What are the top soul food restaurants in the area where you Live?

We have Silver Moon where mama cooks the best turkey and gravy with yams, smothered chicken and the like.

What about where you live?

When I go to Chicago I like Harolds's chicken!

I thought this was your idea of a romantic meal out at a restaurant.

There is a place called "Sit A Spell" about 10 miles south at Lake of Egypt here in Southern Illinois. They have the best lemon pepper battered fried fish I have ever tasted, and they have home fries and some good sweet cornbread. They have pork chops and all that stuff too, but I like their fried chicken and fish the best.

peace

Do you mean B Smith's? Last time I was there, there wasn't much down home soul food but some strange mix of overpriced pan asian cuisine.

If you want real deal soul food you gotta come Uptown to Harlem and have some Amy Ruths at 116th & Lenox (Malcolm X Blvd)... Sylvia's (126th & Lenox) still has better fried chicken, but Amy Ruths is the joint folks are flocking to.

Other spots are Spoonbread on 110th near Columbus, Londel's on 8th Ave (Frederick Douglass) near 140th, Wells on 7th (Adam Clayton Powell) near 138th, and the Bayou (Louisiana cuisine) on Lenox near 126th.

Soulfood in my travels...

When in LA I got down with Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, and then hung out at that spot, Reign owned by Keshawn Johnson.

In Chi-town, Harolds, and a spot called Honeysuckle on the South Side (dunno if they still there)... used to chill at the Salaam on the South Side til they closed down sad

In DC, Georgia Brown's was the best with a close second: B. Smith's with the original Soul Food menu. The best chili dogs are at Ben's Chili Bowl near 14th & U.

In Boston, gotta have Bob the Chefs on Columbus Ave.

Have anyone here ever had any fried chitlins? Down here in the South you can find a plethora of soul food restaurants, i'm talking bout that kind of soul food restaurants that look like houses...I went to a drive thru soul food restaurant once and the drive thru window was at least 6 feet above my car window, lol. You can literally drop the plate on top of the roof! But anyways, the food was delicious, as always with soul food. On the serious tip, I think that we shouldn't intake all of the grease that normally comes with some soul food, that'll put a brotha in his early grave.

I've never had fried chitlins, but I've had them boiled. I wasn't much of chitlin eater because I never really had a craving for them, but I don't eat 'em anymore at all. Grease intake comes with many types of food, not just Soul Food. Mexican and Italian foods are notoriously oily. Just one reason is because of the cheese used in their food. Most times people don't realize the high level of oil contained in cheese until it's melted.

I guess they were pretty famous for their fried catfish. My mother used to talk about it all the time, but I never ordered it when I was there.

Not to close but not too remote--Aunt Kizzies back Porch in Marina Del Rey. Best down home cooking especially the side dishes.

Louisiana Seafood...best catfish ever. Deep fried at a very very high temp so the greasedoesnt collect as much

The previously mentioned Roscoes Chicken n Waffles...best C n waffles ever.

Big Mamas closed down sad

Chitterlings ill !

There aren't any soul food restaurants in my immediate area either... sad But, whenever I do get to dig into a great meal like that it's usually at "home" with family---at somebody's house...and, on my plate I want: Fried chicken, fried catfish, collard greens, candied yams, green beans w/pearl onions, sweet cornbread...and for dessert: Peach cobbler... horny Yummy! smile

And, green kool-aid, Chronic! smile

(p.s. I know that emoticon says "horny", but there isn't one for "hungry" so...shrug...)

smile Whenever a recipe changes hands it never really does taste the same, does it... smile

I had a aunt-like neighbor who made the best lemon cake that I and quite a few others had ever tasted...in fact, she became very well know in the area for her lemon cake. It had a sort of "wet" moistness to it from perhaps a lemon juice mixture that she created.

She would bake the cakes for family, friends, church socials, parties, etc...Anytime you wanted one all you had to do was ask, but she would not share that recipe for ANYTHING!...LoL...I think she knew no one would get it right anyway...(folks have tried to guess the recipe and failed...!!...lol!)...and, maybe she wanted the memory of her cake left intact.

I miss her and I do miss her lemon cake... smile

I don't understand it...I just don't get the combination of chicken and waffles. It's like grits and cheese to me - how in bloody tarnation does cheese go with grits??? It's a southern thang, I know, I know...I just don't see the two being combined and eaten. So how do people eat chicken and waffles? Is it just the regular way with butter and syrup on the waffles and chicken on the side? Am I totally misconstruing the title? confuse

Grits and cheese???

I'm scurred.

I know that cake.

I make that cake.

I'm well-known for that cake.

EVERYBODY and their great-grandparents asks me to make that cake.

I know that recipe.

EVERYBODY says nobody makes it like me.

But I sure as hell ain't aunt-like! wink

Btw, that wet moistness is a glaze. And I shall not tell what exactly it consists of, or how to make it perfectly.
