Synecdoche, New York: Wonderfully Depressing

Has anybody else seen this movie?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383028/

I've never left a film feeling so completely devastated before. It was beautiful, and felt like a soul-scrubbing. With, like, steel wool and gin.

Go see it, and then come back here and I'll give you a hug.

I might go today!

Depends on if I get all my housework done.

Though it may not be the best time for me to see something desribed as so utterly depressing. lol

I wouldn't suggest going alone. You're gonna need a hug.

It's a great movie! It's totally amazing! I plan to see it again!

But it's not "fun".

I didn't make it. Perhaps this week some time... I'm not sure I can convince any of my friends to go see the year's most depressing movie. I'll just come home to my kitty and cry. sad

One of my favorite actresses Samantha Morton is in it so I have to see. It's coming to the theater a few blocks away from my apartment soon so I'll see it when it gets there.

I saw it last night. But I was so focused on following the plot and trying to make sense of it all that the sadness didn't have as much as an effect on me that it should have. I'm still trying to figure out the symbolism at the beginning of the film like Hazel's constantly burning house. confuse The big play and all the double stand-ins I found easier to understand. That was funny. lol

And Samantha Morton was hot. It was worth seeing the movie to me for her alone. love

i need to find people nearby who like watching depressing arty movies as much as i do. my bf's idea of an acceptably bleak movie is "for the love of benji". sigh

I'd go with you sad same problem here, except it's not Benji but cast of 1000s style films, which exhaust me dead

Could Hazel's burning house be symbolic of her relationship with Caden? They got along like "a house on fire?"

Is that a popular expression? I guess it could represent their relationship because Hazel did buy it after Caden started talking to her, right? And she mentioned her concerns about being suffocated to the realtor. hmmm But then there was the realtor's weirdo son living in the basement. Was that the guy Hazel married? I don't remember.

Yes, "getting along like a house on fire" is an expression. Just an guess on my part. Hazel did marry the guy in the basement. He barely had any lines.

One part that stuck out for me was the young daughter. The family is in the car and Caden is trying to explain plumbing to the girl and he says a house's plumbing is like blood in a person's veins. Then the girl gets all panicky and starts repeating "I don't like the blood". Later on in the film Caden goes into a bedroom and there's blood all over the bed. He says "I thought that would have been cleaned up by now." WTF?

The blood in the bedroom was when Caden's mother was killed during the home invasion, no? If there's a connection between that and his daughter not liking his plumbing explanation then that's a real stretch.

It's definitely a movie that benefits from multiple viewings.

I saw it for the second time on Saturday afternoon and more things fell into place for me and it was not as depressing as the first time because I knew what was coming. The whole scene between Caden and a grown-up Olive in the hospital is still puzzling though.
