dumb things people do in your city

is there anything retarded that you just know has to be exclusive to your city?
here in baltimore, on sundays, every third block or so has a newspaper vendor that stands at the traffic light and sells newspapers. people will slam on brakes at a green light to buy a newspaper, oblivious to how many cars are behind them traveling 40-50 mph. disbelief

Get to the top or bottom of a staircase or escalator and then just stop like there couldn't possibly be anybody behind them.

But that's every city.

one thing i've noticed about people in MPLS is that a lot of folks have a hard time with the concept of revolving doors.

on not one but TWO occasions, i've gone to the downtown target and noticed someone EXPLAINING to someone else how the revolving door works.

again: I'VE SEEN THIS HAPPEN TWICE.

i'm thinking there's some kind of jodie foster NELL bullshit going on in the suburbs of this city or something, because that's just not right. eek

That was gonna be my answer for NYC! I don't get it. The Guggenheim has a small revolving door and tourists look at it like they're waiting to jump in a double-dutch game. I'm like, just go already, you're holding up the entire line. And twice I've had someone push into the same tiny revolving door section with me at the Gugg. I give them the dirtiest look when we get outside.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I was going to say nothing ever happens in my area, but this morning our local shops, I was at that exact spot yesterday getting my vegies and meat omg

Car chase ends in deadly fireball

A police chase in Melbourne's south-east overnight ended in a fiery crash which killed the driver of the car being pursued.

The car smashed into six shops on Centre Road shortly before 2:00am and burst into flames.

Police say they spotted the car travelling at high speed in Clayton South minutes before the crash.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade Commander Colin Matheson says fire engulfed the scene, but the driver was dead when fire crews arrived.

"The first crews on scene attended and had a vehicle that had left the road, apparently at high speed," he said.

"He came into contact with a pole and a number of small no-standing signs. The vehicle ignited, the fire spread from the vehicle."

Centre Road will be closed for some time while the police investigate.

"The vehicle and the verandah awnings were well alight when the crews got here," he said.

"They had to work very quickly to stop the fire spreading to the other remaining shops."

Police pursuit

Acting Inspector Paul Kirk of Victoria Police said the pursuit was quickly called off.

"Police tried to intercept the vehicle in a pursuit which lasted a minute. Because of the speeds they called it off pretty quickly," he said.

"The police policy for pursuits is once we deemed them unsafe to the public or police members that we cancel them. We abandon the pursuit. And this is what was done in this case."

Acting Inspector Kirk said it is believed the car was travelling at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

1. Double parking, blocking a lane of traffic, even sometimes when there is a parking spot just feet away. Baffling, because in some places you get a parking ticket right away, but apparently only if you are NOT in the middle of the street blocking traffic

2. Walking into the street without looking for traffic.

There's a guy who used to jog near my house, and even though there were sidewalks, he would jog on the double yellow line in the middle of the street. lol

I think he's dead now

They buy/sell milk in little plastic bags (packaged inside a larger plastic bag), for which you must buy a dedicated pitcher and clip the corners with a pair of scissors. confuse

Just seems life was simpler -- and more eco-friendly -- with a recyclable paper carton. shrug

And, the paper's not worth that anymore... disbelief

This, however, was my favorite thing about Baltimore: How people will hitch rides with other non-cabbies and signal that they want a ride by standing on the roadside, arm extended, and motion with their hand, as if they were tapping on a telegraph...

It tugs at my heart, whenever I'm back in town. touched

even the cat's going "WTF?!?" lol

we had those things when i was a kid, back in the old-timey days. my best friend in grade school had milk delivered to his house, and instead of jugs or cartons, they delivered milk in those big plastic bags. and at our school at lunch, we drank milk out of single serve versions of those bags, and we had special pointed straws that were used to puncture the milk bags. could you imagine the mere IDEA of giving kids sharp pointed puncture straws in this day and age? lol

We'd need armed guards in the cafeterias. shake

I'm told the bags somehow keep the milk fresher. shrug Maybe... but I'm not sure I see a huge difference.
