Separated-At-Birth Twins Get Married

LONDON (AFP) - Twins who were separated at birth and adopted by different sets of parents later married each other without realising they were brother and sister, a peer has told the House of Lords.

David Alton, an independent, pro-life member of the Lords, said the brother and sister were granted an annulment after a high court judge ruled that the marriage had never validly existed.

The Catholic politician -- who discovered the case after talking to a judge -- used it to highlight perceived deficiencies in the government's proposed Human Embryology and Tissues Bill, which is currently going through parliament.

The bill is designed to make it easier for lesbian and gay couples to have children through assisted reproduction, recognising same-sex partners as legal parents of babies conceived through donated sperm, eggs or embryos.

But it contains no provision to require the identity of the donor to be disclosed, potentially meaning a child could not be told they were conceived by assisted reproduction.

Alton raised the case of the married twins -- who were born after IVF treatment -- during a debate on December 10, details of which only appeared on Friday.

"There are implications for everybody involved, but the needs of the child will always be paramount, and it is right that we should therefore make the process as transparent as possible," Alton told the Lords.

IVF -- which increases the chances of multiple births -- meant such cases could become more common if the law does not require children to be told they were donor conceived and have access to their genetic history, he said.

"The right of children to know the identity of their biological parents is a human right," he added Friday.

"There will be more cases like this if children are not given access to the truth. The needs of the child must always be paramount."

The identities of the twins and details of their relationship and marriage have been kept secret, but it was known they were separated soon after birth and never told they were twins.

They only discovered they were blood relatives after the wedding.

This was shocking to me....

Day Break -Relive the series - Day Break Announced!
Exclusive First Word About This Release, Coming on March 11
Posted by Gord Lacey
1/07/2008

BCI has just slipped us some early information on Day Break, the 2006 ABC series staring Taye Diggs, Victoria Pratt, Mitch Pileggi and Adam Baldwin. The set features all 13 episodes, including 7 that weren't aired during the initial run. and the set will be available on March 11.

Premise....

Did you ever have a day so bad you couldn't wait to get past it? The kind of day nothing goes your way, and everything turns out wrong. What would happen if you couldn't put this day behind you...literally?

Today Detective Brett Hopper will be accused of shooting state attorney Alberto Garza. He will offer his rock solid alibi. He will realize he's been framed. And he will run. Then he will wake up and start the day over again. This time he'll do it differently - and will continue to - until he finds out who's framing him, gets his gang witness to court to testify, and until he saves the lives of his loved ones. Hopper has only one advantage in his favor - he remembers everything he did the "day prior" that didn't work. It's a painful way to learn because he also carries the bruises and battle scars from every mistake-filled day.

Taye Diggs (Private Practice) stars in an action-packed, thrilling re-imagining of the Groundhog Day concept from director Rob Bowman (The X-Files, Reign of Fire) and the writer of After the Sunset. Hopper must find the delicate balance between doing what's important and what's right to get through this killer day and move on to tomorrow.

The series was created by Paul Zbyszewski (After the Sunset), is executive produced by Matthew Gross, Jeffrey Bell (Alias, Angel, The X-Files) and Rob Bowman (The X-Files, Elektra). Zbyszewski also serves as co-executive producer. Day Break is from Touchstone Television.

Considering that they yanked it off of TV after airing only 6 episodes and re-run Old According to Jims in it's place, I'd say it's pretty shoching. That it was even thoguht of is pretty shocking.

OK, I was going to make this next thing a thread of its own, but I just don't feel I'm bringing my "A" game tonight.

I have a hobby of studying serial numbers on paper money. Usually, it's something to do when occupied with mundane yet sedentary tasks (yes, I mean while sitting on the toilet).

The goal is to find the best poker hand out of the 8 numbers on a bill's serial number. I think the best I've come up with is 6 two's. (Of course, only 5 of them would count in a real poker game.)

The Holy Grail, though, has been a bill with 8 different digits that make an 8-number straight. Over the years, I've found bills with 8 different numbers, but they were never sequential. For instance, the serial number might be 09476528. See? It's missing a "3" in the sequence.

Wednesday night, I found it. After thirty years of looking at serial numbers while pooping, I finally found a bill with the digits 09876543 (although not in that order).

My life is now more complete than it ever has been.
