![]()

The only time I came close to really enjoying it was when I didn't smoke very much, and after work I would light up in the car. That felt good because I was done with work. My Legacy

In my experience I tend to want to write or make music more than ever as new ideas pop up that I didnt think about because my mind runs 200 mph through thougts and scenarios. And yes, drinking does make people feel more confident and "with" the crowd. However both are bad to yur body if you are not drinking juices, eating whole foods and treating your body right. However when you begin smoking...what do people do it FOR? What is the reason to do it? It only calms people down because of the addiction and the craving from what I see. Like I said this question came up when we were at a party just with random thoughts in the air. Im loving all the answers Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I would say it is definitely self-destructive, but not suicide. Suicide is a conscious effort to die, where self destructive behavior is more about denial. We enjoy the burger, we are too lazy to exercise, we enjoy the drugs.
We know they are bad for us, but we sort of push that out of our minds. It's actually about enjoying life & not wanting to face the fact that these habits shorten it. That is very different than suicide. My Legacy

But I just don't understand the enjoyment in the smoking after all yeah I believe that smokers don't actually enjoy smoking, as that was my experience. We don't want to admit that the feeling--in fact the feeling of most drugs--is actually unpleasant. But if they admit it is not pleasant then how could we justify doing it? But millions of smokers would probably argue with me. [Edited 8/20/09 11:24am] My Legacy

I don't think it's a form of suicide. The same argument could be made for eating fatty foods, clogging your arteries and putting on weight, etc.
However, I think it's an addiction that people are weak to, to the point that they'd rather keep up the habit than ever try to get out of it (as evidenced by people who have smoked for more of their life than not.) It is self-destructive, and reeks of lower self-esteem I think. People will spend hours in the gym, and avoiding fatty foods, eating like a bird, yet smoke because it helps curb the appetite or whatever it does. I've never smoked. Well, I smoked ONE cigarette in the Navy at a bar, and was higher than a kite. (It was a Marlboro.) I was 19, and haven't touched them since. I never even had the desire to do it, I just did it because it was there.

GirlBrother said: heartbeatocean said: all the regular smokers I know hold this attitude and worldview, coincidence? No. Not at all. I do think that certain people are genetically predisposed to become addicted to nicotine, moreso than others... And this predisposition is also linked to other traits such as a less-optimistic realist outlook on life. Most of my friends are smokers. I'm more inclined to befriend smokers than non-smokers. There's usually a similar gallows humour in common; a degree of spontaneity; a "f**k it" attitude, which non-smokers don't possess. I don't believe these personality traits are characterised purely by an addiction to nicotine. Quiet kids whom wear black all the time and listen to The Smiths in their bedroom usually don't develop into shiny happy people in adulthood. I was just being ridiculous earlier, by the way. Nobody should smoke near children. But comparing smoking to suicide is an extreme comparison, in the same way as "birth = death". When I think of smokers, I always thing of James Dean ![]() I know the physical tendency toward addiction is a factor. That is very different than suicide. I can buy that. It's more of a short term effect of caving into sensual pleasure, rather than aspiring to a higher order. I think being suicidal involves an entirely different mindset.

I smoked with the full knowledge...and HOPE...that it would shorten my life.
Seriously, if I was stressed and angry enough to be putting toxins in my own body regularly, I probably was not enjoying life all that much anyway. But without trying to commit active suicide. Why do people do most of the self destructive behaviors that they do? Why do people drink and drive? Why do people sky dive and mountain climb and bungee jump? Trying to make life seem not quite so bland....
