It's the risk you take, I suppose. Does their second hand smoke make them murderers or would you call them suicide bombers?

And what about people that use tanning beds? Are they slowly commiting suicide as well? I would argue this one more than the smoking thing. Smoking is an addiction. One may choose to stop but sometimes their addiction chooses for them. It's one of the hardest things to quit and even though I would no longer pay that much money to look like an asshole, I can somewhat understand why people continue to. With that being said, I hope everyone that wants to stop smoking has the power to do so. You're fricking killing yourself, man!

Not exactly, because of all those things, only cigarettes will kill you when used exactly to the manufacturer's specifications.

Smoking is a drug. I find people have a hard time quitting the nicotine.

If you smoke you take your chances. You made the choice to take up the filthy habit. If you get cancer you cannot blame it on the tabacco companies. Do people like their clothes and hair reeking of cigarette smoke odour, yellowing teeth?

Yeah, I'm the son of two former smokers, whose parents also smoked.

I can't see starting smoking now. I just can't. There's too much publicity about its long-term effects. I can see trying really hard to quit.

It may not appear like suicide when you're 30, but when you're 65 and have already suffered one stroke and have high blood pressure, or have had triple bypass surgery and need bloodthinners to stay alive or you are on an oxygen machine with emphysema AND you still smoke (as my father and great aunt and great uncle do respectively) -- I say that's suicide. When you get older and debilitated, it's just more obvious that you're more dedicated to the addiction than your life. Sorry, but I feel strongly about it.

If smoking is suicide, then procreation is pre-meditated murder.

Whenever a child is born into the world, the only certainty is that one day it will die. Life is a death sentence.

So, whenever somebody tells you not to smoke around their children, point out to them that they've already condemned them to die by creating them in the first place.

Everybody should smoke. We're all going to Hell in a handbasket anyway.

But it has. My uncle died from it...does that mean it kills you ...or not?

IT does not kill everyone who smokes. Everyone who gets hit by a car doesn't get killed either . . .

No, that means that it killed your uncle. Smoking increases the likelihood of dying from certain diseases. The tobacco industry has always pointed to people who smoked for decades without problems as proof that their product was not harmful. Obviously that is not true, but it is true the smoking doesn't kill everyone who does it. My Great-Grandfather smoked for 80 years and lived to be 103 years old. His wife smoked just as long and she lived to be 102. Some people just don't get affected by cigarette smoke.

So be it told that the production of putting poisons into your system knowing it can harm one self, and when one is medicated and knowingly told that they are affecting their health by contributing to obliterate their health they are not attributing to their death? Is a drug addict not guilty for putting toxins in his body either?

'Guilty?' Of what exactly? Sinning? I would not be so presumptuous as to judge.

By the way, every breath you take is contributing to your own death . . . but my guess is you aren't going to stop.

It's a matter of perspective, yes. (a choice of perspective) One can say, "it doesn't matter, doesn't kill everyone, we're all going to die anyway" and pin life to the level of the mundane with a don't care attitude. Or you can embrace the sacredness of life and treat your body as a temple. Love yourself or let yourself... Love others or let others... I can't say that surviving a childhood wrapped up in smoke-filled vehicles and small rooms, against my will, did much for my self esteem.

No. Not at all.

I do think that certain people are genetically predisposed to become addicted to nicotine, moreso than others... And this predisposition is also linked to other traits such as a less-optimistic realist outlook on life.

Most of my friends are smokers. I'm more inclined to befriend smokers than non-smokers. There's usually a similar gallows humour in common; a degree of spontaneity; a "f**k it" attitude, which non-smokers don't possess.

I don't believe these personality traits are characterised purely by an addiction to nicotine. Quiet kids whom wear black all the time and listen to The Smiths in their bedroom usually don't develop into shiny happy people in adulthood.

I was just being ridiculous earlier, by the way. Nobody should smoke near children. But comparing smoking to suicide is an extreme comparison, in the same way as "birth = death".

Knowingly, particularly self destructive? Absolutely.

But suicide implies an intent to kill oneself, I think. I don't think this could be applied to the overwhelming majority of smokers.
